"To be as fair as possible, it went relatively well at first until it came time for the finishing touches: I went with this company after getting 6 estimates because they were the only ones who wanted to correct the root cause of my water issue instead of just paving over it like most others. I paid a bit extra for this, which I was glad to do if it corrected the problem for good - $9,000 total for both the concrete and asphalt work. They showed up on time each day and showed up on the days they said they'd be there. Demo and initial grading went pretty smoothly. Although they didn't bring a jackhammer to break up the concrete, so I came out to assist and used my own diamond blade saw, sledge hammer and pry bar to save them some time. The not so good - Concrete: I paid extra for what I was told were "top guys" who were going to do the concrete work. It was a small 10'x7' pad, so a pretty easy job for experienced concrete workers. The problem is, I didn't get a top guy; he was unable to make it, so he sent an amateur in his place. This kid didn't bring the correct tools with him to make a simple straight expansion joint. When I asked for it to be created, he created it crooked and then left the job site. I had to have him called back to attempt to straighten it, as the concrete was already drying. I tried to communicate what I wanted, but he barely spoke English; I'm not sure he was even legal, but that's besides the point. It looks passable and the water drains in the right direction, but certainly not "top guy" quality work -- more like that of an apprentice. I was very disappointed and felt a bit deceived. Asphalt: Now this is where I expected them to shine, as I have a simple 500 sqft rectangle driveway. The water problem seems corrected, as they brought in 2" stones and extra base for the bad area. Prior to laying the asphalt, they spread a bit more base to strengthen the driveway. The not so good: Instead of a nice smooth surface, I have little ridges up and down my driveway created by the edges of the steam roller. When the sun hits the driveway, it looks utterly terrible. This should be easily corrected with a torch and roller. Second, the grading was not done well near the end of the driveway and I have a noticeable high area to which several neighbors have come up to me and made comments to the affect of "I didn't think a new driveway would look so wavy," and "why is there a big mound there?" Now every time I look at my driveway, I curse myself for paying so much money for this job. If I could post photos here, I would. I contacted Randy about this, but he will not give me a time when he can come by to look at it. He did not show or call on the day he stated he would. I have a feeling that since the final check has cleared, no one will be coming by since there is no financial incentive to. I hope I'm wrong. Where I come from, you do the job right so you don't have to come back. And if you do have to come back, you show up when you say you will, guarantee your work and make it right. Therefore, I cannot recommend this company and nor would I hire again. I believe it's situations like these for which Angie's list was created. I was a bit long-winded, but am trying to paint the proper picture for future readers to make an informed decision."

Small jobs welcome

"Otis and Mitch graded our horseshoe driveway plus expanded our vehicle parking. The gravel was delivered in an efficient time for the team to finish the SUPERB job. The guys were truly a QUALITY TEAM. They completed everything (including one additional hauling job) in the amount of time that was promised. The price was GREAT for the high quality job they achieved. The Bay to Bay Pavers Team are capable and willing to do other types of "Side Jobs". Sheryl (12/31/2024)"

"We paid $1,100 for entire job on March 30. He did a good job on removing bushes, refreshing all the mulch, and trimming. This quote included installing plastic edging, which was poorly installed. It is already popping out of the ground. He didn't trim the tall palm or plant the 10 small Pentas & said he'd return. We had to nag him for weeks to finish the job. In the photo, you can see that the plants were placed on top of the soil in the mulch. A hole was not dug for each of the plants. I had to go back, dig a hole, and plant nearly every Penta that he "planted." They were starting to die, and I couldn't figure out why until I pushed the mulch back. Also, we agreed on a monthly fee to maintain the area and haven't seen him since."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Tampa, FL

Most shed foundations benefit from a gravel layer four to six inches deep after proper compaction. The exact depth may vary depending on your specific soil conditions, climate, and shed weight. In areas with poor drainage or for heavier structures, contractors might recommend slightly deeper installations. Building the pad in multiple compacted layers rather than a single thick pour helps achieve optimal stability and load distribution.

Gravel pads cost significantly less than concrete foundations. While gravel materials run about $1.25 to $1.80 per square foot, concrete slabs average $6 per square foot. For a standard shed base, this price difference translates to substantial savings. Beyond the initial cost advantage, gravel pads also offer easier installation, simpler modifications if needed, and don't require specialized concrete finishing skills.

For a standard 10-by-12 shed pad, you'll need enough gravel to cover 120 square feet at the recommended depth. At rates of $1.25 to $1.80 per square foot, expect to spend $150 to $216 on gravel materials alone. Remember to factor in extending the pad beyond the shed's dimensions by one to two feet on each side for better drainage and stability, which increases the actual area needed.

The ideal gravel for shed foundations combines stability with proper drainage capabilities. Crusher run ($0.40 per square foot) makes an excellent base layer because it contains various particle sizes that lock together when compacted. For top layers, angular gravel provides better drainage while maintaining stability. Avoid perfectly round decorative stones as they don't compact effectively and may shift under weight, compromising your shed's stability over time.
