"I wasn't too happy with the results we got when trying to get a bid from Young. After coming out and getting my ideas and measurements they came back saying that they were going to decline the offer saying due to time sensitivity and budget they were not going to be able to submit a bid. When originally speaking with Young he said time shouldn't be an issue if we got started right away and never asked me my budget range before coming out. Personally, I don't think the job we were asking to get done was worth what they were trying to put it in the price range of (50-75k). I guess I'll just have to look in to a smaller company that seems more reasonable...  "

"If you are looking for a responsive, professional and talented carpenter please consider David Hall! He was quick to respond, very professional, did what he said he would do , gave great suggestions. He installed molding up and down my stairs, added an extra stair, made a nice landing, extended hand rails to tim length of the stairs, mud and sanded drywall, added a board around fireplace and coming back tomorrow to stain. Excellent friendly hard working family man Kudos to his expertise I give him high accolades and I aprrvisye great customer service!!!"

"Fantastic! Tom and his crew were very friendly and professional. They did an excellent job painting the house, it's very tall! They had no problem with the height. We will be using them again."

"Roman and his wife did SUCH an amazing job on my staircase! I had a tight timeline preparing my home for a graduation party. He did not shy away from that at all and was there every day until the project was complete. I lucked into finding him on NextDoor. Trustworthy, kind, very detail oriented, and showed a lot of patience with me when I couldn’t finalize the stain color until the last minute. Given that the stairs are a main focal point in my house, the project really updated my home. I have received a lot of compliments. He did an amazing transformation. I highly recommend him for your project!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Topeka, KS

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
