Customers say: Quick response

"A. M. Leech Construction/Composite Deck Experts has my highest possible recommendation. Adrian (the A of A. M. Leech) and crew Brandon, RJ, and Eric were just a pleasure to work with from the initial meeting through the final cleanup. To keep this short, I will just give some highlights: 1. They showed up on time every day and put in a full day of work. You could set your watch by their morning, lunch, and afternoon breaks. 2. The workmanship and attention to detail were outstanding. When there was more than one way to do something they consulted with us and together we made the choice. Based on their experience they offered great suggestions on how to make things look good. 3. It rained hard the first week of the job and the work area/yard was just a swamp. They laid plywood sheets over our grass to protect it as much as possible and spread straw over the bare area where the deck was to go to keep the mud down. 4. Material awaiting use was stored neatly in a manner to preclude as much damage to the lawn as possible. They kept their tool area neat and confined to just the area by the deck. 5. There were issues with the existing sprinkler system and gutter downspouts they had to work around or accommodate and they did so with no problem. 6. During framing there was an area by the steps that did not look quite right. They redid the framing, including pouring new footings until it was perfect. 7. Adrian did not ask for any deposit until the day they started work. Then it was 50% and the remaining 50% was paid upon final inspection. In summary, I would hire A. M. Leech Construction/Composite Deck Experts again in a New York second."

"I am glad I went with Paul, a very quiet person who undersells his ability. Everything went as planned and we now have a great two level TimberTech Advanced PVC deck! Highly recommend Paul and Sokol Construction. Thanks Paul, for a great deck completed on time."

"Micah came out and did an estimate which was very reasonable. Once we were on the schedule, his crew was able to complete the deck project within 2 days and it's gorgeous. The people who did stone work were booked up but they were able to come out within a couple weeks and finish the attached patio. The work is top notch and I love the result. Micah is friendly and professional. He responds to inquiries very quickly and is proactive about notifying client about any issues or potential delays. I would highly recommend working with Micah and Stellar Construction. I would definitely hire them again for other outdoor construction."

"During wind storm a tree fell on out buildings. A garage and 2 sheds. This company was fast in tarping garage roof to keep rain from getting in. Also, Anwar was quick to give estimates on repairing garage roof and sheds. His crews put new roof on garage and sheds as well as replacing broken rafters caused by the tree. They prepped and painted garage and sheds. They look brand new. Anwar interfaced with my insurance company to get additional considerations from the original insurance estimate. I was especially appreciative of his help. You can't go wrong by hiring Dluxe Construction!!!"

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Troutdale, OR

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
