"John L. was THE BEST! In working to swap our over-oven microwave/fan for a hood vent he was tireless in being sure it was done perfectly. The original over-oven microwave install was done poorly, causing a headache in fixing the errors, yet John did not cut any corners. He also checked in about every detail to be sure we were comfortable with what was happening. He listened to our concerns about how poorly the previous fan had been working and made an extra effort to be sure the vent opened very wide for maximum venting. We also asked when booking that the technician wear a mask and John arrived and wore an N95 the whole 4 hours with no fuss. This was our first experience with Mr. Handyman and if all the other technicians are as good as John then we will be using them exclusively from now on. John is like the fix-it dad you wished lived in your same town."

"Brief summary: the quality of the workmanship is good; it can be excellent if IYH dedicates an experienced master tradesman to direct the work. Unless you have a small, well-bounded project for which you know with absolute certainty the scope of the work, you should avoid Time and Materials like the plague. I was offered Time and Materials as a way to get started quickly; it ended up taking longer, costing more, and introducing far more stress than necessary. If you’ve got a large project, you may be better off looking elsewhere for a general contractor regardless. Longer version: We closed on a fixer-upper on August 23rd; we needed to have it renovated before my family (including a three-year old and twin infant babies) could move in and sell our old home. IYH was the only company that could get started right away (using Time & Materials); every other company was booked up two months out. What didn’t become clear until much later was that IYH didn’t actually have the resources available to complete the work in a timely fashion. We finally got everything done as of Dec 4th; this did include the addition of a couple substantial projects; but we also dropped a number of line items as well. The biggest problem is that the project coordination was incoherent, which I believe stemmed from the fact that the project coordinator had no direct knowledge of our property. I almost didn’t do business with them because the first Time & Materials estimate quoted completely different work than what I had asked for; I had sent a clear list of items that I wanted addressed together with the inspection report, but for some reason the project coordinator largely disregarded it and derived her own list from the report. We managed to get that sorted out, but from that point on tradesmen would be scheduled ad hoc without an understanding that A had to happen before B; for instance, on some occasions the painter would show up and wouldn’t be able to do anything because prerequisite work had not yet been completed. When working with Time & Materials, IYH also assigns tradesmen basically as they become available; so we would continually get a new set or at best a rotation of tradesmen who would arrive without knowing what the previous guys had done, and they would either need direct guidance from me (a nice 40 minute commute each way) or else they wouldn’t know what to do and they might just start working on the wrong thing. The project coordinator also had a difficult time keeping track of key milestones; for instance, we needed to have all the painting done before Sept 25th when we had scheduled hardwoods work by another company. I could never receive a clear commit about whether or not those sorts of milestones could be met; and in spite of many conversations on the subject, there would still be whole weeks at a time when no work was scheduled. In some cases, work wouldn’t be scheduled due to the lack of understanding about our home; for instance, nothing would go on upstairs if an abatement was going on in the basement, despite the fact that the abatement downstairs in no way prohibited access to the upstairs. Every single Time & Materials quote that we received, of which there were roughly 10, was underestimated. Decisions would sometimes be made on my behalf, usually incorrectly; for instance, during the abatement, there was some question about whether the vinyl under some cabinetry should be removed. Without consulting me, the project coordinator told the crew that it was okay to stay, so the abatement guys had to come back out, and we had to foot the bill for it, although I’m told it was discounted. On other occasions, IYH would pull people off the job in the middle of some task or project; in one case, they sent the master tradesman to another site at noon one day while he was in the middle of replacing a beam up in the attic; in turn, we ended up with a temporary wall in our kitchen (and a nice tripping hazard for the walking members of the family) until IYH could manage to find the resources to come back and finish the job. In the end, we ended up having to live in the heart of on-and-off construction for a couple months and had to delay reroofing of our home due to various missed milestones. At one point I sent a note expressing my frustration about the scheduling, but there seemed to be no acknowledgement that there was any problem whatsoever; the response I received suggested they thought they were doing us a favor. IYH also really gouges you on the materials cost. Basically they charge you $69/hr for someone to procure the materials, but then they hit you with an additional 25% markup. Obviously, when you’re dealing with big purchases, this really burns. On numerous occasions, I would receive a call the day before, or sometimes even the day of, saying that the tradesmen needed (for instance) all the pre-hung doors now and would I mind if IYH sourced it for me? So, on these occasions, I would have to drop everything I was doing to go and make these purchases just to avoid getting hit with the extra cost – another nice 40 minute commute each way. On the whole, the workmanship is good. Rich Griffiths and Joe Kuester were really excellent, both detail-oriented and very conscientious about their work; everything they touched turned to gold. There were a couple doors that were misinstalled (by other IYH tradesmen) but IYH corrected those and didn’t charge me for it. One tradesman also put a 20A hood on a 15A breaker; I’m still waiting for that item to be addressed. Overall, my experience with IYH was largely neutral. As mentioned above, all the tradesmen who worked on our home are great. We would *adopt* Rich Griffiths and Joe Kuester if we could. If there were a way for me to hire the tradesmen directly without all the project coordination chaos, I would. However, given all the troubles that come with the project coordination piece, I’m probably going to look elsewhere for the remaining work to be done around our property, of which there is a lot. If you do decide to work with IYH, here are my recommendations: 1. Avoid Time & Materials unless your project is small and extremely well-defined. 2. Try to get IYH to commit to dedicating a master tradesman to direct the work. 3. Have that individual come out and visually observe your property before the work starts; if you’ve got a big project, make sure that person is looking for other things that might need to be addressed as part of the work. 4. Try to get a clear committed timeline for the work; IYH should commit in advance to some sort of compensation to you if they miss their timeline. If you can’t get this, I recommend pulling out before you get started and go with a different company. 5. Plan on calling IYH on a daily basis to remind them of your schedule and your needs, and to make sure that they understand when work should and should not be scheduled. You need to be a PITA; no one else is going to look out for your best interests. If you don’t bug them a lot, they’ll forget you exist."
