"Overall Once the project got going, Project Manager Javier Rodriguez and his crew were extremely well coordinated and we were always kept up to date and fully informed of everything happening. Nothing happened that we did not approve in advance. Outstanding craftsmanship and finish. Minor changes we requested during construction were accommodated immediately, with no issues at all. Most impressively, Javier essentially helped us find a quality plumbing contractor and electrical contractor and even helped us to coordinate their work. He effectively served as the General Contractor going above and beyond his duties to ensure success and keep all of the work coordinated and moving forward efficiently. Javier Rodriguez's outstanding project management, knowledge and communication were outstanding. The finished product is also beautiful and exceeds our expectations. The project management and quality of the end product made System Pavers the right choice for us. How it works After you contact System Pavers, you will be contacted by a sales person (same as any such contractor or provider). The sales person’s job is to come out to your project location, meet with you, review your project, discuss alternatives, advise on paver systems and other improvements System Pavers can provide, advise on financing options, and (importantly) then close the deal. The sales person will use the typical tactics to try to close the deal. These include reviewing System Pavers’ contractor’s license status (you should look this up independently on your state’s contractors licensing board website) and superior bonding (System Pavers retained their $1M bonding from a prior large project where this was a contract requirement and they use this as a selling point – note that unless you have a very large value contract, you should never actually need to call on such a large bonding amount, and this is essentially a sales pitch). The salesperson will also share with you System Pavers’ warrantee which is good, but is generally limited to materials and workmanship – please read the warrantee carefully. It is similar to other warrantees in the industry. Note also that the salesperson will indicate that he/she can give you a “same day” discount if you sign the contract at that meeting. The discount is significant, and is designed to ensure you do not consider (or shop for) bids from others. In our case, we already had bids from two other contractors in-hand and so we did not need additional bids from others. System Pavers’ bid was not the cheapest, but was reasonable and the discount was helpful. We were also offered a 3-D design (to visualize the finished product) and the cost of this would be deducted from the final full price should we sign. We did not take advantage of this since we completed our own detailed design. Finally, we were offered 12-month interest free financing which we took advantage of. Our salesperson was Scott Issersohn. After you sign the contract, a pre-meeting is arranged with the Project Manager that will administer construction. At this pre-meeting, we met our Project Manager, Javier Rodriguez who was outstanding. Sales Person Scott Issersohn was helpful, particularly in suggesting that we visit the paver manufacturer's facility in San Martin - so we could see the pavers installed ourselves so we did not need to rely on the catalog photos. This was very helpful since the pavers did indeed look different in the field and we ended up choosing different colors and a different pattern than what we initially chose out of the catalog. Also, we wanted a unique fire pit and Scott tried to help us with the materials System Pavers would provide. He did a good job with specifying the block sizes, but his knowledge of how the pit would be constructed, and burner pan supported, were a little out of date (our plumber and Javier got this figured out and built correctly). Scott took the time to listen to us and understood our issues and concerns, but was certainly focused on getting his sale completed. Scott knew we were discussing the project with multiple paver and renovation companies and kept in contact. He met his scheduled appointment times. Project Management (During Construction) Ours was a complex project. As part of the project, we needed gas, electrical, and water lines installed throughout the work area. The entire backyard was a maze of utility lines serving different purposes, and the utility work needed to be completed prior to, and in conjunction with, paver subbase preparation and compaction. In addition, access to our backyard work area was limited by pedestrian access gates that prohibited large equipment, and all trenching was by pick and shovel. The excavation, backfill, ground leveling, subbase preparation, paver layout and installation had to be precise and correct. The pavers are fantastic. The workmanship was outstanding. The finished project is beautiful and exceeds our expectations. The crew worked through the peak heat wave of this last summer and maintained steady progress throughout. The crew was hard working, always on task, and did a great job. Everyone on the crew was very respectful of our property, neighbors, and our family who was living and working at home the entire time of construction. Problem Resolution During Construction I am a civil engineer and have spent a career in design and heavy public works construction - I have experienced every type of field problem, contractor approach, and construction issue imaginable. I immediately noted that our Project Manager, Javier Rodriguez, was extremely competent, attentive, responsive, and solutions-oriented. He instantly addressed any potential issues and resolved problems on the fly - before they became issues. He was very proactive, knew precisely what issues were likely to arise, and got out in front of them. He kept my wife and I fully informed at all times. I was very impressed with Javier. System Pavers, you have a REAL GEM working with you in Javier Rodriguez. He is the epitome of customer service and satisfaction in a difficult and highly competitive field - do NOT let him go. Project Manager Communication Javier Rodriguez remained in constant contact from the moment he was brought on board. He was extremely attentive, responsive, and proactive in his communications. He took the time to really understand our needs and understood we expected very good communication. Javier could not have done a better job keeping us informed, double-checking every important detail with us, and remaining available weekends, evenings, and anytime we needed to reach out. He was also very proactive in communicating with us, and understood what needed to be communicated and how best to reach us. He was onsite in-person as frequently as needed, and he kept us informed via phone, text, facetime, email, and other forms as needed. We were very truly impressed and extremely grateful for Javier's effective communication. Project Schedule The project was delayed significantly due to the inability to lock down our own plumbing and electrical contractors. Responsibility for such contractors was ours as owners, not System Pavers. System Pavers' salesperson was anxious to get us under contract before we had these other contractors lined up, such that the resulting schedule estimate at the outset was very unrealistic. Clearly, as owners, we wanted to be sure the overall scope was understood and agreed-to before we signed with anyone. As the owners, we made multiple attempts at securing contractors to do this work. It was not until System Pavers' Project Manager Javier Rodriguez came on board that he was able to recommend good contractors that he had worked with in the past - and they were great. Once Javier was able to assist with this, additional time was required to secure permits for the sub-contracted work. This took a few weeks, but was not a problem. Overall, the timeline was significantly longer than was suggested by the System Pavers salesperson, but was appropriate for the scope of the work (and as described above, we were benefitted by Javier's assistance in selecting and managin"

"<p>Unique Concrete is an excellent company.  We were referred to Ignacio one of the owners by our designer.  My husband pushed me to go with a cheaper contractor.  What a mess, the owner never showed up, the work was not done correctly and the footings for the travertine patio were poured with cement from a wheelbarrow. I felt like I needed to be outside overseeing the job constantly.  One evening while traveling I got a call that the contractor had by accident broken our gas line - he said he had capped it off.  But, due to my inability to trust him I called a plumber to go out immediately.  I questioned why he told me this at 7pm?</p> <p> I was not only uncomfortable with the work but not happy with the type of individuals the contractor was sending to our home.  </p> <p>I spoke with the designer and put a stop on the job, the same day - embarrassed I called Ignacio from Unique Concrete Creations - told him how unhappy I was and he came over within an hour. The job was on a hillside with lots of retaining walls. Ignacio recommended that I call calstone who was provider of the allen block wall to come out and see what they thought about the installation, this was the support for me to know it was time to remove the original contractor, the walls were being installed and had been installed incorrectly.  Calstone and Ignacio worked together to set up a plan to repair the work.  Ignacio took control and helped every step of the way, he let me know if we needed more product or if we would need to change something which would add cost each time allowing me to approve all cost increases.  In terms of setting up the travertine patio he took out the poor foundation and brought in a truck to poor foundation all around the patio with deeper footings at the hillside.  Everything was done so expert, all the individuals who work for Unique Concrete are professional, many of them family members.  </p> <p>Ignacio took care of approvals for the gas line and my meter upgrade due to and upgrade in gas lines for our outdoor BQ and ultimate fireplace.  He also measured all my spaces and MDA to make sure we met the city's requirements and set up those appointments and made sure everything worked according to permits.  I would highly recommend Unique Concrete Creations.  I will never consider another company regarding my backyard work they are excellent and do long lasting work.  </p> Going with a cheaper contractor in the beginning is sunk cost and a waste of time and effort, dealing with that contractor and having to get rid of him took years off my life, life is too short.  Hire contractors who know what they are doing you cannot go wrong hiring Unique Concrete Creations.  I cannot wait to be finished and have the whole group over for a BQ they all feel like part of our family. <br />"

"I highly recommend this company. Our marble floor had stains from cleaning solution that had previously spilled on floor and so I called MB Marble Resurfacing and spoke to Mario to see if they could help. Mario is a real professional and very knowledgeable . He suggested I have our floor cleaned, resurfaced, polished and sealed. I felt very confident that I was going with the right company and he didn't let me down one bit. His partner Tomas finished our floors today and they look brand new and shiny. So beautiful. I'm very happy with the end result and I would hire them again without hesitation!!"

"Khiem and his team were great. We had a very clear design idea of what we were trying to achieve and DAC was able to achieve it at a reasonable cost. We found Khiem to be trustworthy and reliable. When unexpected conditions were discovered, he offered value engineering suggestions to complete the work, maintaining the design intent without exceeding our budget. The few plants that had issues, or items that were not installed per the documented design intent were quickly remedied without debate or added cost. He also clearly takes pride in his work and checked up a few times months later in person to ensure his work was holding up and is meeting expectations. In the end, it took a little longer than we originally anticipated to complete the work, but we were very satisfied with the result and would definitely hire DAC again in the future for our landscaping needs."

"It went very well.  Art is professional, he knows his job, was prompt, clean and thorough and cared about what he was doing in all aspects of the job.  Why I am not giving him an A is only because when he installed the marble in the 1/2 bath, he could not completely remove the grout or the glue that got on some of the marble tiles.  He did try very hard to remove it and in turn, used some sort of scrubber that ended up scratching the middle tile (of all places).  I tried later in the evening myself to remove the grout/glue, but could not.  He did try various times and did offer to remove and replace the scratched tile, but I didn't want to take a chance.  You can't really see it, but I can and it still looks beautiful.  The porcelain tile is perfect.  I am speculating he didn't have a whole lot of experience with marble, but my job did provide to him and to anyone else who would want it installed by him.  I also found, that in looking for someone to complete my job, two installers did not want to work with marble. One was trying to talk me out of it and instead install porcelain.  I think marble is a difficult installation. I would definitely hire Art again. <br />"

"Project Lead: Ben The Job: Rooftop Deck above garage needed to be ripped out and replace, new drainage needed to be installed The Good: Ben was very enthusiastic about the job and is a very nice guy. He made sure to explain what the job would entail, what needed to be done, why the problems were happening, ect. He was understanding about the funds for the job being locked up until the sale of one of my other properties went through. The beginning of the job went great, the framing was done well, more ceiling beams had to be replaced than originally thought which they did for no extra charge and they had some higher quality top layer material left over from another job that they used at no additional cost to us. The Bad: Going back to the demo part of the job, we were told that there was no need to move the boxes and various other things we had in the garage out or to cover them. Nobody covered them and so now we have boxes full of plywood debris from ripping up the deck. After the initial large work was done, a team was no longer sent out to do the finishing work. It was one guy, who came out 2-3 times a week, and we rarely got any notice on what days those would be. Often we were told he would be showing up one day, but then no one would show up with no explanation. Repeatedly we were told “oh, the guy is going to come out and finish the job on x day”, but then no one would show up, and when he did the job was not finished. We were told the job would take 10 days (and that that was estimating on the long side). The job was started on March 29th and didn’t finish until May 19th. It happened several times that Ben asked if I was free for him to come and discuss things later in the day, but then he would be a no show. There was a general lack of quality control with the finished work. Instead of quality control being done by the contractor, I had to go and find all of the problems myself (of which there were many on the first pass) and complain about them. Then the one guy came out a week later to fix them, but then new things came up, and I would have to complain about them, ect. In the end I just kind of felt it was ‘good enough’ and was so exhausted with the back and forth and taking time out of my work day to inspect the work and discuss what was wrong I just said it was fine so I could go on with my life."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Union City, CA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
