"I highly recommend Onn Point Restoration. Our back deck was originally built one story off the ground on sloping fill material and a previous owner added a roof structure to it after a bunch of settlement had already occurred. As a result, it was really wonky and challenging to fix. The footings were also shifting and at least one of the support posts was rotting. We hired Onn Point to level out the deck and replace the existing footings with new, deeper footings. They successfully decoupled the roof from the deck using temporary supports so they could level everything out. They also carefully dug the new footing holes all the way to bedrock by hand and drilled in rebar to ensure the new footings would not move. They knew the footing depth was important to me and showed me each completed excavation before they poured the concrete. Communication was excellent and the price was very reasonable."

"Very well. It started with the estimate visit by Ron. Unlike other contractors, he showed me just the necessary amount of work. For example, others told me my lally columns would need to be replaced and he showed me that the rust was superficial. That saved me hundreds of dollars. When they got there on time, the crew was obviously experienced and worked well with me and with each other. They worked efficiently, were very nice and cleaned up after themselves - inside and outside. They did little extras for me such as prying up a specialty floor tile to preserve it and fill in a channel which had been cut into the basement floor previously. I felt no hesitation to ask questions, which is kind of rare in work crews. They said the job would take 2 days and it took about 1.5 days. Another extra was I needed 2 new basement windows. 3 had been replaced previously and Ron took the time to order identical windows so all 5 windows would match. That was nice. All this for a reasonable price. I highly recommend B-Sure!"

"What a truly great experience working with this local family company. My husband and I knew that we needed to redo the insulation and drainage in our basement and researched local companies. We were impressed with what we heard and read about Wilcox Basement Systems so contacted them for an estimate. After a very thorough inspection of our basement and a very detailed explanation of options, we decided to schedule them to redo the insulation in our basement with the basement to beautiful system. We also had a dehumidifier and a new sump pump with drainage added. One thing I loved about them is they showed up when they said they would, on time, and put in full days to make sure the job was getting done in a timely manner. Anne kept me up-to-date by text every single day to let me know what they’d completed and what was next in the queue. All interactions I had with every member of the family who worked at my home was genuine and pleasant. Wholeheartedly recommend them!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Utica, NY

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
