"I purchased a Big Deal for a custom kitchen design January 2011. Here is what the the offer said.
"Young Painting  & Remodeling, a highly rated service provider on Angie's List, is
offering custom kitchen design services complete with measurements and a full set of plans for only $50! This service is normally valued at  $250,  saving Angie's List members $200!"

We scheduled an appointment in April, and Paul came out promptly. He appeared to be a nice, sincere, and hard-working young man. I explained that due to my husband's health problems, we could not handle a complete remodel all at one time. I am trying to update our house a little at a time as our budget and especially his health status allows. That is why I was attracted to the idea of a custom design. I had in mind a long-term plan as it were. I think he had in mind generating cabinetry installation work for his company. He had said that his company was in the process of changing from one that primarily did painting to one that did remodeling with a focus on cabinet installation. I told him that my husband's condition precluded anything that would cause a lot of dust and debris. I thought I might want to eventually get the cabinets painted, refaced or refinished but wasn't planning to replace them. And that other issues such as the walls and the lighting had a higher priority than the cabinets. I wanted to start with a color scheme for the kitchen/dining room and hall which are all open to one another. He said color wasn't really his thing, but that if I needed help, he might pull someone in as the job progressed. (Remember at the time of the big deal, the Company was named Young's Painting and Remodeling  rather than Young's Remodeling as it is now. I can perhaps be forgiven for thinking he might have some ideas about color)

He listened patiently to my ideas about what I wanted to accomplish and what I wanted to avoid. At one point he asked about how much I thought I could spend. I gave him what I considered to be the maximum figure for everything to be spent over time. He then said that with that amount he thought I could afford new cabinets after all. I did not say again that I wouldn't consider it. My reasons for not thinking I wanted new cabinets were not solely based on cost. I had already told him why I wasn't planning on new cabinets, but I decided to let him show me a design that might make me reconsider. He took some measurements and soon thereafter he left saying he would get a proposal to me as soon as he could.

He did indeed send me a proposal. It divided the work into categories such as demolition, plumbing, electrical, painting. Included was an estimate of hours of labor with the rate and a budget for materials. The total figure for the kitchen alone was for almost my maximum remodeling figure. More than half of the amount was for cabinets and counter-tops. There was no mention of what kind or configuration of cabinets I would get for this amount of money. I had mentioned that though I knew granite counter-tops were in style, I didn't think they would be a good idea for us because we both have arthritis in our hands and drop things more than the average person. With our current laminate counters, often things don't break. With granite, I'm pretty sure I would be cleaning up glass and china shards pretty much daily. Nonetheless 'granite countertop budget' was one of the items on the proposal. But the proposal included was no drawing, no dimensions, no description of materials to be used other than the granite for the counter-top.

I have the proposal. It is a pdf file.  I would attach it to this review to illustrate my point if I could see a way to do so. I do not consider it to be a design. I certainly don't see how anyone could claim it is a full set of plans. Instead, It is a list estimating what it would cost for this company to remodel my kitchen.  It does not appear to take into consideration my stipulation that I needed to do this a little at a time in order to minimize the stress to my husband. The voucher for the big deal specifically states there is no obligation to use the company for construction. The proposal does not appear to include any work on the dining part of the room. I did not buy the big deal in order to get an estimate. I'm pretty sure there are contractors who offer free estimates. Considering the amount of time he spent, it is perhaps worth the $50 I paid, as it does give me an idea of how much this contractor would charge for certain services such as prepping and painting the room, although I interpreted it to mean those costs would only apply if I accepted the entire proposal.

I can see no way in which it has the $250 value claimed in the Big Deal. This company has very high ratings on Angie's List. They may indeed do fine work. However I bought a promise of a custom kitchen design. I just don't think what was provided remotely qualifies as a design.

I can understand why a remodeling contractor would not be interested in a piecemeal project such as mine. I've had a fair amount of work done over the past few years. Some people are pretty good at dealing with grouchy old sick people. Some aren't. Some choose not to consider even trying. However, again, I stress that the big deal was for a design.

By contrast I paid $99 for a different Big Deal for custom deck design. I got not only a detailed design for the deck which was far more creative and practical than what I had envisioned, but also a design with dimensions for a garden arch and a sketch for the main backyard garden. This contractor did include, as a separate item, a proposal for his company to build the deck and arch he had designed. I could clearly see what I would be getting. Guess which contractor I hired.

I am amending this review after being contacted by Mr, Young. As I mentioned above, I think he is a sincere and hardworking contractor. He offered to  refund my money as I was not satisfied with the service he provided. He did so, and I appreciated that though it was not necessary. Were our circumstances different, I might consider working with him. As it is, and after consulting a couple of other contractors, I'm thinking even a minor kitchen remodel has too much potential to cause adverse health problems for my husband. So it will have to be one thing at a time or not at all. Again, that's why I want a design, so I know where I'm trying to go.

"I am very lucky that I found Vantage Point Exteriors. They helped me deal with an emergency problem very quickly.
I inadvertently locked myself out on the balcony of my condo two days ago without a cell phone or keys. Unfortunately I had to kick in the glass to get back inside. I needed to get this glass replaced ASAP. After a frustrating experience talking with a few other contractors in the area, I bought an Angie's List account and found Vantage Point.
Matt was quick to respond, and communicated very well throughout the process. The two gentlemen who came out to perform the work were very professional, and even cleaned up several areas of broken glass that I had missed. They worked very quickly and efficiently to replace the glass, and their workmanship was top notch. I also had them replace the door handle, so I can't get locked out again.
Thanks again Vantage Point for the quick response and excellent work."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Wamego, KS

Trex decking can become slippery when wet, but it's less slippery than traditional wood decking. To enhance safety during wet or icy conditions, you can add aluminum nonslip treads to your stairs and use rock salt to prevent ice buildup. Just remember to rinse off salt residue to keep your deck looking its best.

Trex decking is water-resistant but not completely waterproof. While the boards repel moisture and resist deterioration, it's important to ensure the substructure is properly protected. Using a system like Trex RainEscape can help keep the area beneath your deck dry and prolong the life of the supporting structure. Proper installation with effective drainage and ventilation will help prevent any moisture-related issues.

Trex decking requires only minimal maintenance and is designed so that regular cleaning is sufficient to preserve its appearance. The boards need to be swept and rinsed with a sprayer to remove debris, and no sealing is necessary because the water-resistant design prevents moisture damage. Maintaining your deck with a consistent cleaning routine helps sustain its durability and visual appeal, eliminating the extra expense of sealing that wood decks incur at costs between $600 and $1,300.
