"We interviewed and received estimates from three blacktop and drainage professionals in the local area. One was hugely over priced and the other two were pretty comparable, with Alex Cole being slightly higher. It basically came down to our confidence in the experience of the workers and how they explained what they were going to do for our project. Tim was an absolute pelasure to work with and Renee in their office was very helpful. <br /> The crew came out on a Thursday for the prep work and laid the pavement, sealed the driveway and completed most of the drainage work on Friday. They waited about 1 and a half weeks to do the final grading and seeding of the lawn where they did the drainage work to allow the ground to settle first. <br /> The only reason that I couldn't give them a full and quot;Aand quot; was that I think they could have been more proactive in explaining why they were waiting to finish the final grading/lawn repairs. When I came home Friday night and found the lawn still torn up I was a bit dismayed as I had assumed based on our previous conversations that the work would by 100% complete Friday night. No note was left behind to explain and I had to wait until Monday to find out what was going on. Their answer satisfied me and when they came to complete the work they were very quick and efficient. I would definitely use them again. <br />"

"We asked Russ for an estimate to remove a buried 500 gallon propane tank from our front yard.  Within hours he stopped by to look at what had to be done, gave us an estimate, returned with a load of soil for backfill, and began work.  Before the day ended, he had unearthed the tank, back filled the hole, and completely contoured the area.  When he left, the yard looked better than when he arrived. <br /> <br /> Russ was easy to work with, kept his word on availability and cost, and was extremely personable.  We have already agreed to have him return in the spring for some additional landscaping work and would recommend him without reservation."

"We think it went well, although we're waiting for the next heavy rain to really test the new drainage. Bill responded to our emergency call for help when storm water backed into our basement floor drain. He came out to review the current drainage and suggested some things we could do to address the problem. Then, as we were bracing for more rain, he sent a crew (and came himself!) to install the downspout drainage. His responsiveness was excellent. His crew took a break from another job, driving 45 minutes to get here, and get the work done to prevent a third water backup. The men worked quickly and efficiently, took away the old clogged pipes, covered the area they'd dug and reseeded. He listened to our concerns, spent time looking around the property to study the drainage situation, offered good advice and shared in our concern about getting something done before more rain came into the basement. We hope we don't need Mr. Kirk's services again soon, but if we do we'll call him first. <br />"

"I responded to a GravelGator ad in a local marketplace newspaper. I called and explained that I had a large driveway that originally was covered in gravel but needed sprucing up. I made an appointment for the next day and John arrived on time. He surveyed the project and spoke with me about options and costs. I felt he explained my options very well and helped me to make the best decision. We agreed on timing and cost. Again, he showed up on time and completed the work on time. He followed through on every detail and now, several months later the driveway looks great. His recommendation for special treatment in certain areas of the driveway proved to be important. That area receives much more runoff and had more materials packed in. John knew this because he took the time to look at the grounds and determined where the runoff was great. I highly recommend GravelGator based upon this experience."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Waterloo, NY

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
