"First, when I asked Tyler for a copy of the contract I signed, he said no. I see that as strange. I asked again and took it and made a copy for myself. I am glad I did. Beware of this. He gives no warranty. Read the contract carefully. It covers him and not you. He told me 1 week for the bathroom. It took 3 weeks. Before Tyler came to pick up his payment today he texted me the following - Fan $400 and window casing $350. Total $7750 very good price with that tile you picked I thought the wall tile was 12x12 when I saw the box normally that tile would cost much much more to lay it took extra two days so any tip would be greatly appreciated thank you ð ð ¼ So let me explain, we agreed on contract for $7,500 for a bathroom remodel with me buying my own materials. Installation of vent included in scope of work. He charged me $400 for a vent fan which costs $119.00 at Lowes. This is dishonesty. I showed him the price for vent fan and the contract where vent installation is included. He told my husband he will cased a window and placed molding in bath which he said would be easier work for him rather than sparkle, drying and sanding takes longer and more work. Then he wants to charge me additional for molding. He forgot sparkle and sanding included in contract ($7,500) and he is replacing that for his convenience with molding. It is like paying twice for the same thing. He did no work orders and discussed no pricing for any of this earlier with me. He only told me the vent fan would cost $108.00 earlier and I told him to pick it up for us. Today, he inflated prices, and gave me a final bill as seen above. His tile guy worked one and a half day on the tile installation on bath wall. They flooded my kitchen ceiling and I spent one half day repainting it at my own cost. What about my labor? He parked his huge garbage dumpster and tool truck in my driveway for days one after the other and I parked 4 vehicles in the street. He does not care about what he did to the homeowner. Your time lost and sacrifices do not count. Do not inflate prices on people. Not good business. Be honest."

"Nick did an awesome job with our medicine cabinets. His work went above and beyond. When he noticed too-large gaps between the doors and frames, he drove all the way to the building supply store to get better-sized parts. Would definitely recommend him."

"Jose and his crew did an outstanding job on our extensive interior and exterior renovation, which included a new addition. The project covered everything from a new structural roof with shingles and skylights to new construction windows and doors, siding, a Trex deck, and fully renovated kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. They also refinished a bedroom and installed beautiful hardwood floors. As with any large project, a few unexpected challenges came up, but Jose handled them with professionalism and kept everything moving forward smoothly. His craftsmanship is excellent, and he’s not only easy to work with but also patient and highly skilled at problem-solving. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire Jose again for future projects and highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality work and a reliable contractor."

"We have done projects with different contractors, but putting an addition on to our house was by far the biggest project we had ever done. We were terrified of its breadth and complexityâ particularly as concerned making the house comfortable for my elderly parents and more accessible for my son, who uses a wheelchair. We met with several contractors and chose HDB both because their bid was more reasonable and because we had a gut feeling of trust that, fortunately for us, never ebbed throughout the process. Choosing HDB was the best decision we have ever made in the 10 years we have owned our house, and we will continue to solicit their expertise for any future work. At every step of the process they demonstrated their authenticity, integrity, empathy and expertise. For questions we had about anything, big or small, we received a response within a day. We added two and half rooms and bathrooms to ones side of the house. Based on his vast experience in our area, Dale had important, smart suggestions for modest but powerful improvements elsewhere in the house that would not have occurred to me but proved to be invaluable--and increased the value of our home dramatically. He navigated town permit issues. Cost was very reasonable and if there were any questions, he was open to discussing and adjusting. Diane had superb design instincts, which saved us from hiring another professional, and as part of the fee she sent wise suggestions for vanities, light fixtures, paint colors, rugs and more; and then ordered the items directly. Both obviously cared about us and the project and made everything as easy as possible for us. Most projects we had done previously had faltered at the end, with smaller punch list items; but as usual, Diane and Dale were responsive til the final t was crossed and I dotted. HDB is a rare company with skill and expertise but also with a passion for their work and a spirit of kindness and concern for their clients that made a house addition â something we dreaded--actually fun. Thanks HDB!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Westhampton, NY

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
