"Vic did an OUTSTANDING job on our front landscaping!! He was professional, punctual, respectful and helped us with landscaping design. It turned out sooo good that we asked him to come back for a 2nd job on the side of our house ( garden area). Our neighbors were impressed too and he also did work for many of our neighbors."

"We had it down to two landscape contractors and went with Clean Cut. They did a wonderful job from nothing. We were so happy with the first part we have hired them three more times for additional work from tree plantings, additional paver work and complete transformation of our back yard. I would definitely recommend them"

"<p>We discovered Roose Bros. through researching a company for weekly lawn maintenance services and considered it a bonus that they would be able to help address some landscape issues around the property.  After obtaining a quote for landscape services and seeing the creativity and artistic ability of this company, we decided to move forward.</p> <p> </p> <p>The job lasted three days in total and involved complete removal of the existing landscaping as well as lawn directly in front of the house.  Roose Bros. developed a plan, which included Densi Yews, Blue Hydrangea, Burning Bushes, Melba Heuchera, Lamium, and Maiden Grass which primarily do well in shade (our house faces north), boulders to surround a large silver maple tree in the front yard, a poured concrete landscape border, and installation of a new porch and walkway using pavers.  Installation of new sod and leveling of the front yard was included in this job, as was the installation of a timed sprinkler system.  </p> <p> </p> <p>The transformation was completed during the work week and primarily when my wife and I were at work.  The team was efficient and creative.  The staff in the office is extremely professional and very often responded to emails I sent very quickly and not during typical business hours.  I have found the crew at Roose Bros. to be very responsive and collaborative and I would not hesitate to call on them when considering making upgrades to our back yard in the future.  </p>"

"Started out really good. Jim met with us, listened to our needs and preferences, and put together a solid design that met our requirements and fit in our $15K budget. Construction on our project was started and finished at the agreed-upon dates. So, what didn't we like? 1) The biggest concern was the drainage basin that was created in the front yard. A 5 x 11 pit was dug and filled with landscaping stones; then sodded over so it would not be visible. The pit receives the runoff from the downspouts, sump pump, and french drain along the side of the house. A genius idea, except the sod over the pit all died early the following season. When we called Jim he said there was no reason the grass shouldn't have grown, but he would be happy to do a proposal for a hardscape (additional cost). It wasn't until this year we dug into the dead sod and discovered the reason - the sod was laid right on top of the rocks and felt and no topsoil was used. Our voicemails on Jim's office and cell numbers, inquiring about the pit were not returned. 2) Issued reported within the one-year warranty were only partially addressed. Some areas of dead sod were replaced immediately, but a few dead plants we reported were never replaced. Joint sand that eroded on the patio was also not addressed. These were after we emailed a reminder the following spring, and were promised the issues would be fixed that season. 3) Jim said with certainty that a layer of topsoil was added in the yard before the new sod was installed. We have since dug into several places in the yard while doing later projects, and found this was not the case. 4) Jim did not seem to have an appreciation for modern irrigation systems. Though we spent the extra money to extend and improve our sprinkler system to cover all the new landscaping, Jim insisted on our hand watering every plant and bush daily for the remainder of the season, which took something like 2 hours a day of moving the hose from plant to plant. (until we added splitters on the hose to water multiple plants at once, but still a lot of effort) 5) Other than telling us to water for hours, no care instructions were provided. 6) The last couple times I have left messages on Jim's office or cell number, even with just simple questions, they were not returned. So, did we get our money's worth? Mostly, in terms of the work that was done. Some corners were cut but overall our requirements were met. But was I treated the way I would treat a customer who entrusted me with 15K of work? Given the missed warranty issues and unreturned calls, definitely not."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Westland, MI

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
