"We’ve had 2 landscape contracts performed by Frederick Landscaping Inc. The first included paver installation for 2 pads and walkways to them, 15 Sabal Palms, electrical to both pads, 2 lamp posts on each pad, assembly of a gazebo over the jacuzzi, wiring for the jacuzzi, up lights on all of the palms, rerouting existing sprinkler system, etc. The work was done very well and professionally at a fair price (beat out 2 other landscape companies). Justin quickly addressed a couple of issues with the installation and we were very satisfied with the end result. We awarded the second bid to them without competing bids based on how well they did on the first contract."

"I trusted this company to do a major job in our yard in March; grinding up tree roots, bringing in top soil, leveling the yard, and spraying hydroseed with Bermuda grass ? with the hope of finally having a nice, healthy lawn. I spent almost $5,000 on this project, and unfortunately the results have been extremely disappointing. A couple days after they finished the job, we had a very heavy rain that caused all of the hydroseed to wash away. I was able to get them to come back a couple weeks later and re-hydroseed. I thought it would be great from here. I was wrong. I followed the instructions I was given and watered the grass twice daily, but the hydroseed mulch from the second spray never broke down, which caused moss/fungus to grow and ultimately killed off all of the grass. Instead of the lush Bermuda lawn I was promised, I was left with bare dirt and invasive crabgrass taking over. I ended up having to rake up the failed hydroseed myself, hire another company to aerate the soil,"

"I am writing in hopes of saving others from having the experience I have  had with Joe Brugnone and Ava Gardens handling my landscaping needs. Joe comes across as an amiable and knowledgeable person, a professional that knows how to do his business and keep his customers satisfied. My experience was that this image does not translate well into real life practice. A few specific examples may help to explain a few of the  reasons for this conclusion:   - Lawn mowing sometimes scalped patches down to the roots, roughly  once a month. The clippings from mowing were often blown into our shrub beds (covering the mulch), or onto the neighbor's yard. Spraying to keep weeds out of the beds was supposed to be included in the weekly lawn and bed maintenance. This was not done, and weeds easily grew in the beds. I mentioned this to Joe on several occasions. At first he was receptive, reaffirmed his commitment to customer satisfaction, and said he would take care of it. When reporting this again later in the year he  characterized me as being a 'complainer', even as we walked around the  yard and he manually pulled weeds as high as his knees from the beds.  Twenty percent (20%) of the contracted lawn and bed maintenance visits  were not provided.   - Lawn treatments for fertilizing and weed management were applied so  thinly as to be ineffective (green stripes in lawn, continued abundant weed growth). Only 2 or 3 of the seven promised lawn treatments took place during the year. The lawn had a sickly green / yellow / brown appearance with weeds being the greenest part of the lawn. At one point he said he did a thorough spot spraying of weeds throughout the lawn, but there was very little wilting, yellowing or dying of the weeds, which continued sprouting and growing unabated. His explanation was that weed seeds were blowing onto my lawn from neighbors, and he couldn't keep up with mother nature. A different service provider has since had no such difficulty.   - Pruning of shrubs and bushes was performed in a slashing and  hacking fashion, and the resulting appearance was embarrassing.  Misshapen bushes with bare and flat sides were common. When I walked  around the yard with Joe sharing my concerns, he said the shrubs would  grow back. He also committed to doing the pruning himself next time, to  ensure a proper outcome. Unfortunately, 'next time' never arrived (my  requests were put off due to drought, heat, other projects, "within the  next couple weeks", etc.), and the shrubs were left to become gangling  and twice their normal size. In short - my lawn, shrubs and beds were in worse condition after 12  months (beginning in August 2023) of being cared for by Joe and Ava  Gardens than they were to begin with. Worse yet, we paid for the year's  services in advance, and are still waiting for a refund for the  contracted services that were not provided.  Commitments from Joe for a  timely and amicable settlement have not happened. Buyer beware! **Update 2/2/25 - The negotiated amount to refund for the cost of undelivered services agreed to on 9/23/24 was paid today."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Wilmington, NC

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
