"I would happily recommend their services. Awesome father and sons team. I had an amazing experience with this company. I was so pleased with the beautiful landscaping in my front yard. They went above and beyond to answer any questions or concerns I may have had. Quality of work is impeccable. One time both days and cleaned up afterwards. I can’t say enough good things about Jorge and the team. Thank you guys so much for a job well done. I will be contacting this company for future projects"

"Chris came out initially to take a look at the back yard and to discuss the project. I had asked him to put together a design based on some initial ideas and requirements of our own. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about installing patios. We discussed some issues with needing to improve water run off from the back of the house. We were in contact numerous times before start day to refine the design and choose pavers and lighting. Chris was always very responsive to my emails and calls and always pleasant to talk with. On start day, he showed up with his crew and a slew of machinery to excavate and prepare the base for the patio. He worked with me to mark off the perimeter and shape of the patio. When the size of the patio ended up bigger than what I had initially sent as measurements (my error), he didn’t complain- he just said he would order the additional pavers and we’d adjust the final invoice. I had asked him to try and not rip up the surrounding lawn too much and so they laid plywood and made sure that the skidsteers and other trucks stayed on that one small area. This was a real sign of their professionalism to me. I was amazed how the patio took shape in just 1 week. The crew worked through blistering heat and never complained. At the end of week 1, the patio was installed minus the final 4 cap lights since we had to wait for the lights to arrive. I make a partial payment to Chris for the work completed and then 1 week later, he came out and finished the lighting and worked through the electrical hook-ups to the house with our electrician on that day. We used pavers from a vendor who Chris uses and I was pleased with the look of what we chose. The pavers were installed well and Chris used polymeric sand to hold them in place. The job site was cleaned up every night and they moved excavated soil and aggregate base and we never had a “mess” at the house. Part of the project involved them ripping out a concrete landing outside of our adjacent garage access door and I never saw the broken concrete because they just hauled it away. Overall the patio looks incredible and I wouldn’t have asked for a better experience with an installer than what we got with Chris and his crew. I felt that the pricing of the project was very fair and that Chris and his guys were dedicated to finishing the patio as quickly as possible."

"They got at it as soon as was possible considering our crappy spring weather. Great down to earth people to work with. All the work was completed in one day, and was done just as I wanted. Based on the work they did for me, I would recommend them to anyone! <br />"

"Daniel and his team completely understood what I wanted. They rebuilt the steps using as many of the existing stones as possible, cut new stones as necessary to match, filled in missing mortar, powerwashed, and sealed. The final bill was actually less than their estimate. The end result is stunning. I wish I could post before and after pictures."

"From start to finish Eric coordinated everything with the city, contractors, and turned our backyard from a trees and weeds disaster zone into a beautifully landscaped backyard.  We still talk about how impressed we were with the speed of this huge project (start to finish, under a month!) while never cutting a corner.  Eric won't allow you to cut a corner, and now that the project is finished, we know why.   Every inch of the project turned out according to the design and engineered layout.  Eric was constantly on site and involved with every step.  We are so impressed with him, his crew and the way it all turned out.  A huge thanks to Boulder Works. <br />"

"The job went very well overall and the final product is excellent.  <br /> <br /> I contacted Steve at Colonial Stone for a quote on replacing our concrete steps with stone steps.  Steve was prompt, polite, responsive, professional, and very informative.  He had several recommendations and useful guidance to offer us to ensure we made a choice we would be happy with.  He offered options about the design and types of stone and was able to articulate the pros and cons of different options. He provided a written quote with the options we discussed.  He explained that due to our site conditions (a retaining wall that prevented accessing the steps with equipment), the cost would be higher than if the site were more accessible because signficant manual labor would be required.  <br /> <br /> Steve worked with us to schedule the work at a time that would not conflict with other projects and kept us informed of the schedule.  <br /> <br /> Nick was the mason in charge of the stone work and he was very polite and professional.  He worked until 9 pm on the first day of work, to get the steps removed and ready for installation of the stone the next day. <br /> <br /> When I arrived home on the first day of work the concrete rubble had been piled in front of my neighbor's house.  I called Steve and asked if he would ensure that staging (including rubble piles) occurred in front of our home as much as possible so as not to bother the neighbors.  Steve was very understanding of my concern and explained that the dumpster had not arrived as planned that day but it would be delivered the next day and it would be placed in front of my house and rubble removed from street and placed in dumpster.  The next day the dumpster was delivered but it was placed in front of my neighbor's house.  Thankfully, my neighbors are very easy to work with and they did not mind at all, but I felt bad that the dumpster for work at our house sat in front of their house.  I did not follow up with Steve and ask that the dumpster be moved because the work was only going to take a couple of days.  <br /> <br /> I contacted Colonial Stone and requested the repair of a stone that was on the house and falling off.  They gladly re-attached this stone wtihout any additional charge.  Upon Nick's discovery of a rotten threshold board, he replaced it with stone, told us about it, and did not charge anything additional, which was a very nice solution.  <br /> <br /> The crew did a nice job in minimizing impact to the yard.  We had recently completed signficant landscaping (which would have been smarter to complete AFTER the stone steps, but we didn't plan ahead), and there was very minimal impact to the new sod and no damage to the landscape stone work. <br /> <br /> The stone steps turned out beautiful!  We are very pleased with the design, the advice we received in choosing the stone and design, and the workmanship.  <br /> <br /> Clean-up of the area around the steps could have been better.  We found quite a few concrete chunks (from the demolition) scattered around the wood chips, and several piles of cement dust in the woodchips and grass.  It was a minor issue for us to clean this up but it was a bit disappointing.  <br /> <br /> Throughout the project I spoke with Sherry in the office several times and Sherry was always very hepful, professional, and very interested in meeting our needs.  After the job was complete we received phone calls from both Nick and Steve checking in to ensure everything was completed to our satisfaction.  The final bill came in at the quoted price. <br /> <br /> We are very pleased with the steps and would recommend Colonial Stone as a contractor.  <br /> <br />"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Winsted, MN

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
