"Nelson Electric is the best electrical contractor I’ve used in my thirty-eight years of owning and updating my homes. It is difficult to find an excellent contractor who is willing to take on a major remodeling project in old construction, and who handles it efficiently, cost-effectively, and with perfection. This time we were remodeling a 110 year-old bathroom. When we got down to the studs, joists, and rafters, the plans were worthless because of all the surprises. Unphased, the crew was able to trace every hidden wire to destination and source, re-route them as needed, install a new, larger, circuit breaker box, pull wire through neatly, clearly identify and label everything, and finish beautifully the lighting, overhead heating, floor heating, and exhaust fixtures, making for a beautiful bath. Thank you, Scott!"

"Jack and his crew did a great job with the work we needed done which ended up being more complicated than we had anticipated. He charged by the job rather than the hour, which worked out well for us since his crew had to pull half the wires out of the electrical box to figure out what previous electricians had done in our condo. Jack and his crew were honest and efficient and I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again."

"Daniel addressed a not so straightforward switch replacement that I had botched. Not only did have to install it right but also had to diagnose and replace the circuit breaker in the panel. He also had to further diagnose a wire that had been melted and address that as well. He showed great problem solving skills, cleaned up and was extremely professional and friendly. Even though the job took much longer than expected, he still only charged what he had initially stated. Would hire again."

"On Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, three young men came to install my new electric heating/cooling system. (Lennox Air Handler CBA25UH-036 and Lennox 13ACXN-036) They called before they came and came on time, as well. They were friendly and polite and were very respectful of my property and put down floor coverings over my carpeting. They all wore shoe coverings and masks (due to Covid-19). One man worked out on my deck installing the air conditioner, and mainly one other young man worked on installing the furnace with the assistance of one of the men at times. It seemed like one of the three men was in training. Due to the fact that the new furnace was rather large for the small closet area where it needed to fit in to, the young man who was mainly installing the furnace was able to overcome the challenges that he faced with the help of one of the other men and he was able to fit it in. Thankfully they did not need to drill any extra holes into the ceiling or walls to install the furnace and I was very thankful for that! They were there for at least eight hours. I was hoping that I would finally have heat that day, but I was told that the heat exchange part was cracked and they would have to send someone else out to install the new part. Before leaving, they cleaned up everything and did not leave anything at all behind for me to deal with. They also ran the air conditioner for quite some time to make sure that it was working properly, which I was thankful for because it's very important for technicians to make sure that each job is done properly before moving on to the next one. Since the job was not yet completed I only paid a little over half of the price that was due to be paid and would pay the remaining amount when the job was completely done. A woman from Four Seasons Customer Service called me later that day letting me know that someone could come that night between 9p.m. and midnight, but I chose to wait until the next day for someone to come out to install the part. She was very pleasant and helpful. On Saturday, October 3, 2020, technician, Santino M. called to let me know that he would arrive at my home soon to install the part. He was also very respectful of my home and wore shoe coverings (as well as a mask). He was very friendly, kind, and caring and did an excellent job of installing the new part. He carefully read the instructions and checked and rechecked all the wiring to make sure that everything was installed properly. It was a blessing to finally have heat! He made sure that my furnace was working well for me before he left and he also gave me helpful tips, providing me with some information that I needed to make sure that my system would work well for me for many years to come. He provided excellent customer service to me, as well, going above and beyond normal good customer service by taking a few extra minutes and leading me step by step in applying for my Lennox warranty online before he left. I would definitely give Santino M. a five plus star rating on his installation and for his kindness and excellent customer service! Thank you so much, Santino! As a whole I was very satisfied with the service that I received from Four Seasons Heating And Air Conditioning in Chicago. Although I was very concerned at first after reading some of the reviews regarding what some customers experienced dealing with other Four Seasons Heating And Air Conditioning companies in other areas, so far I have found this Chicago based company to be very caring about their customers and they seem to do their very best to provide fair and affordable prices for their customers and very good customer service. (Thank you so much, Keith W.)! I did sign up for the extended 12 year warranty, so if I do have any issues in the future with this company I will update this review to express any concerns that I may have."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Winthrop Harbor, IL

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
