"Pat and Midwest Landscaping did a great job on my yard. The plants had literally taken over and we had some poison ivy growing between our fence and the neighbor’s. In one morning they trimmed things that had gotten too big, moved plants to space them out better, weeded and got rid of the poison ivy problem. Really the best part was that they used all of our own plants, so we didn’t have to buy anything new. Whenever we need more help with the landscaping, we will be calling Pat."

"The team and Pavestone Brick Paving and second to none. They are extremely professional from Mario who came out and went over every aspect of the project to the crew that completed the patio. The crew that installed our patio showed up right on time and worked very quickly but did not cut corners when it came to quality of there workmanship. I was truly happy with the experience I had with Pavestone. They will be the only company I would ever use and will recommend."

"Star Tuckpointing did superb work on our recent masonry project. The lintels above the windows in the octagon at the front of our 80+ year old bungalow were rusted and deteriorating, causing the bricks to shift and, ultimately, leading to water leakage into the living room ceilings. Star Tuckpointing was the only vendor I spoke with who, right off the bat, offered to clean and reuse the original brick. That's huge for repairs to an older building as there is no way to match those classic bricks. That endeared these guys to me right away. But it was the experience of having the work done that tells me I made the right choice. Star Tuckpointing is a family run and operated business - the crew consisted of father and sons, uncles and cousins, and the attention to detail and pride in their work exhibited is notable. The reconstruction is seamless. They installed new windows and rebuilt the wall, the octagon parapet and decorative cap stones. The mortar is a darn near perfect match. The cleaned and reused bricks look great. They replaced a poorly designed downspout with a new scupper box and replaced the roofing behind the parapet with new materials, work that looks better than it must've when the building was brand new. I'm confident that we'll have no more water issues. In addition to the parapet rebuild, the crew went around and spot tuckpointed all the various cracks, touched up the brick arches above window openings, etc. Everything looks great! We had originally intended to forego rebuilding the original stone retaining wall for the garden along the front of the house, after all, it's just a garden wall, nothing structural or that would cause any immediate problems, but after having the other work done, the cracked and leaning wall looked so bad compared to the beautiful new front of the building that we added it on. Now the home looks fantastic! The work was performed quickly and efficiently. The site was cleaned up after each and every day's work. It was a delight to have these guys on the job and if the need for other masonry work arises in the future, I know I have only one call to make. Thank you to Peter and Boycheck and the whole family for a good well done."

"General Masonry did a great job on my chimney and the top concrete cap. They completed all sill that need tuck pointing and also found other settlement cracks that were not part of the contract that they fix. I was very pleased with the job that they did."

"Chris and his team are excellent! We had a large project at hand and after calling several contractors, Chris called me to set up an appointment while others were delayed or did not call at all. Chris was prompt with his quote and offered suggestions to help streamline the process. We had several contractors to work (plumbers and foundation repair) with and Chris offered to take the lead so not to miss anything. He was on the job with his crew and stayed in touch with us throughout the process. Our patio looks great and even after install, Chris checks in to ensure nothing was missed. His quality is excellent and his quote was reasonable. He is very organized with his crew and is clear on expectations. Without hesitation, Hooks Landscaping is the only company to use when considering large or small patio projects. The paver patio and workmanship is excellent!"

"This is the 4th time this year I've used Roger and his company for landscape projects around my house. Projects hve included driveway extension through installation of driveway pavers; planting of 20 shrubs, weeding and shrub trimming and removal of lava stone mulch and replacement with hardwood mulch around my whole house. I can not say enough great things about Roger and his firm. They are hardworking, polite, effiicent, and have very reasonble pricing. I highly recommend this firm to anyone! <br />"

"From beginning to end, the quality of the initial consultation with Hynek, the cost of the estimate, the tear down and rebuild was outstanding. The men who did the tear down came on time and worked tirelessly to maximize their efforts at the house. The gentleman who performed the rebuild were high quality craftsman-masons who really know how to work with concrete and bluestone. I was very impressed with their attention to detail. The guys took their time and worked meticulously placing the stones in a symmetrical pattern. I am thrilled with the final outcome. My front stoop which is pretty big is now a stunning, strong and solid rebuild that will last for years. Thanks Hynek."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Wood Dale, IL

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
