"Hugh's three workers were fantastic. They completed the work on the deck replacement in a day-and-a-half. The work was done cleanly with no damage to the landscaping that is so close to the project. Clean up when the project was completed is superior to any other we had done in the past. The refurbished storm door looks brand new and is a welcoming addition to the project. Hugh contacted us the same day as our request and showed up for the initial estimate on time. I cannot emphasize more what a pleasant experience it was having Hugh and his workers take care of our project. HNI is being highly recommended by us, and we will be calling him for additional projects in the future. The quality of the work done far exceeds the cost. Thank You. Hugh"

"Mark and his crew can do anything. They will do it faster than anyone. And they will do it right, and at a reasonable price. I hired Mark to put in a new septic. I asked his advice on another project I needed done - an old wooden garage floor that had rotted through to the beams in the sub-basement supporting the back of the house. Several companies had given me complicated answers about what it would take to fill the sub-basement and pour a new concrete slab for the garage. With Mark I had a choice of practical solutions and price quotes for each solution within 24 hours. Literally by the time I told him what I wanted done he was setting up to start work on the septic. Within a week the septic was done - he had landscaped the yard so that it looked better than before and seeded everything. The next day he and his crew started on the sub-basement/garage. A week later both jobs were complete. Not only that, Mark had landscaped around the house to ensure water would not undermine the foundation, put down a layer of stone under the deck to keep the area from eroding and reseeded the entire area. Every step of the way he and his wife Maggi sent pictures of the work that had been done and kept me informed on the status of the project - which is invaluable when you are not there to see whats going on. I could not recommend any person or any company more highly. This is someone who clearly loves what he does, really cares about the work hes doing and delivers more than you expect. And the results are amazing."

"Purchased the deal in the evening on Friday Feb 12, 2016. At time of purchase I advised vendor that best way to reach me is by email or Angie's messaging. Also provided two possible dates in March for the work. Winston responded the next day via Angie's message, and we set up the service date for my  next weekday off, March 2. And I sent him some pictures of the plumbing and street valve. Could not get a commitment on an arrival time, but he called me that morning and advised he had a 9am dentist appointment, and would arrive after that. Showed up with his helper about 1.5 hours later. We could not get the street valve cover off, and thought it belonged to the city, so I made arrangements for Winston to come back today, March 15.
I called the city water dept, and they sent someone over, he said it was not their valve, it was mine and he couldn't touch it, I guess each city is different?.
Anyway, I got the cover off with the help of a saw, a big hammer and a pipe wrench in time for Winston to come back today. We communicated via Angie's messaging in the meantime. Still could not get commitment to arrival time, although I asked for 8am.
Called Winston at 8:15 this morning and he said he would be her by 9:15, arrived at  9:00. We could not get the street valve closed, it was stuck. Not surprised, as it has not been accessed in at least 30 years!. We decided he would put the new valve just downstream of my existing shutoff, and from now on, will not use the old one to prevent further leaks thru the valve stem packing. I also asked him to rebuild the hose bib in the garage adjacent to the main valve, and install heat tape on the pipe before wrapping it (I already had the heat tape, just never got around to installing it. When attempting to replace the washer in the hose bib, the retaining screw broke, so he installed a new hose bib into the old valve body for me. Although I was willing, Winston did not charge extra for the extra trip and the extras I asked him to do.
Overall, I am more than satisfied with this experience. My only complaint is not getting an advance commitment on arrival times. But once I did get a time, he was punctual, even early. Would give an A- on responsiveness if I could. But overall, an A experience!
Will definitely use A REAL PLUMBER again. In fact, we already discussed installing a freeze-proof valve for my backyard hose bib.

"Charles Harris arrived to my home promptly at the time of our appointment. He was extemely professional and congenial. He came with the necessary tools and equipment to diagnose the problem. My water heater was leaking water and needed to be replaced. Charles quoted a very reasonable price to replace the water heater. He expertly replaced the water heater in a reasonable amount of time and disposed of the old water heater. He was courteous, pleasant and extremely reassuring. Several hours after installing the new water heater he called to assure that the water heater was working properly and that I was satisfied with the repair. I would definitely recommend Charles to anyone who needs plumbing service."

FAQs for septic system installation and replacement projects in Woodstock, NY

The smallest standard septic system uses a 500-gallon tank, which costs between $875 and $1,150 installed. This size works well for single-occupant dwellings with minimal wastewater production. However, many local regulations specify minimum tank sizes, so check with your building department before committing to this compact option. Some jurisdictions require at least 750 gallons regardless of home size to ensure adequate waste processing capacity.

The installation timeline varies based on site conditions, permit processing, and contractor schedules. The process includes obtaining permits, conducting soil tests, excavation, tank placement, leach field construction, and final connections. Weather conditions, soil challenges, and inspection scheduling can all affect the overall timeline. It's wise to begin planning well in advance of when you need the system operational.

The most economical approach is to install a conventional anaerobic system with a plastic tank. To minimize costs while maintaining legality, obtain multiple quotes from licensed installers, consider scheduling during their slower seasons, and handle basic site preparation yourself. Never skip permits or required testing to save money—illegal installations can result in significant fines and mandatory removal, ultimately costing far more than doing it right initially.

Regular pumping helps prevent system failures and extends operational life. Most small systems require pumping every three to five years, though frequency depends on household size and usage patterns. Pumping services cost between $290 and $530, making this maintenance expense relatively minor compared to potential repair costs ranging from $500 to $2,600 for neglected systems. Establishing a regular maintenance schedule based on your installer's recommendations helps avoid costly emergency services.
