"We had a rental property which we needed to update and remodel the kitchen of. Christian came out and was very professional, respectful and had a ton of insight regarding our project. Wealth of experience between Christian and his father. The work was completed on time and on budget. We truly could not have asked for a better general contractor. I would highly highly recommend Harris and Sons to anyone looking for a remodeling contractor."

"Grant and his team did an excellent job installing a new gas fireplace along with a mantel and custom hearth. Communication was great, very friendly service, and high quality work. I would highly recommend Linnius construction for any home repairs and remodels."

Customers say: Quick response

"Excellent work. It took longer than expected but I'd rather have great results that take longer than poor results due to rushing the job. Tile is a messy job and the contractors did a nice job cleaning up each night. Not a single spot on the new floor that looks suspect. Perfect tile pattern and finish."

"Lisa is a genius! With creativity and precision, she maximized every nook and cranny of our tiny 1906 cottage and brought it into the 21st century, while maintaining its original charm and character. Our "new" home is so much more functional now, and a delight to live and work in. Lisa took the lead on our projects (kitchen, bathroom, basement), but Adam is equally savvy. Both are fantastic listeners, brainstormers, collaborators, total professionals and all-around lovely human beings. We highly recommend Christie Architecture, and look forward to working with them again in the future!"

"You need to stop and read this review. You are going to read some amazing things about this man, his crew and the work he performed. I got several bids and chose Paul. He wasn't the highest or lowest, but the one I felt most comfortable with. I tried to be prepared with architect drawings, structural engineering reports, fixtures picked out, etc. I thought I was on top of it. Paul started the work and everything was going fine until the world came crashing down. My kidneys quit working. I was in a coma for five days, in the hospital for a month and in recovery for almost three months. This happened shortly after Paul started work on my project. Now I do believe many contractors would have walked away or at least asked to put the work on hold until a later date. Not Paul. He went on with the work as if nothing at all was wrong. If you have ever done a remodel, you know there are a cazillion items that need to be discussed and dealt with and so many decisions to be made. Paul was trying to figure this out with me barely able to assist him at all. It was a most difficult ordeal for him to try and work and get information from me as to what I wanted. He was always checking to see how I was doing health wise while also trying to make sure my remodel would be as perfect and as beautiful as I was hoping it would be. Paul and his crew were so kind, so patient and took it upon themselves to make sure that the work they did was something they would be proud to have in their own homes. The few times I was able to stop by my house to see how the work was going, his crew would stop what they were doing to help me get into the house, set up place for me sit as they showed me what they had done or what the were working on or to ask questions as to how I wanted something to look or where I wanted it placed. In the end, thanks to Paul and his crew, my place looks great, better then great. Paul said after I was feeling better, he was going to take some photos and place them on his website. I hope he does so you can all see the beautiful work that they accomplished--especially my bathroom, which is a work of art. There are many great contractors here in Portland, but not all that many that have the kind of compassion, caring and heart of Paul Cottle and his crew."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Bend, OR

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
