"If you need to replace your underground oil tank, then you're freaking out about the expense and possible catastrophic complications.   So do yourself a favor and call Willard.    This wonderful family company makes everything easy.

Our very positive experience started with the initial visit by Josh.    Then company owner Billy Willard answered all our many questions.   Considering the options, we decided to purchase a Roth tank.    Not just more compact than other brands, it also has a 30-year warranty.   Willard is the only company in Virginia certified to install Roths.

Our work was scheduled quickly.    Willard called Miss Utility and also our county -- we didn't have to do a thing.   The Roth tank fit neatly into our garage and Billy and his crew took great care with every detail of its complicated installation.    The removal of our underground tank went really well too, even though the tank turned out to be quite deep.    Frank and Josh worked very carefully to expose but not damage the old tank, and to transfer oil into the new tank.    Then the old tank was prepared so the residual oil could be pumped for recycling.    We hadn't even realized this step would take place, because Willard had made all the arrangements.   Next the tank was lifted and soil samples were taken.      Then, using a truckload of fill Willard supplied as well as the excavated soil, the enormous hole was filled, carefully graded and sown with grass seed.

You can imagine how many heavy vehicles were in motion to accomplish all this, yet there was not the slightest damage to our fence, landscaping, driveway or house.

Meanwhile, Tim was connecting the new Roth tank to our furnace, working with ingenuity around the maze of ducting. pipes and wires in our basement.   He wasn't satisfied until he was sure the connection was perfect.

We thought the entire crew was awesome, and that opinion was validated when the county fire inspector approved everything they'd done.   The Willards and Josh Delaney were not just expert, they were really friendly and considerate.    It was a pleasure to have them around,  They turned what had been a huge nightmare into a perfectly executed solution.

"RK Boswell and Septic and Excavating is an awesome company. The only reason we did not hire them is because we did not have a septic pump we have an electric pump. We are new to living in a rural area and was not sure what we had. They came out, look over our system and told us exactly what we could do at no cost. Their customer service is awesome. If someone does this for us without securing a contract, I think you can trust them with the septic projects that you have."

"Below is the portion of the email sent to me by Waterproofing Inc. explaining what work they would do and the cost: "Steve suggests waterproofing you entire front wall (20 feet) and installing one sump pump. The price would be $2400. Here is what he would do: Remove concrete about 18 inches wide depending on how wide the footing is. Excavate trench starting at 11 inches deep graded to 18 inches at sump well. Install gravel bed 2 inches in trench. Install plastic plate (Miradrain) across footer and up 18 inches. Install 4-inch perforated flexible ADS drain pipe. Fill in with gravel. Excavate sump well hole 22 inches wide and 36 inches deep. Install 5-inch gravel bed in sump well hole. Install plastic sump well (18 inches wide and 30 inches deep. Install 1/2 Horsepower Zoeller sump pump in sump well. Bolt down lid on well. Run discharge line out wall far enough so water does not recirculate, up to a maximum of 10 feet. Repour concrete to original thickness up to 3 inches. All debris is removed from house and the floor is broom swept. Lifetime guarantee against water in contracted area and a five year warranty on sump pump." I did not hire Waterproofing Inc. because out of the three estimates I received for the above work, Waterproofing Inc. was the most expensive on this particular occasion."

"I have nothing but great things to say about Honey Cove Lawn and Landscape and the owner Brandon Turner. He was extremely honest about everything throughout the entire process, and boy oh boy did we have issues. His prices were spot on for our budget and there was absolutely no pressure or upsell, which was VERY refreshing. Unlike many of his competitors, he was willing to use materials that I supplied and despite all the problems (None of them caused by him), the project turned out awesome, well above my expectations.

So the details: We lived in a Townhouse and were getting ready to move. The place was literally only 1 year old, but despite its youth had a host of issues. One of those issues was the fact that the backyard was always soft and had mildew and mold growing on it. Of course being a Townhouse, the yard was small, but it prevented us from using it and enjoying the outside. Our particular lot backed up to a downward slope into woods, the builder built a 12? retaining wall so our yard was level, and then dropped off  (it was fenced) It?s hard to explain, but not too important.

So we were moving and planning on renting the place. Having mildew in the backyard was a real hit with potential renters, so we decided to have a patio installed using paver stones. We considered doing it ourselves, but time was of the essence, so we decided to farm it out. I honestly cannot remember how I found Brandon, but I?m glad I did.

So we set up a time for him to come out so we could discuss the project. First impressions are of course paramount, and Brandon was the consummate professional.  As I stated before, there was never a hint of pressure for me to spend more money than I really needed to. He understood what we wanted, and agreed to wait for me to find some used paver stones on Craig?s List. In the end, he ended up supplying the stones for less than I was seeing on Craig?s List, but this was all my decision. Now to the issues:

So the first day was excavation. When the crew dug in, they found that the builder had cut so many corners, that all of my neighbors? downspouts were draining into my yard, under my yard, with no proper drainage (gravel, sand, spout over the side of the retaining wall, etc?). So needless to say, we found why we were having the mildew issues. Now it would have been very easy for Brandon to pay no attention to this issue and build the patio on top of the mud, collect his money and move on, but he didn?t. Despite the fact that he would have to sit and wait at work stoppage until the builder fixed the issue (over two weeks), Brandon informed me of the issue. He explained to me the problem, to most likely mitigation, as well the risk of simply moving ahead.

To make a long story shorter, the builder finally fixed the issue, and Brandon was able to finish the patio, all within my budget, and it looks great! We hired him again to do the landscaping around the patio which just made it look even better.

Bottom-line, Honey Cove Lawn and Landscape offered us an honest price, and honest assessment, and an awesome finished product. I would have no issues recommending Brandon for any project you have, he will do a great job."

FAQs for excavation projects in Port Tobacco, MD

Depth depends on the type of installation and the regulations in your area. Water supply lines typically require 24 inches, while drainage pipes are often installed 36 inches below grade. For most general projects, a depth of 12 to 24 inches and a width of about eight inches is sufficient. Sticking to these specs keeps your utilities safe, code-compliant, and easier to maintain later.

When you need to run utilities underground, you’ve got two main options: boring or trenching. Boring employs directional drilling to install utilities without exposing a continuous channel, while trenching requires excavating an open channel to place utilities securely. Directional drilling preserves landscape integrity, whereas trenching provides direct access for installation, albeit with greater surface disruption. This clear comparison helps you select the method best suited to your project.

Plan on 12 hours to dig 100 linear feet when the soil is cooperative and you can work continuously. This timeframe applies when work is performed consistently and methodically. Factors such as rocky soil, tree roots, obstructions, and frozen ground increase the overall duration, demanding extra planning and effort. Comprehensive operational planning ensures that every challenge is managed efficiently and the project is completed on schedule.

If you want your yard to look untouched, laying fresh sod over the trench is the quickest fix. New sod needs 30 to 45 days to root and blend with the rest of your lawn. A local sod pro can provide you with a firm timeline and tips to ensure the grass takes hold and maintains your curb appeal.
