"We had a traditional brick woodburning fireplace with elevated hearth and gas logs. For a remodel, we wanted to demo the hearth, lower the firebox to near floor level, install a new efficient gas insert, repair and seal chimney, add metal crown and cap. I went to four contractors with specs and request for proposal. Chimney Doctor and David were responsive, timely, thorough and accurate with a detailed proposal, worked with me on design, met schedule commitments, professional and friendly, good crews, quality job for a fair price. What more can you ask? Job well done."

"We could not get our gas log fireplace to stay on. Germantown Fireplace came when they said they would and quickly assessed the problem...(it was just dirty) and said that's usually what causes our problem. He moved very fast which was good, but was not terribly friendly and was eager to move on to the next call. We appreciated the quick response and reasonable price. Interactive manner could have been better on the part of the serviceman."

"I contacted Paul's Tile for an estimate on sunroom tile, a hall/guest bath and master bath remodel after reading reviews on Angie's list.  We fully intended to do the sunroom and hall bath, then wait for the master.  Cash Edinger arrived at my house (vacant, as we had just purchased) and ended up also providing estimates on granite countertops, too.  After their quick, efficient, high quality work in both the sunroom and the hall bathroom, we decided to go ahead and remodel the master bathroom prior to moving in.
Throughout the process Cash has been responsive, helpful and professional, and has been on site daily to follow progress.  We knew the house had been neglected by the previous owners (was a foreclosure) and Cash's crew discovered extensive termite damage in the bathroom, but immediately changed course, fixed that damaged wood, and still finished the bathroom on time.
Cash knew we wanted to move into the house as soon as possible, so rearranged his schedule to accommodate that, and moved up our master bath remodel.

"I had an idea for a deck and searched Angie's List and talked to several contractors.  Cheryl came out to meet and discuss the project within 24 hours.  She was easy to communicate with and with her extensive experience in the field, she was able to envision my new deck with me.  We looked at photos on the web, drawings my husband had done and talked about the design until we had a great plan.  She priced the project with a detailed bid and emailed it within the week.  A few tweaks to the materials list and the order was placed.  Within 4 weeks, destruction of the old deck was complete and new foundation was laid.  The deck team (Lynn and Adolpho) were amazing.  They were there on time, as scheduled each day.  The professionalism and speed with which they worked was impressive.  They were patient with me as I would ask questions and collaborate on small design decisions.  Once the deck was laid, Michael the stone mason arrived with his team.  He asked all the right questions about the design, size and functionality I wanted for the fireplace.  I chose the stone (Barden Stone was incredibly helpful) and it was there for construction.  Michael laid a very deep footing for the fireplace since it's chimney had to extend beyond the roof of covered deck.  He was precise and an artist.  He chose the best stones for certain parts of the fireplace and hearth.  We installed a cast iron swing arm for a tea pot inside the firebox.  He created a ash dump and door in the back of the fireplace for easy cleaning.  We created a firewood storage box to the side of the fireplace so I never have to get wet getting wood.  Michael also did an amazing job on tiers of steps from the new deck to the lawn, as well as a stone retaining wall in another part of the yard.  Lynn and Adolpho returned to install a custom cedar mantel.  Electrician had to redo some wiring so it would be routed under the deck rather than run across the beam (didn't look good).  The lights, fan and speakers were installed.  Trim work was finished and finally a copper rain chain with the gutter to finish the project.
Cheryl was on site regularly and available by phone every time I called.  The collaboration was a joy and I am looking for other projects so Cheryl and team can come back.  I welcome phone calls or emails re: this reference.  I'll post pictures, but have told Cheryl it's fine to bring serious clients over for a look and personal reference.  The project cost more than the initial bid and took longer than we initially thought, but it's because I had the freedom (and Cheryl as an expert) to add/change materials and scope of project as needed.  I love my fireplace and deck.  It's one of the best I've ever seen.

"Everything went well. Crew worked and finished the same day. Lady owner is attentive to details and is all about satisfying the customer. They are top notch. I am a single woman and did not want my price to be over inflated. This project was within my budget, and they did a fantastic job. You receive a contract detailing all the work and the prices. There are NO surprises at the end of the job as it regards pricing. Crew was respectful of my property and they used the magnet to get remove all the nails off the roof, driveway and grass. Not one shingle, piece of wood, or debris was left on my property after the job was completed. All work comes with a written guarantee. It doesn't get any better than that!"

FAQs for fireplace and wood stove service projects in Arlington, TN

Start with a professional inspection. If damage is limited to a few bricks or the crown, a targeted repair helps keep costs and disruption to a minimum. Severe leaning, widespread mortar failure, or major fire damage usually signals it’s time for a complete teardown and rebuild. Your contractor will outline both price tags, but remember that rebuilding a failing stack is often cheaper than repeated patch jobs and the water leaks or fire hazards they allow.

Cracks provide water with an easy path into the masonry, weakening the bricks and mortar and increasing the risk of collapse or fire. Gaps can also let hot gases and sparks escape into attic spaces. Call a chimney pro as soon as you see cracking so they can seal small joints or recommend a larger rebuild before minor damage turns into a costly emergency.

Smoke rolling back into the room often indicates a blocked flue, a broken damper, or a drafting issue. Have a sweep inspect the damper, flue liner, and any obstructions right away. Most fixes involve clearing debris, repairing the liner, or adjusting the damper so the fireplace pulls air correctly. Don’t light another fire until a professional pinpoints the cause and confirms your system is venting safely.

Most policies cover chimney repairs caused by a sudden, covered event, such as lightning, a fallen tree, or a house fire. They won’t cover damage that stems from neglected maintenance or everyday wear. Review your policy or contact your agent before scheduling work to determine what documentation your insurer requires and what costs you will be responsible for.

Component life spans vary. Clay tile or cast-in-place liners last close to 50 years, while stainless-steel liners last 15 to 20 years. Mortar requires attention every 25 to 30 years, while crowns last 50 to 75 years. Use these numbers as a maintenance roadmap: schedule regular inspections, budget for future upgrades, and replace parts before age-related cracks develop into more significant problems.
