"The overall job went well. The (reasonable) estimate was performed weeks in advance of work. The work required 2 days. Scheduling was agreed on, & Manny confirmed a few days before the job. Manny power washed himself, but had a co-assistant on the paint project. Communications, punctuality, and work progress was very good. The finished job met my expectations. I only wish extra paint could’ve been left for touchups; but Manny did provide me with purchase info having brand/color of sealant used. A 3 yr warranty was also provided with receipt so that’s awesome. I’ve even obtained another estimate for possible painting of my siding."

"The work was just great and Four Seasons did not go over budget. Everything was of a very high quality. Ken's crew is really hard working. They would often arrive before daylight -- Ken, too -- and work until after dark. They were always willing to address any concerns I had. Everything promised in the contract was done. The quality was great. They are very careful workers. The finish was very impressive. The work included clearing the space, building the foundation and cement floor, constructing the garage, and building a cement driveway."

"We used the owner to build a fence around our large backyard before and since we were so satisfied with his and his team's work, it was a natural choice for us to have him build our deck as well. Caleb, Mike and team were as expected very easy to communicate with, punctual and open in communication, always accessible to us for questions and of course they did an outstanding job building our new structure! We have received many, many compliments from everybody passing by on our new deck. The team build the upper deck as a free standing deck according to code, they added engineered wood decking, railing and the stairs going down. They also removed our dining room window and replaced it with a French door. We have a brick exterior which made it a bit more challenging to replace our window but Mike and team had no issue completing 90% of the demolition and door install within one day, leaving us with a closed off house at the end of the day. All dry wall work inside the house, including fixing the floors inside the house was completed by the team in a very professional manner. An external dry wall gut was hired to ensure quality and rapid work. The team also did not hesitate to complete a small change in the middle of the project with no hassle and at no extra cost. The team was very accommodative to any sort of feedback or requests. The project was completed within the timeframe promised (2 weeks). The materials used are of high quality. We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this project and will not hesitate to call Better Build Northwest again for our future projects! Thanks so much again Caleb, Mike and team for the great work!"

"The work was accomplished quickly, quietly and with a craftsmanship which is unexpected in today's market. The look of the stairs is simple, classic and very attractive, and structurally the work is absolutely solid and without a tremble or creaking underfoot. Impossible to imagine how anybody at any price could do better work. Mr. Painter is a master builder who produces exceptional work at a very reasonable price no matter if the job is large or small. We unreservedly recommend him."

"I originally hired Daniel to perform a first floor kitchen remodel which included opening up the first floor with a more open concept floor plan. And adding a kitchen island. The project went smoothly and I was so taken by the final look that I had him come back to update three bathrooms, as well as, a complete remodel the basement. The house now has a more contemporary/ modern appearance and I receive compliments often. His price points for the individual projects were fair. I found him to be not as pricey as some and a bit higher than others. The workmen were polite, cleaned up daily before leaving and very repectful of my wishes. If I had to list a con it would be that one or two of the projects were not completed on schedule. Each being off by about a week. Overall, I would hire him again and have referred him to several friends and family members."

FAQs for shelter or outbuilding building service projects in Alexandria, VA

A bomb shelter is an abode built to withstand disaster. Bomb shelters may refer to a space or bunker that can protect inhabitants through a hypothetical nuclear attack, apocalypse, or any other massive crisis. People usually build bomb shelters underground and stock them to live there a few days to a month at a time. Doomsday bunkers accommodate long-term living rather than just through a short crisis.

Builders construct bomb shelters with reinforced steel, box culvert, concrete, or other durable materials (but many professionals do not recommend shipping containers, as they’re not designed to live underground. If building underground, you’ll first have to excavate land before building the actual structure. You’ll have to implement air and water filtration systems, septic systems, and power supply.

It takes a lot of experience to safely and legally construct a bomb shelter, not to mention make sure it’s fit to live in for extended periods of time. It’s best to talk to a residential structural engineer near you for proper guidance.

The current standard filtration systems require filtering both air and water. For air, you’ll want an NBC filter system, which both domestic and international producers make. NBC stands for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical, which filters out all three. If you’re only building your shelter for natural disasters, chemical attacks, and biological attacks, you may opt for the less expensive HEPA filter system.

Water filtration requires the same level of care. You’ll likely want to have a large water storage capacity to survive short-term disasters. For long-term living, you’ll want to have a water filtration system.

Rising S bunker prices depend on the size, ranging anywhere from $20,000 to $9 million. Their least expensive model is 96 square feet while their most expensive model has a gym, swimming pool, hot tub, and bowling alley.

  • Mini: $45,500

  • Standard Bomb Shelter: $67,500–$109,500

  • Silver Leaf: $140,000–$182,500

  • Admiral: $180,000–$500,000

  • Xtreme: $450,000–$780,000

  • Xtreme Bunker Complex: $840,000–$1,830,000

  • Luxury Series: $3,800,000–$9,600,000

You almost always need a permit to build a bunker on land with any type of public utilities running through it. You’ll want to check with your local building code enforcement agency to see if this is the case for your area.

Because you’re building a structural component that often requires electricity, water, and sewage services, you’ll need to apply for permits to attach these utilities to your new property. However, off-grid-only units in rural areas may not need all or any of the permitting you’d normally find in more urban settings.

To survive a nuclear blast, you’ll need to have your bunker at least three feet underground. However, it’s usually advisable to put it further underground. To survive a close strike, you’ll want to have the bunker at least 10 feet down and with five-foot thick reinforced concrete. However, knowing exactly how deep to build depends on the size of the blast you’re trying to avoid. Most bunkers don’t need to be more than 5 feet below the ground.
