"Hired him to grind some relatively small brush stumps and then roto-till the area to break-up the other roots and make the soil ready to plant replacement foliage. He quoted $600 to $800 and said it would take a good portion of a day. He did grind the stumps but got **finished** quicker than I expected, said that the roto-tilling was really hard, and that he was charging $900. I should have called him out on this, but he had brought his young (approx. 10 or 11 year old) son with him on the job; so I did not want to embarrass him. Now, after planting some new scrubs in the area he worked, I am realizing that the roto-tilling being **really hard** actually meant **it was really hard, so I just did not do it**. There are roots on the surface of the area completely intact, and a few inches under the surface some roots 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter, as well as rocks and large terra-cotta pots pieces that I am having to dig out by hand. I even had to buy a special shovel that could cut through roots to be able to plant anything. Bottom line - did not do all the work he contracted to do and charged more than what he originally quoted to actually do everything including the work he clearly did not do."
