"I was extremely satisfied with the professional conduct of this job. I had carefully designed the structure of the shed. It was important that all the dimensions of the slab be met accurately and that the 6 posts be placed precisely and perfectly vertical. They were. Working with Jaime was very satisfying as we had numerous discussions about details as the job progressed. I provided some large salvage planks from the old shed that could be used to build forms, and he provided several significant suggestions to improve the end result. The slab was on a slight slope. He provided much deeper concrete on the downhill side to anchor the slab and resist underwash. He provided a large footer under each post before the main concrete pour, because the posts were going to carry the entire weight of the roof. I would not have thought to do that. This is the value of hiring an experienced contractor. The shed has been completed and the first delivery of sawdust has been made. The slabs stood up to the significant weight of the delivery truck as can be seen in my pictures."

"We had some concrete steps that were in very bad shape and needed to be replaced. Michael came to look at the site not long after I contacted him; then, because it was a smaller job, his team fit us into their schedule within a week. They turned up in the morning and by the end of the day the old steps were destroyed and the new steps had been framed, poured, reinforced, and set - we were walking on them the next day. Between that, the reasonable price, and the 5-year guarantee, I was very happy with the service and would definitely hire them again."

"Patrick and his team were great! We had to get new concrete added in our backyard and they were able to start right away, did a wonderful job and got it done quickly. This is the second time we have worked with Capitol Hill Masonry and had great experiences both times."

"Patrick, Myles, and their crew appropriately identified the solution to a water seepage problem into the below grade laundry room of my Capitol Hill home. I also had a few other odds and ends needs: repairing back steps and repointing a wall in the garage. The quality of my discussion with Patrick persuaded me that he knew what was necessary to actually fix the underlying problems vs provide me with temporary fixes. The work proceeded very efficiently. Patrick provided daily updates and photos, and consulted with me at each step along the way. The crew work intensively for three straight days and completed each of the elements of the job. The quality of the masonry work was high and they were careful to clean up thoroughly. All in all, it was a very positive experience. I will use Capitol Hill Masonry for future work and highly recommend Capitol Hill Masonry to others."

"The work was done well overall, but I had to remove some large concrete pieces from the sloping areas around the edges. The original diggers had buried these close to the surface, which would have made landscaping impossible. This was not Jerry's fault, as they did not follow his instructions to break these up, and add them to the substrate rock under the patio base. There were delays due to the very bad weather, out of his control, but the re-scheduling needs could have been communicated better, in my opinion."

"Steve Norfolk and his crew dug down to the footing and applied the waterproof material a section at a time.  The original plan was to dig the entire area first and then apply the waterproof material all at the same time.  However daily torrential rains turned the area into a sea of mud, so he decided to do it a section at a time to minimize problems associated with the rain.  He had to break up a concrete slab (porch) for 1/2 the front, and approximately 25 feet of driveway next to the house.  Progress was slow due to the rain and mud, but Steve steadfastly pursued the completion of the job despite the setbacks.  Although justifiably discouraged by the rain and lack of progress, he exhibited a positive "can do" attitude and kept at it.  The finished product was professionally done.  Backfill and all concrete were properly completed, and grass seed applied.  Steve is a conscientious professional who knows his business and can be relied upon to do the work he says he will accomplish.  I would use him again in a heartbeat.

"The response time of this company is phenomenal along with the work! They answered my questions promptly & once work began, they kept me updated on the findings that were underground during excavation of the asphalt to ensure my driveway was smooth as possible (as I had a slope) over exceeding my expectations! I highly recommend this family business to everyone. They are truly professional hard workers."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Anacostia, DC

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
