"David was open and honest about everything he was doing. I had to work, so I was not here when he did the work, but he sent me emails with photos of everything he did. Before the job, he shared with me everything he was going to do...step by step. This is not a cheap project, and he was honest from the beginning. After the job was complete, he cleaned up, and also showed me everything he did after I was home from work. He was very efficient, and I highly recommend him!"

"Kevin and his son did an excellent job. They went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with results! They added an extra little water feature for my rain chain run off knowing how much I want to be able to keep it. We will definitely work with them again! "

Small jobs welcome

"I had a relatively small project involving gravel delivery, and in the course of discussion they learned I was needing to pick up railroad ties. They offered to save me the trouble by picking up and delivering the ties along with the gravel. I consider this extremely excellent customer service, especially considering the small nature of the service request! In addition, they came in at a far lower price than competitors - (& they provided the convenience of picking up the railroad ties!) Caleb, who made the delivery was especially helpful and professional! If I have any other landscaping need, I will be sure to go to them, and only them!"

"Ricardo and his team did an amazing job. We are very happy with the results. They quoted a fair price and made wonderful suggestions that made our space an oasis. We will hire him and his team again in the future. We have referred him to multiple other people. "

"Rick was on time for every appointment and did an excellent job. His 40+ years of experience in the Waynesville/Asheville area played a huge role in every plant and landscaping material choice he recommended (some I would have never thought of), and the final product was more than I could have ever imagined. He took into account some of the recommendations that we had, crafted them into a much better design, and talked us out of a few that would not have worked. I recommend Advanced Landscaping for all of your landscape needs. His company will always have follow-on work with us, as we have many more projects planned. Excellent to work with, personable, totally professional, an industry expert, and more. A++"

"Six years ago VanWyck LanDesign did a wonderful job for us. They removed our ghastly cement walkway and replaced it with cobblestone pavers. The recommended fill between pavers was "EASYJoint." Since installation, we've needed repair services twice. The first time, I was surprised by the bill but paid it in full because the work was good. The second time, I felt the bill was a serious overcharge. Just a two-man crew was needed. Instead, a three-man crew was sent. After I complained about this, I was told "We only have a three-man crew." The team also arrived with just one bucket of replacement EASYJoint sand. When I saw that many areas remained to be treated, a crew member left to purchase a second bucket (this required an additional 1/2 hour of labor time). VanWyck LanDesign has changed, as have so many other things these days. I'm so terribly disappointed in David's response to my concerns."

"We have 16 acres of beautiful and hilly property that was a mix of fine hardwood trees, plus maple, white pine, dogwood, etc. of all different ages. It also was overrun with Virginia pine, unbelievable vines, wild roses, privet, poison ivy and all the rest. Carrie and her crew did a first class job maneuvering around the trees we wanted to save, and clearing out the rest. The truth is I couldn’t recommend them highly enough – good people, good workers, and good service !"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Black Mountain, NC

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
