"The coordination between the Driveway Lady and her partner/husband was not good. It felt like she was making promises and he was trying to cut corners. He tried to skimp on landscape fabric and on rolling (compacting) the stone until I insisted otherwise. I discovered after they left that his men had dumped about a ton of our old gravel base in the arborvitae bushes that line the far end of our long driveway. They also spread the stone unevenly, so that now, just a month later, weeds are coming up in some spots. While I personally like these people, I would not recommend them."

"George was an absolute pleasure to work with. We wanted our driveway to be installed right after snow melted, and he was very responsive as we traded phone calls about scheduling. He was out to do the job the very first day it was possible, and he and his team did a terrific job. Our driveway had a couple of areas where the grading was both important and tricky, and George and his team carefully tested the area with water to make sure everything was flowing correctly. Terrific job--highly recommended."

"I put this work off for a lot of years and one of the reasons was that I was afraid of getting lousy concrete work. After it was poured, these guys worked on the sidewalks and the apron for at least five hours. My neighbors can't believe how great the sidewalks look! DIO Construction understood exactly what I wanted for the driveway and the wall and all of that work turned out great too! DIO Construction is very professional. I highly recommend them."

"Wonderfully. Cedar Run was recommended by the paver company to correct problems with initial installation, and they really knew their stuff. Nice, conscientious and responsive as well. They even made an extra trip to later seal areas that had had to have stains removed."

"Barbara Nesbitt was one of several landscaping contracters we contacted to assess, recommend, design and quote for a complete renovation of the landscaping in front of our home. (We had a 30-ish year old landscape with lots of DIY plantings and a TON of overgrowth and weeds from our inability to keep up with the maintenance).

To start off right, Barbara was straighforward with me about her availability, turnaround, and charge for designing the solution. So far so good... as I'd already been burned by several contractors who came for a visit, promised a response and quote, and then either didn't return my calls or missed their committed dates on a response.

Barbara spent over an hour with me reviewing some of her previous work in photos, walking around my property, discussing my requirements and priorities, and sharing some of her ideas. I was very concerned about creating a low-maintenance landscape (because I have very little free time for yard work), and she was aware of and proactive about considering deer resistance. She was up front and clear about her labor charges (for the team, by the day) and I agreed to pay her reasonable design fee (which would be credited to the job if I went with her for the work) and waited the agreed time for her design to emerge.

When Barbara returned as scheduled, she came with expert drawings, detailed information about deer-resistant plants, a detailed quote (which I found extremely reasonable on the plant materials plus the aforementioned labor) and an open mind. My 73-year-old mother (an experienced home-builder and home gardener) put her through a grilling you wouldn't believe, and Barbara passed muster with flying colors. Barbara's design was realistic and true to my requirements re: color, formality vs. informality, maintenance needs, and deer resistance. It was the most expensive design I'd received, but I saw clear value in it vs. the others who had gotten as far as drafting a design.

We made a few minor tweaks to the design, gave her a deposit check, and set a date to get rolling (about 10 days later).

Barbara's team (always including her and 5-6 men) arrived promptly each of the 3 days of the renovation and worked tirelessly for a full day each day. They dug, hoed, chopped, raked, and anything else you can think of to do with a garden/landscaping. They planted two trees, about 20 shrubs, about 15 perennials, and 200 bulbs, and they strategically placed 5 tons of boulders, including creating a lovely dry-fit boulder wall at the bottom of my hill meeting my driveway. The stones were always placed with quarrystone for drainage. They also brought in and placed three yards of quarry stone for the foundation under my new shed. Soil was amended for each plant. They brought in and spread nine yards of triple hardwood mulch, and spread Preen.

I was then and now remain completely thrilled with the results the following spring/summer. Given the starting point, Barbara and her team worked miracles. I now gladly bring a member of her team back every six weeks or so to do pruning and basic maintenance on the landscaping - a very reasonable expense (about 2 hours @$30/hr every 6 weeks or so) to keep the beauty maintained.

Barbara Nesbitt was and is a delight to work with, her fees were completely reasonable for the quality and quantity of work done and plants supplied, and we drive into our driveway smiling to look at the results every night after work. My only regret is not doing this sooner."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Bryn Mawr, PA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
