"Jim was very prompt and seemed responsive. He is a nice guy who works hard.  He started the work when he said he would and kept it on schedule in spite of some difficult weather.   His brother worked with him the first few days, but after that he did all of the work himself. 
Unfortunately, the work does not look as professional as I had hoped.  Some of the wood is not cut straight, edges are not smooth, and there are many gaps between boards. 
As the work got toward completion I told him of my concern that the workmanship was not good.  Jim said he would get it all fixed up at the end.  He filled some gaps with wood filler and sanded them, but did not finish due to rain.  The filled and sanded joints still look sloppy.  Unfortunately, these joints are right in front of the kitchen window, where we see them all the time.
Jim said he has a lifetime guarantee on his work and will come back to finish this up.  I hope he will.
Another builder told me that the structural work on the deck is very good, even "overbuilt," which I was glad to hear.

Update: Jim came back and relaid some of the boards on the deck and it looks much better! I would definitely hire him again.

Update:  The second summer after Jim built the deck I stained it myself, so I got a close look at the workmanship. Many boards were split by nailing, decking is not spaced uniformly, and  joints are not well fitted. "

     I hired Jerry of Lasting Creations, LLC to fix some structure issues that had resulted form years of settling. The home is located close to the beach. Years of salt air etc. had caused stress cracks on the front corners of the home. Jerry completely chipped back the brittle cracked stucco and reenforced it with hydrolic cement to take care of the structure cracks.  He re-stuccoed the front of the home, put coins which are the square raised patterns on the corners, four in all. Around the windows he built solid concrete bands, with keys, which are diamond shaped accent pieces at the top of each window, as well as the top of the garage. I am very pleased
with the results! Jerry is a hard working independent business owner, don't let the tattoos fool you. Jerry is a man of integrity. I gave him a deposit check approximately a month and a  half before the job was started. He held the check until the day he physically started the job. He showed up on time, he preformed to the letter of our contract. Jerry takes pride in his craft. He may not be your cheapest bid....But keep in mind sometimes the cheap comes out expensive, especially if you have to rehire someone to come and fix shotty workmanship. I would definitely hire Jerry of Lasting Creations LLC. again in the future.

"Second time I've used Jerry and his work is the best available.? The work was performed while I was away and when I returned I could not have been more pleased.? The previous owner had a double width window replaced and whoever installed it really didn't do anything about the fact that it was too wide for the framing.? Consequently they had nailed some strips to the siding and the window causing them to bow around the side of the window.? Where the gaps formed they filled in with up to 3/8" of caulking. Not only unsightly, the window was not secure or sealed.? When I saw the finished product it was completely repaired. Everything was square and fit tightly to the adjoining parts.? Additionally a crisp paint job added the finishing touch.? Jerry doesn't cut corners and will do what it takes to get the job done right."
