"Before Ben could build our deck,  he had to first remove a very sub par deck, which would have never passed code even when new, and put in one 50% bigger and 110% safer and more beautiful, than I had even expected. Because, my husband and I both have physical limitations, we really relied on Ben to help make this deck safe <em>and</em> good looking. He helped us pick the best materials (composite) and worked within our budget to get us the things we wanted at the best price.   <br /> I have never seen anyone take such pride in their work, and care in the job that they do. If, anything sums up the quality of my deck, it is my one simple step, going from the house to the deck, A small detail, but, an important one for my husband is a man with balance issues. Ben not only made this step, as an add on after I asked him if he could,  he made it look high end. With all the same attention to detail as the rest of the deck. <br /> He stuck as close to his quote as possible through the changes I tossed his way. I can tell you that his pricing was the best of 4 quotes that we'd gotten. (One quoted us a price  $7,000 over his for the same requested deck.) He is honest, fair, and reliable. His work speaks for it's self, and I'd be happy to show you my deck, anytime. <br />  As for clean up, well, I don't think, I have even found a left over nail or screw in the grass. <br />"

"<p>Bruce Reed, owner of BDR Construction, did an awesome job on our new 2 car garage!  Bruce is the real deal!  He is very professional, prompt, courteous & gets the job done!  We are very pleased & impressed with our new garage.  The roof flows so nicely with the existing 1.5 car garage that it is now attached in front of.  </p> <p>Half way through the project I decided another window was needed in the garage to provide more light & help avoid the feeling of a long tunnel.  Bruce took the news in stride and agreed it was a good idea.  He asked me to pick out the window I wanted & said he would get it installed.  He had already put up the wood frame on that side of the garage but didn't even flinch with my request.  He did a terrific job of cutting & framing in the extra window with no complaints.  </p> <p>The month of June was plagued with a lot of rain but Bruce didn't let that keep him away from the project.  He worked as much as he could despite the weather.  On days of torrential rain of course it was impossible until the roof was on the structure.  </p> <p>I highly recommend Bruce Reed of BDR Construction to anyone thinking of adding an addition, remodeling or building a garage.  </p> <p>Thank you Bruce! You're terrific!  If we decide on another project in the future we will call you!</p> <p>Carol D Cornell</p> <p><br /></p> <p><br /></p> <br />"

"I cannot speak highly enough of Tom and Brad Green of Colonial Restorations. We have lived in our antique house for 16 years now, and like most old homes, some of its previous repairs were good, some not so good. Tom Green worked on this house for its previous owners, and his work was, by far, the best in the house. So, we continued to use Colonial - Tom, then Tom and Brad - as we learned the ropes about caring for an old house - our first house, old or new. Over the years, they have replaced sills and posts and beams, and rebuilt parts of our loose stone foundation. Most recently, they replaced the last original posts in our basement, (one of which was a tree trunk still with bark on it), including pouring new custom footings, in advance of our finally cementing the dirt floor. The work here is never easy - nothing is level, nothing is square - but the Greens' end result has always been beautiful - strong and made to last. Their prices are fair and without hidden costs....maybe not the lowest bid you might get, but you know it's a real bid that they will stand behind. They triage projects for us, giving us an idea of what other items will likely need attention in the next few years. We're not done with this house yet....we've never won the lottery, and there's always another repair..... and plan to use them again soon. I feel confident knowing that the next owners of this house, whoever they might be, will see the quality of the work and know that we cared enough to have the right people help us with the ongoing repair and maintenance of a 275+ year old house. I am a real person, a real customer, with no ties to the company, and was more than happy to write this review."

"I have an old farmhouse.  I did receive a couple of quotes, but I think most came by, looked at the roof, and decided that they would prefer to work on a more straightforward project.  Robert stuck with me.  We started with a quote for shingles, because everyone else told me a metal roof would be 3x the cost of shingles.  When I mentioned that we would prefer a metal roof, Robert gave me an estimate that was surprisingly within reach.  He was also patient with me when choosing colors.  We did have a couple of delays, mostly because of weather, so it would be unfair to blame Robert and his crew for that.  In fact, he was able to work on our roof sooner than expected.  When Robert discovered problems underneath the old roof, he contacted me right away and he offered me practical solutions.  The quality of the work seems good, and slight imperfections may be due to the old structure of the roofs that they have to work with.  If my windows don't leak this winter and the snow falls off as we expect it to, then I will be able to speak to that better.  Robert and his crew were professional and great to work with.  They left the place in good shape every day.  I enjoyed working with Robert. <br />"

"We were very pleased with Green Age in all aspects of our project, from start to finish. The floors in our old Victorian home (1st floor), which at one point was a student rental, were in poor condition and consisted of several types and layers (laminate, tile, hardwood) that all needed to be removed down to the original boards. It was a nasty job but was completed quickly and efficiently, and nicely cleaned up afterward. A partial sub-floor was needed in some places and leveling across the 1st floor was a challenge in some places. Some of this was unexpected and they worked SATURDAY & SUNDAY in order to finish on schedule! Abe & crew did a great job with both prepping and installing the new hardwood floors - they look absolutely fabulous! We also greatly appreciated that we were able to leave several pieces of furniture in place, since we had no room to clear the 1st floor of furniture. They were able to move things around as the installation proceeded. Working with Abe & Green Age was a pleasure and we would definitely work with them again, as well as recommend them to anyone looking for construction/building services. Pleasant, clear communication, great results, on-time and willing to go above & beyond to deliver."

FAQs for garage building service projects in Burlington, VT

A well‑constructed, properly permitted detached garage adds between $12,000 and $36,000 to a home’s resale value. Buyers appreciate the secure parking, extra storage, and flexible workspace, so appraisers often bump the property’s value accordingly. The exact return depends on the garage’s size, finishes, and how well it matches the main house, but most homeowners see a strong ROI when the build meets local codes and passes inspection.

Yes—once it meets local building codes and you secure the proper permits, a detached garage can be converted into living space. Finishing the interior, adding climate control, and ensuring safe egress effectively increase your usable square footage, though it may not always count toward the official listing. Skipping permits can trigger fines and even force you to undo the work, so always clear plans with your city first.

Most homeowners policies cover a detached garage under the “other structures” provision, but coverage limits vary. Review your declarations page and ask your agent how much protection you have for separate structures. If the limit is lower than the garage’s replacement cost, you can raise it for a modest premium. Confirming the details now prevents headaches if you ever need to file a claim.
