"The computer technician, Tammy, was excellent.  He arrived on time and was very personable.  Our computer is several years old and has been running slow, so he cleaned it up for us.  He tried to show us how to perform some maintenance tasks on our own.
After he was finished, he had to call in to the main Geek Choice number to settle the bill.  When I spoke with the person on the phone from Geek Choice, I was astonished when they told me the bill was for $300, which included 2.5 hours service at $100 per hour and a $50 fee for home visit.  I informed her that I had ordered the first hour through Angie's List for $75 and that the home visit fee was waived.  She retrieved my information and charged me a balance of $135, to include the reduced hourly fee of $90 per hour.  So Angie's List saved me almost $100, which I totally appreciate.
I give the technician high marks but the company, Geek Choice, seems like just another corporation trying to make more money off the consumer than they should.  I'm glad I went through Angie's List.

"I purchased a big deal for 8 hours of electrical labor over 2 years prior to the service being performed. The delay was on my end due to personal reasons. They were gracious enough to honor the full value of the deal due to my circumstance. I asked them to work on three issues: a failed 3-way switch, an unsightly CATV wire running along the ceiling through 2 rooms of the house into a 3 season porch and installation of a new floodlight to the back yard. Each of the three issues had an unexpected variable pop up. They were able to diagnose the issue with the 3-way switch was related to a faulty wire in an outlet that was on the same circuit but in a different room. Once they were able to fix the issue with the outlet, they replaced the faulty switches so that the 3-way switch was operable once again. While I knew one outlet was out related to the switch, I forgot to mention it to them which would have been very helpful to them in diagnosing and resolving the issue even quicker. The next item they worked on was the CATV wire. They quickly determined that the wire needed to be routed through a different bay in the wall than the cable provider had punched through. They rerouted the wire and fished it through the basement rather than through a bay that would have required drilling through a structural beam to get into the garage. Since the main issue we had was the unsightly cords, Joe suggested that I move the cable box, outlet and CATV plates to the behind the TV where it all would be hidden. This was a great idea and was well worth extra time and expense. While moving the outlet to behind the TV rather than at the baseboard, they noticed the existing outlet was overloaded. They fixed that issue by turning the 2 outlet plate into a 4 outlet plate thereby bringing the outlet up to code. The last issue they tackled was adding an outside floodlight. We had an existing switch and 2-armed floodlight off of one corner of our screened in porch facing the yard and wanted to add another 2-armed floodlight on the opposite corner. I had initially wanted the second light run through the soffit cavity but Joe looked at it and noted that the structure of the porch would not lend itself to that. He gave me two options to choose from: I could use an existing outlet and have the light be a motion sensor light or I could run a PVC conduit pipe outside from the existing floodlight box to the new floodlight box. I went with option 2 and was very happy with the result. He took care to make sure the boxes were in the same spot in relation to the corner on either side of porch (they look perfectly symmetrical) and used a conduit expansion joint so that fluctuations in temperature will not damage the PVC tube. There was a disconnect on the date of the service - I thought it was for Tuesday 24th and he had it as Wednesday 25th. Thinking back, I think he said Tuesday the 25th, I focused on Tuesday and he focused on the 25th. While it didn't bother me, he and his assistant had what some may consider an unprofessional banter. He offered the advice that I switch out the outlets in the house due to age and how they were wired (back-stabbed vs screwed in). He mentioned that it was an easy homeowner repair if I had the time to do it safely and carefully. He provided an itemized invoice with all supplies listed which are included in the total service cost. I would certainly look to them for future electrical work."

"George and his helper Alex did a neat and professional job. This is the second time I used GMB and was thoroughly satisfied both times. The first job GMB did for me was wall mounting two flat screen televisions; a 55and quot; in my family room and a 24and quot; in my bedroom. They did a great job on both with no visible wires or outlets.

FAQs for home theater system or media center installation projects in Charlton-city, MA

For those on a budget, a home theater system can be installed for as little as $5,000. This simple setup, which doesn’t require professional installation, includes essential components that provide reliable visual and audio performance. It's a budget-friendly way to enjoy movies, TV shows, and live events from the comfort of your home.

Plan to spend at least $70,000 for a high-end home theater. At this price point, you’re paying for advanced components, including flagship projectors, reference-grade speakers, dedicated subwoofers, robust A/V receivers, and professional installation. These features deliver outstanding picture quality, rich surround sound, and a polished finish. Costs climb quickly when you add custom seating, acoustic treatments, and smart-home integration, so ask your installer for a detailed estimate before committing.

The ideal screen size for optimal home theater viewing ranges between 100 and 120 inches. A well-proportioned home theater room measures 24 feet by 15 feet, with a minimum ceiling height of nine feet. However, smaller spaces, such as 15 feet by 20 feet or 10 feet by 12 feet, can also work well. These dimensions enhance acoustics and visual performance, creating an immersive entertainment environment.

A well-built home theater room should last as long as the house, but the electronics inside need periodic attention. Plan to review your equipment every four to five years to see whether new formats, connection standards, or performance upgrades justify a change. Upgrading outdated projectors, receivers, or streaming devices keeps the system running efficiently and prevents compatibility issues, all while protecting the investment you’ve already made in the space.
