"If you have an emergency do not call this company. Contacted in September, consultant came first of Octoberand down payment for work was made. Mid- January and only half the job done. While Adao Natario was an excellent professional and did a great job sealing up the wall cracks in the basement,my disappointment with the Company in general is emense. Adao listened to my concerns and I’ll wait to see if the Company responds with appropriate work on the sump pump and discharge issue if they ever show up. Meanwhile, I am surrounded by water in the yard and just hope the sump pump in basement keeps working. Price below reflect only crack repair."

"7 new columns were installed including new footings. This is very physical labor and very taxing on the body: hammering old concrete, hand digging footings, properly installing new footings, this was a lot of dirt, rock and cement going in and out of the basement, yet the crew (Justin, Francisco, Brandon) always maintained a great attitude and worked continuously. The guys were very polite and professional. They were accommodating and answered all my questions. We ran into a few oddities and Justin was able to modify and resolve with a few phone calls to the engineers. We were able to raise the house up 1/4" to 5/8", before we stopped due to plaster starting to crack. We now feel comfortable continuing restoration of this wonderful 100 year old home, onto the next 100 years!!"

"On the first warm day in February, I came home from work to find water in the basement. Thawed snow had filled a window well and was seeping down the basement wall, soaking the floor of a storage room and part of a finished area. That night I bailed out the water, but by the next morning, it was like I'd never done anything. The first basement guy I called basically said there wasn't anything I could do about it, and that I'd have to regrade in the spring. Then I called Stumpf Construction. Chad Stumpf came out that day and used a small sump pump to remove the water (which he let me borrow until they were able to do the work), and he fixed the downspout, which was also part of the problem. He explained that because we live on a hill, water was draining right into our window, and that the best way to divert it would be to cut a swale (a small ditch) along the side of the house in the spring. He then explained how I could protect the window well so no more snowmelt would get in. <br /> It was May before they could do the work (probably because they're good), but Chad was in contact with me and had even been out once to explain what they'd be doing and to address my wife's and my concerns about how the swale might affect a large fenced-in garden. His recommendations seemed totally pragmatic, and I never once felt that he was suggesting we do anything unnecessary. <br /> The swale has since filled in with grass and looks great, but, more importantly, because of that and the regrading, we haven't had any water in the basement. The crew changed the shape of the garden to accommodate the swale, but they took a lot of care doing so, and it looks as if that's the way it's always been. <br /> <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Coralville, IA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
