"Nate (salesman) took all of the time required to answer our questions and develop a plan to deal with the high water table issues. The installation crew communicated with us throughout the installation of the interior drainage system and sump pumps and Dave (Service Tech) went above and beyond to finish the triple safe sump system installation and tweak other elements of the initial installation. All worked to leave the basement as clean as this process could allow."

".Completed holland paver walkway from front stoop to side porch. This project was added to finish off a 2011 project that included retaining wall, stoop repair and stairs/sidewalk to front stoop. The crew arrived early and stayed late each day until project was completed. This project required removal of existing concrete sidewalk from stoop to side porch; then, leveling the entire area and sloping for proper drainage and completing a matching holland paver curved sidewalk to side porch. This is a very professional landscaping company that completes the job on time and with great results!"

"We hired the Egress Window Guy to install a new egress window in place of a leaking glass block window in our basement. Their quote process was easy and straight forward. Installation was done within one day, and we couldn't be happier with the results. There is so much more light coming into our basement now, and we have a lot more peace of mind knowing it is an additional exit point should we ever need it (hopefully we don't). We are thrilled with the results and would recommend the Egress Window Guy to anyone in the market for adding a new egress window to their home."

"We have a rental near home in Two Harbors. We have a renter coming in on Monday ? this is Friday. The bathroom sink and tub drains were draining very slowly-or not at all. We did what we could but they were still draining slowly. I looked at Angies list reviews and decided to call Midway. They came out within an hour and apparently did a great job. I'm not sure if $146 is a great price or not ? we have never had this done before. But they came right out and got the job done ? what else can we ask for? Thanks, Angie's list! <br />"

"The work was done very well. The original estimate was developed based on the assurance that drain tile was in place inside the foundation (provided by me). After determining there was no drain tile inside the foundation, we were offered options for proceeding, chose one, and they were back the next day to finish the job. They were fast, efficient, and neat, and the price for the work was fair. If we needed basement waterproofing service again in the future, we'd definitely go to Safe Basements."

"This was during a very busy time after the flooding and it took a long time for the city to allow the project to start. Once it started, everything went quickly. The work was done correctly and passed all city testing right away. Jay was very professional, easy to work with, and knowledgeable about the specific project as well as related excavation work. I will definitely hire him again for more work on the property. <br /> <br />"

"The work was completed in a timely manner as agreed. Larry Shelton personally oversaw the project as manager. The time controlled panel took a period of time to synchronize the amount of water we used and as such sounded the alarm a few times. Each time I called Larry Shelton he came right out to the home and responded to the issue, tweaking the control panel. Mr. Shelton approached me during the work and stated "since they had the track hoe in the back yard he would pull several stumps that were in the near vicinity of the project at no additional cost. Once the work to the septic was completed the track hoe operator plucked the stumps from their place and tossed them into the woods. This created a much larger "re-seed" area than would have been required with just the septic repairs. After the ground settled the men returned to complete the re-seed portion of the project which required several truck loads of dirt due to the pulling of the stumps. The men were careful not to make tracks with the heavy loads of dirt and I was very happy with the results of the re-seed. I was totally impressed by Larry Shelton personally which was indicative of his company overall. Even after the project was completed and paid in full any time I called the company with an issue they responded quickly to remedy any issues."

"It took awhile for the work to be scheduled - this was a small job and they were busy. Did a very nice job. A couple of minor deviations from what was discussed. Discussed having it done with small sized exposed aggregate. Concrete delivered was a slighted larger aggregate - they pointed out mistake before pouring and explained difference. We agreed to proceed. Also, finishing cut was made a few inches off from where discussed. Cleanup was OK but some splatter was left on siding after work was complete."

"J. Benson was actually recommended by my insurance company.  The conflict of interest concerned me, so I talked to two rental owners (one of whom I knew) and two homeowners for references.  They were good, I signed the contract, and the J. Benson supervisor told me I would be satisfied with their work.  Everything went well.  Their subcontractors were cooperative.  J. Benson knew about fire restorations, they worked cooperatively with me and my insurance adjuster.  I came to trust J. Benson and the adjuster did also.  As issues came up such as  the quality of the replaced equipment or fixtures, or the detailing of a feature, the issues were resolved to my satisfaction (I was more involved in project oversight than the typical rental owner).  At the end of the job, I was satisfied, just as promised. <br /> It is now 2 1/2 years later, the the restoration has held up.  This review is tardy because I just didn't take the time; it should have been earlier. <br />"

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Duluth, MN

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
