"To say that Henry is obsessed with customer satisfaction would be an understatement. To say that he is dependable and committed to achieving high quality results would be a disservice to the immeasurable time and effort that he committs to his projects. I recently had the pleasure of getting to know Henry when our air conditioning system died during the hottest week of the summer. Our AC stopped working on a Friday night and by Sunday the heat became unbearable...especially unbearable with 3 small children in the house. I went onto AngiesList late Sunday night to begin the process of researching A/C repair companies and the first one on the top of the list was B.A.R. Appliance. It was the highest rated A/C company in my area so I decided to call. I left a message explaining my A/C issue and expected to get a call back the next day, because who checks their messages on a Sunday night?!? Well, to my surprise I received a call back from Henry almost immediately that night (on a Sunday night!). I told him about my problem and expected him to say that he's busy for the next month, however, he immediately acknowledge the urgency (no A/C with 3 small kids in the house) and said he would make time to come out the NEXT DAY. The following day, Henry arrived on time. He was very friendly and took the extra steps to keep things clean by putting shoe covers on as soon as he entered the house. We briefly chatted about my A/C issue and then he talked me through his process for diagnosing the issue. He started at the thermostat and explained that the thermostat is the first and easiest thing to check (and least-expensive thing to fix) so he talked me through each step as he checked the wiring and programming to make sure it was functioning. From there he and his helper checked the outdoor unit and the air handler in the attic. After 30 minutes Henry was able to determine the root causes and explained in detail how be came to his conclusion. I really appreciated the fact that he explained it all to me and checked the items that were inexpensive to fix (in an effort to save me as much money as possible). My system was over 20 years old and so it was time to replace it (rather than sinking more money into a system that had lived past its prime). I expected Henry to tell me that he wouldn't be able to replace the entire system for another few weeks (since he is the highest rated A/C guy in my area)...however, he told me he would be available to pick up the new A/C system and install it in 2 days....2 DAYS!!! The night before the installation I asked Henry if we should add a heat pump to the system....he agreed and was able to change the order (without giving me any grief about changing the order on the night before the installation). The day of the installation Henry and helper arrived ready to work. They spent the day in and out of the 110 degree attic during the height of the summer heat wave. By the end of the day we had A/C again and Henry was able to help keep costs within our budget. Henry's incredible customer service didnt end there. Over the next 5 days Henry called, texted, and stopped over in the evenings to make sure the system was functioning and not leaking condensation from the attic into the rooms below. Five to six weeks passed and an early cold fall frost came through, so we turned on the heat....and it wouldn't turn off and wouldn't produce heat (essentially acting like a cool fan on constantly in the house). Like our old A/C system, our gas furnace was over 20 years old. We let the problem go for a few days, thinking that it might a sporadic issue or even correct itself). After a few days I decided to contact Henry to see if he had the time to check it out. The next day or day after he was at the house walking me through his diagnostic process again. He quickly identified the issue and clearly communicated the options to me. He even went as far as to search online for the best price on parts for me. Henry is a rare find; a customer service purist who makes personal sacrifices to tend to his customers needs - day, night, weekends, even communicating with me from the hospital as his daughter was having a baby. He's the kind of compassionate person who would give you the shirt off his back and who wouldn't think twice if you called him for a ride if your car broke down leaving you stranded somewhere. When was the last time your service person contacted you days after a repair/installation to check to make sure everything was still ok? When was the last time your service person contacted you to check on your child after she underwent major surgery? My answer would be: "yesterday"."

"Continental's technicians were highly experienced, professional, considerate, respectful, hard working, and neat.  They arrived on-time when scheduled.  Allied's drilling and trenching crews were excellent also.  This was a big messy job that took about a week and we are very happy with the work that they did.  The owner of Continental, Frank Jackson, sold us the system.  He provided an extensive reference list that went back at least 15 years.  He was on-site for most of the job providing hands-on supervision of his technicians.  His technicians are so experienced that he didn't have to be there to supervise them.  Rather, I believe he was there to make sure that the job was finished on time because they are so busy.  Allied had an on-site supervisor at the start of the drilling process to finalize the location of the loop bores, but their drilling crew was highly experienced and needed no supervision.
Installing geothermal is a messy job.  The vertical bores and horizontal trenching for the ground loop makes a muddy mess.  The drillers from Allied were very respectful to the property, much more than I expected.  I expected that the drilling process would make "a mess and a half" but it only made a mess!  At the end of the job the ground was re-leveled and ready for seed, which has already popped and growing grass.  As one of the drillers said "the mess only takes grass seed to fix".
The HVAC technicians from Continental left the spaces where  they worked in "broom-clean" condition.  We had to do some "deep cleaning" afterwards, but this was completely reasonable.
We expressed our concerns about the job to the technicians before they started work because we do not know much about HVAC or geothermal.  They took the time to explain what they were going to do and how they were going to do it.  They kept us fully informed about their progress and included us in the decision making process when they had more than one way of running a pipe or duct.  They made us feel really comfortable and that we were getting a top-notch job.
While the cost for the system from Continental was a little bit higher than their competitors I think we got value for money.  In addition to the reference list we received during the sale process, we also know two families that used Continental in the recent past and they are very happy with the work that was performed.
We would use Continental again and would recommend them to others.
If you go with the option to integrate your hot water heater with the geothermal system (which is supposed to reduce the cost of the hot water that you use) I would reccommend that you bite the bullet and have a preheat tank installed at additional cost.  We didn't do that and in retrospect we should have based on some further reading that we did about how to get the most bang for the buck from geothermal.  It would be easy to install the preheat tank during a new construction project.  It would be harder to install the preheat tank during a replacement project (like ours was).

"Gregory did my estimate and he was extremely thorough. I had a total of 5 estimates he was the only 1 to take pictures of everything. So that way installers know exactly what to expect. They were the only company to include a wet switch under furnace for safe shut off during flood. He was also very professional, very friendly, and obviously very knowledgable. Except they are a bit more pricey than most other estimates, but if you have the money to spare and value a company being very thorough (going the extra mile), then it is woryh it and I HIGHLY recommend you give them a call."

"They were very responsive, came the same day to take a look so that they could install following morning. They came right at the beginning of the time window and finished as promised after couple of hours. HOWEVER, when it came to the coupon (which reads: "AQUA PLUMBING & HEATING CO, Water Heaters – $25 off any job for Angie's List members either 10% off up to $250.00 off bill***Please mention coupon when scheduling") they did not give me the 10% off (w`hich `would have been 132.50 USD) but $25 off on 1350 USD. Upon me asking they said the coupon is "awkwardly worded" and it's the $25 off - period. If I would have known that or the person I scheduled with and mentioned the coupon to would have informed me, I would chosen another provider with a better deal."

FAQs for radiant floor heating system installation projects in Essex, MD

Heated driveways either heat up with electric coils or from hot water flowing through pipes, coming from your boiler. These electric cables and pipes are generally only a couple of inches under the surface. As they heat, they heat up the thermal mass of the asphalt or concrete, which melts away the snow and ice. They usually run for an extra period after all the snow is melted to dry out the surface and avoid ice accumulation.

Heated driveways will melt off snow at a rate of about two to three inches per hour. The actual rate of melt depends on the temperature you have the heating set at, the type of driveway you have, and the climate you're in. Your driveway will melt much faster in 32 degrees than it will at zero degrees. So expect your results to vary a bit.

Heated driveways may crack if the embedded heating elements are positioned too near the surface or if a system malfunction occurs. This issue arises when the coils or tubes are not installed correctly, resulting in stress on the pavement. Once the heating system is fully corrected, the necessary repair involves sealing the cracks and resurfacing. This process restores strength and ensures lasting durability.

When installed and maintained correctly, a heated driveway lasts between 15 and 20 years, on average. Proper installation using professional standards and regular maintenance of components such as the boiler and wiring guarantees long-lasting performance. Consistent care and timely repairs secure the system's durability, ensuring reliable operation throughout its expected lifespan.

A heated driveway increases home value by enhancing curb appeal and ensuring safety during snowstorms. This reliable system adds a high-value feature that stands out in areas with heavy snow, reducing the need for manual snow removal. Homeowners benefit from improved aesthetics and energy efficiency, which contributes significantly to overall property marketability.
