"The first trip out, went sour. I left very explicit instructions for the driver to contact me multiple times so I personally could be there to witness and give instruction about the pipes inside of the tank also to provide payment ? This is a rental property the tenants shouldn't have to deal with this, they are nice older folks! The fist appt didn't happen, I get that. There is a lot of things that are unforeseen. The second appt,The contact didn't happen. He came pumped the tank and left. Not changing the pipes as requested, along with telling them how bad the tank was and was totally full, that it hadn't been pumped for years ( the same company pumped it a year ago ) Along with almost insisting on payment right then for the tenants! It kind of shook them a little, they are nice older people. There were 3 phone calls fired to me bright and early the next morning wanting payment for services performed ASAP. As if it were my fault they were not paid or like I wasn't going to! I just wanted my tank fixed, because something kept plugging it at the inlet it had only been a year since pumped last, with 2 older people living there and it was a 1000 gal tank. A couple phone calls and a visit to the buisness I got another truck scheduled and another week, the second trip out went ok. All of that for 1 phone call that wasn't made. Hey, could have been a new driver, or maybe having a bad day or two, but still some things happened there that no way should have."

"Harley and his assistant showed up in less than 24 hours and not only completed the job of pumping my septic tank. He was very helpful explaining all the ins and outs of the status of my tank, the biological health, advice for maintaining it and extending times between pump outs, etc... He even got me a really good deal on new covers which were completely missing when I purchased the house a few years ago. Thanks Harley!"

FAQs for septic system installation and replacement projects in Eugene, OR

The smallest standard septic system uses a 500-gallon tank, which costs between $875 and $1,150 installed. This size works well for single-occupant dwellings with minimal wastewater production. However, many local regulations specify minimum tank sizes, so check with your building department before committing to this compact option. Some jurisdictions require at least 750 gallons regardless of home size to ensure adequate waste processing capacity.

The installation timeline varies based on site conditions, permit processing, and contractor schedules. The process includes obtaining permits, conducting soil tests, excavation, tank placement, leach field construction, and final connections. Weather conditions, soil challenges, and inspection scheduling can all affect the overall timeline. It's wise to begin planning well in advance of when you need the system operational.

The most economical approach is to install a conventional anaerobic system with a plastic tank. To minimize costs while maintaining legality, obtain multiple quotes from licensed installers, consider scheduling during their slower seasons, and handle basic site preparation yourself. Never skip permits or required testing to save money—illegal installations can result in significant fines and mandatory removal, ultimately costing far more than doing it right initially.

Regular pumping helps prevent system failures and extends operational life. Most small systems require pumping every three to five years, though frequency depends on household size and usage patterns. Pumping services cost between $290 and $530, making this maintenance expense relatively minor compared to potential repair costs ranging from $500 to $2,600 for neglected systems. Establishing a regular maintenance schedule based on your installer's recommendations helps avoid costly emergency services.
