"I would highly recommend Nash Contracting, the replacement retaining wall was a huge undertaking and the finished project looks incredible. Reid removed the old fence and replaced, and removed an old garage/shed."

"Classic Construction did outstanding work on our home. They resided our entire home with Hardie Plank siding, to include all the trim, fascia boards, gutters, shutters and re-wrapped our windows. We also had them redo our screened in porch. It transformed our house and it looks brand new. The skill and craftsmanship of their team was outstanding and they were very reasonable on their costs. Jordan Skinner was great to work with on the project and he is very knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations to improve the appearance of our home."

"The worst company I ever dealt with. 1. They left out ceiling fan from estimate and demanded extra for it on the project day so I bit the bullet and agreed to pay for it. 2. They changed the plan where the trench will be dug because the worker noticed how thick the wall was. Because of this, they bursted water pipe and Molly, the office worker told me I wouldn't be charged for it but then changed her word later on and demanded that I pay half of the plumber cost. I argued back and she threatened to report me and put a lien on my house. 3. I told the estimator where the water line is and that the house is 200 yrs old and probably not built up to nowadays code. But they kept saying that it is my responsibility that the water pipe broke. I mean, even if I didn't tell them, it doesn't take an expert to tell how old the house is and the water pipe is visible??? 4. Molly, the office worker can't do math and put higher amount on my first invoice. Do not trust her to bill you correct amount. 5. After bursting the pipe, they covered the area upon rough in inspection to hide it from the inspector saying it was for my convenience walking the dog, etc 6. The plumber they hired didn't fix the leak properly and was still leaking the next day. Their worker noticed it and they sent the plumber back out without letting me know to my vacant property. 7. No apologies at all after all this mess but the owner decided to tell me to 'knock it off' because I was getting upset at this ridiculous conduct. 8. Molly, the office worker couldn't even bother to tell me what time the workers were coming so I took my day off expecting them to be here in the early morning. They showed up around noon. My husband could have met them if I knew that earlier. I lost my earning for no other reason other than her laziness. Again, no apologies. 9. The ruptured water pipe caused my hot water heater to break because it was full of mud. I had to spend another $1400 to get it replaced. Record every conversation if you must hire this company. Rather, avoid this cluster of inadequate people."

"Was given dates 6/15 - 6/19 and the work was completed by 6/17. Everything was done professionally the workers arrived by 8:30 each day and completed their days work by 5, and I am more than satisfied with the quality of the work and the professionalism. If I had any questions they were addressed within a reasonable amount of time. I received my quote for the work by email which was great I paid the first half of the payment up front on that same email, and when the work was complete I received an email and the remainder of the total cost was transacted on that email. I would recommend them highly!"

"The selection process was very informative and impressive with the expertise of the sales consultant who used her passion for design to make suggestions. The active listening skills demonstrated by Rosabella Picone, our in house consultant, let her understand our needs and design preferences. She was informative and polite as well as very professionally trained. An excellent example of how small family owned businesses perform and deliver. Enjoyed the experience and plan to shop there again!"

"Should be called "Steal-tite". Company came out to give estimate in MAY 2019. Said they couldn't do the job until December, but we weren't having any leaks by June, so we went ahead and signed contract, sent in $800 deposit. Well, we ended up buying another house and decided not to have the work done. This was about October. Tried to call Seal-tite several times, always get the "answering service" and they never call back. Finally found the card of the engineer who quoted our estimate, Curt Giantonio. He said too bad so sad for our deposit, and that we had no recourse to get the money back. I realize the contract said the deposit was non-refundable. But the company could have been courteous, understood the situation, and refund my deposit even though legally they don't have to. Instead they've chosen to keep my money for zero services rendered. I could understand them keeping a portion to cover the travel costs of the engineer who came on site to give the estimate, but there's no way that is anywhere near $800. Greedy company that obviously doesn't care about people."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Fort Lee, VA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
