"I was looking to replace my original deck. I contacted approx 5 different companies and decided to go with Deckscapes. Just so happened that I scheduled my free estimate on one of the coldest days of winter. Chip came out and discussed my project. Never once did he complain about the freezing cold and never called to cancel the appointment. He explained how the new deck would be built and showed me option available to me. <br /> <br />He emailed me the estimate in the time that he promised. However, due to the rain, my project didn't get started when scheduled but that was beyond anyone control. Deckscapes kept me updated on the delays. Once the weather allowed, they came out and replaced my deck. <br /> <br />I LOVE my new deck. I didn't realize how old my previous deck looked until I saw my new one. <br /> <br />I would recommend Deckscapes to anyone. They were very professional and completed the job as promised. <br />"

"We have a large deck and walkway that was aging badly. Peter and crew had to tear up the old deck and walkway, and then replace it..The job took ten days from start to finish. We were so pleased, we hired the team to put a new deck on our daughter's house next door. Peter was professional, honest, and very easy to work with. He knows his craft well. "

"Dan was reliable and accommodating. He disassembled our roof top deck so we could have our roof repaired. He reinstalled our deck with improvements to the railing, lighting and the deck surround. In addition, he installed a fence in our backyard. We liked the contemporary look of it and are confident it will hold up for years."

"Garth was great! We had a couple of bids for this project and they were in line with everyone else but explained everything better and made us feel more comfortable. They were communicative, were able to start within a week and completed the project in a couple of days. They even made suggestions for upgrades along the way while sticking to the original quoted price. They blended the rooms together seamlessly so you can’t tell there was ever a wall or a bar area there to begin with. Would 100% use again."

"Working with Paul was exceptional. After convincing my husband we needed a professional and not our neighbor to install our pool, I contacted Paul. He was very responsive to calls or texts, usually within an hour. He showed up on time. He had to "correct" the grading that a friend had done for us. As we observed Paul and his assistance throughtout the process, we could tell we hired the RIGHT guy. He was very willing to communicate with us any questions we had about maintaining our pool, options on pool treatments, etc. My husband even admitted that there was more to installing the pool than he thought and the price was more than reasonalble. Our 15x24 above ground pool was installed in a day, from ground prep to attaching the ladder. The site was cleared of garbage and area surrounding the pool was groomed. Overall a great guy to work with. HIGHLY RECOMMEND Paul for any job."

"It went great! I was looking to get my shed finished and Bergens Contracting and Repair was the first to come to mind after they laid a new roof on my house back in2005. The crew came out, did their thing, transformed my shed and cleaned up when they left. Shed looks better than my house now!! I think I know a company that can handle that!"

"Pleasure to work with BSC. They did an excellent job on my deck and were willing to make small design changes as we progressed. They were very accurate in measuring and cutting. Nice precision job! They willingly worked around my schedule when I wanted to be on site."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Fort Mill, SC

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
