"This is an excellent company. I was extremely impressed with the professional attention to detail. I was especially pleased with the precise delivery of building materials and removal of old deck material as the job progressed. The workmanship is first class. They are extremely easy to work with, and they went the extra mile to make sure I received the deck I wanted. I confidently give this company my highest recommendation."

"There is really no reason to go with anyone else—Exterior Works was the lowest price, most professional, and highest quality. I thought I had to choose between the high-cost, glossy brochure, licensed & reputable companies OR the cheap, unlicensed, pushy “if you ask for inspections the cost is double” contractors. Arafat quoted a much more reasonable price, gave excellent advice to help us build what would be most useful, never pressured us, and got all the appropriate permits & inspections. We were probably fairly high-maintenance clients, and Arafat was patient and kind, describing options as we went and modifying a ‘normal’ porch set up to reduce pollen so my highly allergic husband & daughters can enjoy the space. We absolutely love our new 3-season porch and pretty much live out here now. I strongly recommend going with Exterior Works for any outdoor project you have in mind."

"We built a brand new deck on the back of our house, replacing the original deck. Deck Builders did a great job from the minute I called them to when they completed the work. Randy was very collaborative and responsive as we refined our requirements and specifications. Once we committed, Deck Builders helped us with the County permits and our HOA submission. The two person crew, Baldemar and Miguel, were phenomenal. They worked incredibly hard in very hot conditions and always answered our questions and inquiries as they were doing their work. They were always very positive and seemed to care a lot about the quality of their work (which was excellent) Ricardo came by several times and ensured everything was done to specification and even made some recommendations on lighting, which the crew installed. I would strongly recommend Deck Builders to anyone."

"We had our deck and screened porch done by Moore and had a great experience. They were extremely professional and easy to work with throughout the entire process. We met with a few other companies but none came even close to Moore. Highly recommend!"

"Five years ago Rick and his team had completed a full rehab of our deck and we love it. Recently, a material defect occurred and Rick stood by his work when the manufacturer would not. At his expense, he got new material and provided the same great carpenters, (Skip, Gary, and Heracio) as last time and made things right. I highly recommend their work and am happy to share their name with everyone who enjoys our deck. Check out the photos.Thank you again."

"Ryan was professional and worked with us to replace our old deck with a beautiful deck we will enjoy for years. He was professional, responsive and on-time. William and his crew built the deck professionally, leaving the work area clean when they finished. They answered any questions we had during the building process. We are very pleased and have already recommended Resurrection Builders to several friends."

"Had a great experience doing a bunch of jobs around the house that we had put off for too long. Thomas and another gentleman whose name i forget came for a couple days and they did a wide range of things we had asked them to do- fixing two doors that haddnt worked, replacing and painting boards on our porch, fixing a handrail, etc etc. While they were here they noticed a section of shingles were coming down and they were able to fix that quickly. They did it all very professionally, swiftly, and good quality and humor. It feels like a new house - i wish we had them come sooner! We're definitely going to have them do more work in the future."

"Let me start by saying that I am very pleased with the quality of the roof that Roofing and More installed.  Their team worked quickly and professionally and did good work, respected our property and our neighbors' property by working efficiently and cleaning up thoroughly when they were done.  Compared to the roofing companies that many of our neighbors have hired, I think we fared very well.
We were less impressed by the sales pitch and how we were treated by the salesman after the installation.  We are not fans of high pressure sales pitches, and have a policy of not making purchase decisions before we've had a chance to sleep on it and evaluate our options.  After looking over our house and taking pictures, the salesman scheduled a visit to present an estimate.  The meeting for the estimate was filled with details about the materials they use, the methods and procedures they employ, and why they apply the techniques they do.  Unfortunately, after presenting all this information, the salesman switched into pressure mode.  First, he presented us with 'good' 'better' and 'best' options which each consisted of different sets of materials. These choices were bundles of options, rather than simply indicating price differences for each material choice. The salesman then indicated that we could get a 10% discount if we made our decision right then.  We didn't appreciate the pressure. We also asked them to price out insullating our attic, and the salesman included an estimate for the number of packages of insullation material and their price.
As mentioned above, we were happy with the work that was done.  The roof seems sturdy and well constructed two years on.  The day before the work took place, the insullation material was delivered to our house -- the same number of packages as in the estimate.  After the roof was completed and the insullation was installed, the workers cleaned up and packed up their material -- including 4 packages of unused insullation.
When they sent someone by to pick up our check, I asked about whether the cost of the unused insullation would be deducted from the estimated price, as it wasn't used.  The gentleman they sent to collect the check hadn't heard anything about this, and we had to call the salesman who first insisted that they used all the material, and then relented when I told him that I'd seen them carry our the unused material.  Eventually, we had the cost of the unused insullation deducted from our bill.  This left a bad taste in our mouths.
As a postscript, many months after the installation, Roofing and More called me to see if I was interested in hiring them for any other work.  When I mentioned my experience with the salesman, I was informed that he no longer worked for the company.  I have also received sales material from them in the mail twice -- both times in unmarked envelopes.  It just seemed a bit odd that they wouldn't be honest about the fact that they were sending sales materials and include their logo or name on the envelope.
Bottom line, they are somewhat pricy, the quality of the work is good, but we felt a bit uneasy with their sales techniques.

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Gainesville, VA

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
