"I needed a shower door and grab bars installed. Other companies would not do the work unless a complete remodel. Cransten was fair, and matched my job with Scott Bowers. He went over and beyond to see the work was completed; even after Lowes had ordered the wrong materials for my project. Would definitely use again."

"I have remodeled 5 homes and built one. With all my experience with contractors and subcontractors, I have never found one as reliable as Carson. He has helped my family with repairing older beach homes for the last three years. We have hired Carson to do a lot of jobs. He has completed all of them in a timely manner, using salt water resistant materials that will stand the test of time, and the end product demonstrates excellent craftsmanship. He helps us make decisions from 200+ miles away, staying on budget but producing excellent results. We haven't had to stress about overseeing the job as Carson treats our house as his own. We are beyond thankful for him, his team, and his attention to detail. My great grandfather built one of the homes in the 1950's and its withstood many Hurricanes. I'm so thankful that Carson can carry the tradition of excellent craftsmanship to our special place. As for specifics of this job, he built beautiful shiplap in our den, repaired our deck, replaced a rotten support beam with plumbing and electrical running through it, and painted our porch and deck. He did an incredible job."

"Matt is a pleasure to work with! Knowledgeable, reliable, and honest. He takes a holistic view of your home, current issues, and goals. He presents all the options and helps you create an action plan to fit your needs, budget, and timeline. The guys on his team were respectful and timely and genuinely seemed to enjoy their work, even in the sweltering August heat. I've had several other tradespeople go in the crawlspace for other projects and all have commented on how solid, stable, and clean my foundation is. I've recommended Matt to family and friends and will continue to use him as a resource and first choice for future projects."

"Craig Fine kept me updated on progress and any problems found along the way. We had termite damage which he repaired but then we had several other projects done by Craig such as replacing the asphalt roof with metal. Will be hiring Craig again."

"Currently we are in the middle of the remodel which Cheryl is overseeing. Cheryl not only designs but also follows through on the subcontractors for a complete remodel plan. She is simply stated outstanding in everything. I will rate her and the rest of the contractors after completion of project with pictures and costs. Right now we are recommending Cheryl to all our neighbors and friends as the only person to use if you want a competent and professional remodel."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Johns Island, SC

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
