"Brian came over after we had talked with several contractors about a concrete porch underside (in basement room) and one of those contractors made us think the concrete was in such a bad state of "imminent failure" that it needs a full replacement. So, while we continued to get quotes for a full replacement, we also asked a retired architect friend to give his opinion. He did not think concrete was so bad and he was glad we were having a structural engineer (Brian) coming over a few days later. Brian explained why he did not think the concrete was in need of full replacement (very expensive!) and also the damage was not a foundation/structure integrity issue (not "imminent failure"). We had spoken to several contractors and the cost to fully replace is upwards of 15-20 thousand dollars. From the state of the concrete, Brian did not believe the "symptoms" warranted a full replacement and that the more likely issue was simply that we never "sealed" the concrete with epoxy (and only painted the concrete porch). Given the sky-rocketing costs to do any home repairs, it seems more reasonable for us to do first level repair (not replace) that Brian suggests. Brian's honest and informative consultation (for free!!!) is piece of mind and a HUGE savings. We greatly appreciate Brian coming over to educate us - on his own dime. We will definitely ask Brian to come over again if/when we think we need an honest assessment of our home foundation needs."

You'll need sufficient wall space adjacent to your garage opening to accommodate the full width of the door when open. The exact requirements depend on your specific door configuration and track system. Before committing to a side sliding door, have a professional evaluate your garage layout to confirm compatibility. They can determine if your space can accommodate the hardware and movement path necessary for proper operation.
Side sliding garage doors may offer improved energy efficiency depending on their construction and installation quality. A properly installed sliding door with appropriate weather sealing can help minimize drafts and heat transfer.
For maximum energy performance, consider models with insulation appropriate for your climate. Consulting with a garage door specialist can help you select the right configuration for your specific needs.
The durability of side sliding garage doors depends primarily on construction quality, installation expertise, and ongoing maintenance. Regular inspection and maintenance of tracks, rollers, and other moving components will help ensure smooth operation.
Different materials offer varying durability characteristics—metal options require less maintenance than wood alternatives, which may need periodic refinishing to maintain their appearance and protection against the elements.
Converting from an overhead to a side sliding garage door requires significant modifications to your garage structure. This process involves removing the existing overhead system and installing new tracks and hardware for the sliding mechanism.
The feasibility depends on your garage's specific layout and wall space availability. Consultation with a garage door professional is essential to determine if your space can accommodate such a conversion and to understand the full scope of work required.
