"I highly recommend Sean and his team to all of my neighbors! He is very talented at building decks, they do wash and stains too. Very knowledgeable and he was looking out for our best interests. Great communication and answered all of our questions thoroughly. Love our new deck!"

"So at the beginning I was skeptical… no big fancy website, shrewd sales department, customer service representatives or middle-people… just a(The) Deck Guy(z)… a what you see is what you get-type operation, a real old-fashioned, word-of-mouth, independent small business. So I went with my gut (and my dog’s gut!) and I’m glad we did. It turns out it was great to work with someone who had real personal investment in the integrity of their craft, rather than just any random contractor assigned to the job by some bigger outfit collecting a paycheck. Allen replied immediately to my inquiry here on Angi, and shot me a ballpark estimate over the phone based on dimensions and materials, just to be sure we weren’t wasting each other’s time, and then he came out probably the very next day for a consult, might have even been a Sunday. I got another visit a couple days later with a written agreement/contract with prices and dates. Work began and finished on schedule, and on budget, including a few modifications and improvisations along the way. I was a little nervous when I asked them to extend a pathway, which involved a considerable amount of extra heavy duty concrete demo, and subsequent tweaks in design. But they rolled with it and made it happen on the fly, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. (Why on earth doesn’t Angi allow pics in the review?!) Al and PJ were a pleasure to see and interact with each day I was at home during the project. But on my work days I trusted them implicitly with access to my home/garage/yard as necessary, and they were beyond respectful of my property and pets… my dog and 2 cats enjoyed supervising the work and occasionally lending a helping “paw”. We’re actually going to miss having them around and just might have to find another excuse, I mean project! to hire them again in the future."

Customers say: Quality work

"I recently had Brassil Construction tear down my old deck and build a new one from scratch. I honestly canâ t say enough good things about this company. Mike and his team were a pleasure to deal with during the whole process. They showed up on time every morning and were very neat. Itâ s nice to know thereâ s still a contractor out there with integrity. I found Mike on Angieâ s List and reached out to him based on his reviews. Mike came out promptly and assessed the situation, explained in detail what needed to be done, and provided a competitive quote. One of Mikeâ s attributes, is his line communication. Unlike many contractors I have dealt with, Mike will always respond to your text or voice mail. Thereâ s nothing more frustrating than trying to reach a contractor whose voicemail is full and wonâ t respond to texts. Mike was always quick to respond to all of my inquiries. During the installation my wife and I had a few change of plans from our original thought process. Mike was very accommodative in making the changes we requested and also made sure that we were happy once he completed those changes. The greatest compliment to Mike and his team came from another contractor who was interested who bid for the job as well. After the deck was completed he stopped by to view and critique the finished product. After inspecting the deck for about 10 minutes he said, â Iâ ve got nothing bad to say. These guys did a great jobâ . Iâ m now going to have Brassil Construction renovate other parts of my home."

"They did a great job replacing and securing old drywall in our garage. They installed an electrical outlet which works perfectly but his suggestion, to make it easier, was to use BX which is not code in the area. Luckily I knew that because my parents would have gone with it unknowingly. I definitely wouldn’t hire them for carpentry work. We had a prehung front entry door put in and screen door reinstalled. We ended up having to have someone else come out and redo the job because they installed it so out of square that you could see daylight and the screen door wouldn’t close unless you pushed it with all your weight. They didn’t replace the interior trim or the piece of flooring they pulled out. They did a good job installing the peephole, mail slot and handle. Would recommend for small jobs but nothing too involved. Definitely not electric or carpentry."

"I asked DAL to do some repairs on our back deck, but after a conversation, he thought we wouldn't be given a permit and instead suggested that we may need a replacement. I sent Tim some pictures to take a look at our deck, and he gave us some great tips (without charge) on what we could do ourselves to make some quick repairs until we're ready to install a new deck. He was great all around. When we're ready, I look forward to hiring DAL to build our new back deck."

"I have been in construction for nearly 50 years, so I have developed a keen eye for quality craftsmanship. Our project was no small project, so there was a genuine concern that the right company be hired to do our project. After reading J T General Contracting's reviews, I reached out to Jim for an estimate. Again, as I stated earlier, I have been involved in construction for nearly 50 years, so when a contractor shows up for an estimate when he stated that he would, that is a good first step. In talking with Jim about our project, it didn't take long for me to realize that he knows what he is talking about and how our project should be approach. After interviewing two other contractors, it was a no brainer to go with J T General Contractors. Our project just completed today, and I can state that from the demolition of our existing deck, to the layout and installation of piers, Posts, Joists, Trex Composite Deck (with stairs and raised platform for the Spa) and composite Railings, I could not find one flaw in his workmanship. Jim takes a great deal of pride in the work that he is installing and demands that from his employees as well. Secondly, Jim has excellent communication skills, not only in responding to phone calls or text messages, but explaining what he will be doing each step of the way. I would have no problem referring J T General Contracting to family and friends and will be using Jim for our future projects."

Small jobs welcome

"Quinlan Construction repaired my mom's step and installed a handrail. I was very pleased by the initial customer service that the owner provided. He was polite, respectful, punctual and expressed concern about my elderly mother. He also seemed knowledgeable about the repair work that we needed on the steps and in other areas of the home. He quoted a price that I thought was a little high, but my mom used the company because of the customer service aspect. The workers were professional and punctual and they did a good job of making the repairs. They consulted my mom to explain what they were doing and asked her about her preference about the design and height of the handrail. They made a few cracks to the plaster on the wall when they installed the handrail. No big deal, but I think they could have patched them. My biggest problem was the lack of customer service after the repairs were made. The workers said that we would receive a receipt after the check cleared. The check was cashed the same day and I have called, texted, and emailed the owner to request a copy of my mom's receipt. The repairs were done on April 25, 2017 and I have not gotten a response. Also Quinlan was going to provide an estimate to do other major repairs and that has not been provided. All in all, I'm glad that Quinlan did the repairs, but I'm frustrated, disappointed and perplexed by the lack of follow-up. My mom has a lack of trust about workers because they often don't do what they say that they are going to do, and now we have to search for another construction company to do the other repairs."

"Great job! Dino is conscientious, honest, knowledgeable and professional. Tore down old deck and cleaned up debris, didn't even find a stray nail. Price was great, the deck is beautiful. I got my money's worth; can't say that often these days. You can't go wrong with Dino."

"Frank and his team replaced the old timber/wooden basement structural supports and beams with steel. This was not an easy project and was very involved including building temporary supports while taking out the old and putting in the new. I found very few companies willing to take on this project. They did a great job from start to finish and cleaned up the entire area when they finished. I would definitely hire them again in the future for other projects."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in La Grange, IL

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
