"Michael Brooks and his associate came on time for a schedule basement inspection. They were very thorough and explained their findings and advice. They also explained financing options. We decided on the AquaStop Basement Triple Sump Pump fitted to the existing drain tile. With a deposit on the day of inspection, we were also able to finance the remainder of the cost, which helps us get through tax time. On the day of the install, Jacob called as promised to advise us of their estimated arrival time. The crew, Jacob, Dustin, Cesar, and Jaden, were efficient and responsive to questions. They explained all they had done and how each control worked. And best of all, they left the basement super clean after the work was done. Well done, guys, and well done FSM. Thanks for the peace of mind."

"I am in the process of purchasing an older home. I was under the impression that this home had an original sewer line. I made the purchase, shortly after I was contacted by the city and they informed me that the sewer had been replaced. I was contacted by Clog-Busters and we agreed that there was no need to perform the inspection at this time. They were understanding and helpful with some additional information. They told me to contact Angie's list to get a refund as no service was provided."

"Called around 11 AM and was scheduled for next morning. But got rescheduled for 1:30 same day I called, after a cancellation. So that was good because we couldn't use our sink. Plumber not only did a great job replacing what needed replacing, but explained what was being done and how to prevent drain problems in future. Very personable. Also saved $35 off total bill with Angie's List coupon. Overall, good experience."

"Bill arrived on time and was very courteous and professional.  Did an excellent job of cleaning the coils on the outside compressor unit.  Never thought they would be so dirty.  Then he took the time to help me level the unit as it had settled over the years.  This was above and beyond what this service called for.
Over all, very happy with this service.

"We are so impressed with Michigan Plumbing and have already made recommendations to family and friends to contact them when needs arrive. They called to let us know the tech was on his way and arrived within 10 or 16 minutes of that phone call. He reviewed the situation and gave a recommendation and a reasonable quote. My husband and I were able to do the job ourselves, and feel that the company is honorable (which is not often the case in this day and age) and that their interest was in our situation. I am definitely calling them every time a plumbing situation arises."

"I'm selling a home in Holland. The appraiser noticed a crack in the poured concrete foundation and asked for further investigation by a licensed foundation expert. Bryan Foster showed up promptly, provided a written report that confirmed no settlement, bowing or water intrusion, and charged a fair price. I didn't need or ask for an estimate, but Mr. Foster provided one free. I appreciate that the estimate was separate from the inspection report."

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Lansing, MI

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
