"Tom was an incredible resource and project manager for our home backyard project. He worked with us to get the brick materials we wanted for our patio. He helped us install an area of artificial turf as well. His team worked hard and were working every day during the work week until project completed. Highly recommend Tom!"

"The crew came on time and were knowledgeable. Scaffold was setup in the morning and work began. The concrete cap was poured but it a awhile to take down the forms on the chimney but was not a big deal."

"We were really happy with this crew, they did what they said they would do and when we asked for some improvements (more sand between bricks, different gravel on the parking space) they did as asked

"Overall, I'm extremely impressed with LPD+Architectural Stonescapes. Ninety percent of the work was very good the first time; for the remaining part that had some problems, they returned twice more and kept after it until it was done. The bluestone repair, patching up a great big hole, is invisible. If anything, it looks better now that before the excavation. And supervisor Maria Larios was on-site taking charge of the most of the actual work, which is really rare in my experience. Thank you for excellent results.

"Demo started in November. I think that Dave and I would agree that was not the optimal time to do this project. It was a very involved project. Because of the roof top deck a structural engineer got involved in the architectural drawings and call for some really over the top supports. Dave's crew did a great job working with all of the demands of the plans. There are steel I beams as well as other laminated beams that were incorporated into the garage as well as a lot of steel to help with the stability of the structure. Dave's knowledge of construction came into play a couple of times. Most notably was the placement of one of the laminated beams. The architect had it in one place. Dave questioned that placement and made a recommendation for a different location. I consulted my architect and she admitted that the alternate placement was structurally more sound than where the drawings called for it to be. Dave also had several ideas during the construction that we went with that were benefits to us both structurally and from an aesthetic point of view. We wanted to be as maintenance free as possible. Dave put a special marine varnish on the pergola so it will not need as much maintenance as with using a normal stain. We also used all aluminum decking instead of wood. This was the first time that Dave's crew had use this type of product. It turned out very nice. We also used limestone on the iron stairs and it looks really great. Whenever I needed something done, Dave jumped on it and did whatever it took to make me happy. My only negative would be the cleanliness of the worksite during the entire phase of the construction."

"Finding a reliable landscaper was tricky because I live 300 miles from the inherited house. I found Mancera Brothers on Angie's List. Whenever I went to Chicago to work on the house, the lawn and shrubbery always looked clean. Mancera was the second landscaper with whom I worked on the house, and I was favorably impressed by their prices. My realtor said Mancera was very reasonable and in fact planned to ask them if they covered the area in which she lived. Doro communicated promptly via email and was always courteous on the phone.

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Lincoln-park, IL

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
