"Responsiveness was excellent--from responding to request for estimate all the way to the actual paving. The graveling and grading was done when they said it would be done and they were also true to their word in keeping to the schedule for the paving. The crew was prompt, professional, efficient, super competent, and did a really nice high-quality job. The driveway looks terrific and I paid a reasonable price for it. I consulted many other companies, but they were invariably more expensive but without offering superior quality. Finks' Paving was the best choice and I wholeheartedly recommend them and would use them again if I moved and needed asphalt services again!"

"Dave arrived early. We discussed the job and he got right to work. After grading, there was a short wait until the gravel arrived. The job was done to my satisfaction by 11:30 AM. Very personable and easy to talk with. He did exactly what I asked. Driveway is flat and compacted and has already withstood heavy rain and large delivery trucks. Recommended."

"Old World Stone showroom is full of a wide variety of countertop finishes. I was able to take home a stack of samples to check for color compatability. I worked with Brian, he was very helpful and provided quick answers to all my questions. I ordered my quartz countertops, and they were installed in 2 weeks. They look beautiful, and I love the o'gee upgraded finish. <br />"

"Brandon came to the house first for a walk-through of the yard in advance of preparing his estimate--which he got to me in writing the very same day. He and his crew actually arrived a day earlier than promised to do the work - which was fine. They began by removing all the leaves and winter debris from the perennial beds, and then edged all the beds. They also trimmed back most of the dead stalks from the previous year. I asked them to create a new planting/mulched area around several large tomato pots in the garden, which they did...very nicely. Then, they spread new hemlock mulch over all the beds around the house. The entire job took a day and half, which we actually appreciated, as it reflected care and accuracy. As a final step, they raked and power-vacuumed all the leaves and debris from the lawn. Everything looks excellent! The price for their work was very reasonable, considering Brandon had a multi-person team on the job both days. What made it a little more pricey was our specification of hemlock mulch - $125/yard. But we knew that would be the case, and so it wasn't an issue. We're very happy with Grass Pros' work, and will definitely hire them again."

"Fritz is the owner and was simply a pleasure to work with. Right off the bat we appreciated his honest input and advice to save us money. He had the most reasonably priced bid and also the shortest timeline to start and finish the job. He was easily reachable by phone or text and always took the time to answer any questions we had. The whole thing went smoothly and without a hitch and was completed in three days time. Afterwards he even dropped off a bunch of his tools and wheelbarrow to use as we installed the landscaping stone ourselves.  <br /> We will definitely be working with him again as we are now planning a paved area with a fire pit in our backyard. Fritz showed us some of the ones his company installed and we immediately appreciated the designs and solid workmanship. <br />"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Madison, WI

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
