"Living in Cheboygan, Michigan, it can be hard to find a trustworthy contractor. We are so glad we found Community Construction through their website, CommConstruct.com. We ended up hiring them to completely remodel one of our bathrooms. We wanted to change from a standard bathroom with a tub and shower to a beautiful tiled walk-in shower, along with a new tiled floor and new vanity. My wife and I are extremely happy with the results and highly recommend them."

"Very happy with the entire process. Communication was great and Eric even brought Reggie to house the day before the job started to introduce him so I knew who to expect in the morning. Reggie and Cole were great. They took special care to respect my home and did incredible work. My wife and I couldn't be more pleased with the finished product."

"We have a 1958 ranch and the only bathroom had never been renovated. We wanted to start from scratch down to the studs for a 5’ x 8’ footprint. Sales person was very helpful, patient, and knowledgeable in selecting the various components and colors for the bathroom. The contract was very clear and detailed. Payment expectations were 1/3 upfront, 1/3 at the start of the project, and 1/3 at completion. The shower install was completed by Bath Works, which had a 12 month same as cash financing for the shower portion only. HWC coordinated and selected the various trades involved, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, shower install, and painting. The start of the project was pushed back several times, but communication was good. The actual work process was expertly done. The workmen were respectful, cleaned up each day, and were highly skilled. My wife and I are so satisfied with the end result. It is like going to the spa everyday. We intend to renovate the kitchen and basement down the road, and will definitely be turning to HWC in the future."

"We thought we needed foundation work. They not only told us that was incorrect. They directed us to a structural engineer who would be able to help us. No charge. Most appreciated."

"Jeff has always placed a high priority on the quality of the finished project. There have been times he has found some unforeseen issues after uncovering/removing existing structures, and brought them to my attention, and wanted to do it right, even though it was going to cost more and take a little longer. He wants to do the right thing, and make sure the project is done right. I've always been satisfied with the finished product. When I had questions, he was responsive and explained things so I could understand them. He always presented a couple of options, and I never felt pressured into doing things one way or another. After presenting us with the options, he left the choices up to us. We've never regretted spending the extra money when required to make sure the job was done correctly. Jeff is also willing to provide a quick, ballpark estimate and advice when we are considering projects to save us both time. We are saving up for a partial kitchen remodel, and he gave us a budgetary number one day after taking some measurements. And finally, he has the ability and talent to hand-make custom cabinets - he was able to make built-in cabinets for an old closet in the basement and it looks like the cabinets and shelving has always been there. High-quality cabinet work and woodworking."

"Stephen was awesome to work with and his work is outstanding. We are SO happy with our new railings, they make the entire house look brand new. If you need work done in the Grand Haven/Holland area, don't hesitate to go with Northern Lights Construction. I've worked with a lot of contractors and Stephen is top notch. Highly recommend."

"I wish to comment on the exceptional service and quality workmanship that Conrad Consulting delivered on the re-roofing of my home. My roof is steeply pitched with several angles and had an inordinately heavy layer of shingles that had to be removed. Upon removing the shingles it was discovered that the undelaying plywood was extensively damaged and required replacement. Conrad Consulting was more than fair in their original pricing and this carried through to the extra labor and materials that were unexpected but necessitated. In fact, they also replaced several pieces of cedar siding that was also worn at no charge to me! The work crew was efficient, professional and completed every aspect of this project perfectly. The owner and his son followed up personally throughout the job and kept me well informed during the duration. I now plan to have some interior repair/remodel work done and will engage Conrad Consulting for this project also. I would recommend Conrad Consulting whole-heartedly (one of my co-workers is going to be contacting them for her roofing project as I have already recommended them to her)."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Martin, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
