"We hired matrix because we had a huge basement that was not finished. I researched many companies and got several quotes, and we ultimately went with Matrix. I can say from start to finish, the experience was awesome."

"Living in Cheboygan, Michigan, it can be hard to find a trustworthy contractor. We are so glad we found Community Construction through their website, CommConstruct.com. We ended up hiring them to completely remodel one of our bathrooms. We wanted to change from a standard bathroom with a tub and shower to a beautiful tiled walk-in shower, along with a new tiled floor and new vanity. My wife and I are extremely happy with the results and highly recommend them."

"We hired Restoration Plus to do a complete gut and remodel of the kitchen of the 1965 era home we bought. From planning layout to picking out materials, Scott, Ryan, and their crew were knowledgeable and professional. The work crews were polite and friendly. Everything was done in the time promised and done very well. We are very pleased with the work and we couldn't have asked for a better team. I highly recommend this company."

"F and J Construction finished my basement which included a large living room, bedroom, some plumbing and electrical work, and 2 egress windows. Jack and his partner Dave were absolutely amazing. I requested estimates from about 15 different companies and decided to go with F and J. I’m so glad I went with them. They were very easy to work with, kindly answered all my questions, and most importantly the work they did was superb. They worked with the contractors and easily completed the permitting process so I didn’t have to be involved. Even after they finished the job, when we were moving furniture, I scraped the wall. Jack patched it up and painted it even though it was my mistake. I trusted them when I was gone for the weekend and of course there were no issues. I’ve recommended them to friends and family members. I will definitely contact them for future projects in my house."

"Pat and Cheryl did a fantastic job with our kitchen. Not only was the work itself excellent, but they were professional throughout the course of the project; they maintained communication and always let us know if there was even the slightest change in plans. They were detail-oriented and cleaned up well after each workday. They were straightforward and we never once felt obligated to buy into anything we didn't want. Everyone is now in awe of our kitchen. Pat and Cheryl are kind, wonderful people, and we can't recommend them enough!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Mason, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
