"Contacted Allied Asphalt and they responded promptly to give me a quote. Max gave me various options to choose from and within 5 days they had replaced my gravel grassy driveway with crushed asphalt. Rainstorm yesterday further affirmed my choice as puddling areas were no longer present with their regrading of the driveway. Would highly recommend."

"Rodney is a Pro that knows what he's doing. He and his crew installed a driveway today and did a fantastic job. He and his crew were friendly and easy to talk with. The price quoted was fair and was exactly what I thought it should be. I had 3 stumps ground out the day before and he cleaned up the shaving and filled the holes for no extra charge. Just did it to be nice. Driveway is great. If you want paving work done, this is the company to call. Great experience."

"I wanted to give them a great review, the owner is extremely friendly and patient and had fair prices. They were going to redo my paved patio and install front landscaping. I was away for work when they installed landscaping, I was told about the pavers for edging they were going to use. But when I came home, I saw that the just used leftover bricks from the patio. They put one with a huge rust stain right in front that looked terrible and one brick was cracked on the side part of edging. I Ended up Removing the edging all together and redid it myself with different edging. ( I was also supposed to have bright fuchsia-colored lilies and I had dark red.) Also, the entire outer row of bricks on my patio came loose. The owner called back and sent someone to fix it without any issue. It is ok now but they used yellowish sand when they came back to fix it and the other sand is gray. It is noticeably different, when I removed the patio rug there is a huge line of the hardened sand on the concrete that I cannot seem to get all of it out just yet. The owner also told me he would get me a specific ground cover for a portion of the landscape, and he never did. I was very excited when I hired them and had high hopes that my outside would finally look like it should. While it looks better than it originally did, I feel like they tried to cut some corners on this project that ended up costing me more afterward. I just wish they would have put a little more care into it and really made it a quality work."

"The project date did not begin as planned or promised due to extreme rain and a drainage problem, which presented to us all that there definitely needed to be some sort of drainage applied.  When I noticed that the block wall was not the way I had planned, I informed the workers, and they did as I asked, no questions asked.  They planted the plants that I had previously chosen with Lorraine (some she had to order, and some came in when the job was finished and they came back to plant them, and some were unavailable, so Lorraine called and we discussed use of another plant).  When a plant later died, Lorraine had no problem replacing it."

"3 D promptly responded to my quote request. A very professional gentlemen came to look at the issue. He was right on time. He looked at the problem area and at the inside walls and floor structure and determined it was not an addition on the house but the way the house was built. He also determined it was not a structural issue but just a cosmetic issue. He gave us several suggestions that were very helpful. This was very much appreciated. Thank you for your honesty and integrity. This person could have told me anything and I would not have known better. Great company I was impressed by his honesty"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Merrillville, IN

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
