"Carroll Brothers removed our old, in-ground swimming pool. The space was very narrow, but the team got in and worked around the space, demolished the pool, back-filled, and graded our backyard in about 2 1/2 days. They filled in topsoil, and when I noticed that I did not think it was level enough to the manager, Tom, they brought in extra topsoil to build the lawn up higher, regraded, and seeded the lawn. The price remained the same even with the extra soil, and was a fair price, given the bids I had received from other companies in the local market. I would rehire if I had another pool to have demolished."

"I had a grading issue in my backyard causing water to run toward my house and into my basement. I called Mark's Lawn & Landscape and he was happy to come take a look to see how he could correct the issue. He came out a few days later, right on schedule, and said he could rectify the issue with no problem. Early the following week, his crew (two really nice guys) came out to properly grade my yard. They even carried it to the front yard to make sure the water didn't come close to my house. They provided the dirt, grass seed and hay for a very reasonable price. I had to work while the work was being done; but later that afternoon, Mark came out and went over the work with me. Their work was tested the very next day. We got a major down pour of rain and my basement remained dry throughout the storm. I'm very happy with the work that they did and I would gladly recommend them to anyone."

"Dave showed up, all 3 days, early (7am) and worked diligently. From time to time, my wife and I had questions regarding how to ideally improve aesthetics (ultimately resale value), Dave would provide detailed responses and patiently answer our amateur questions. When we didn't fully understand he took a minute to explain. From the get-go, Dave was flexible whether in the quoting process or construction phase. If you are like us, who care more about the outcome of the project rather than a fancy uniform, Dave is your excavator. Reasonable, experienced and reliable, we feel confident recommending Dave to our friends and families."

"As a new homeowner, I have had so many contractors try to get the best of me when they see I still have a lot to learn.  I met with 4 or 5 other plumbers before John Harris, and it felt like a fresh breeze had come through.
Super friendly when I first called in the morning, he offered to meet with at my house to take a look around that very same day in the evening.  He even did some research of his own volition, calling the city to find out where the city sewer line measurements were in my back alley since I told him I had a main sewer line issue.  He came prepared and happy to explain exactly what he would do to replace the sewer line, which was something I really appreciated.
Anytime I contacted John, he responded literally within a couple of minutes.  He came by in person to sign a contract for the job, which he wrote up in detail to the terms we had discussed.  On top of all that, he moved up the date of the job sooner when I told him the sewage back-up had gotten worse unexpectedly.  On the day of the job John and his company showed up on time and completely prepared for work.  They somehow broke up my concrete sidewalk, excavated the old cast iron sewer pipe and laid new PVC pipe across my entire backyard in just 6 hours (I thought it would take all day)!  They cleaned up after the new pipe was buried, and they were as careful as possible while moving around large pieces of concrete.  They made sure to show me how the water was flowing through, and I felt so relieved and confident the sewage would now be leaving my house without any issues.
BOTTOMLINE: John Harris is a rare find in a sea of tradesmen who either don't know or care about what they are doing.  He takes pride in doing good work.  He is intelligent and caring, and won't rip you off.  Calling him for any plumbing job will be something you wish you had done sooner!

"EXCELLENCE! The team was amazing. We had a leak in the front yard and it took 'a minute' for the county to find our shut-off valve to determine it was our pipe. Gary from Heil came out on time to give an estimate and they were able to get Miss Utility out and do the work the same day, all in about 3 hours! They only had to dig one hole near the shut-off to replace the whole line. They also filled the hole back in AND SEEDED and put hay on top, and at my request wrapped caution tape around the area (so the area can dry out). The hole they had to drill in the wall in the basement was patched and their "Pullzit” method worked beautifully (I actually video taped it, it was awesome to see). Oh and they either took off their shoes or put on their own shoe covers when they came in the house (didn't have to ask). Thank you Gary, Ronnie, Shaun, Tatiana and everyone involved for resolving this so quickly and efficiently. We HIGHLY recommend Heil Plumbing!!"

"They showed up on time and got right to work. The actual installation went okay. They, however, did a very poor job of cleaning up behind themselves. Also, when they refilled the hole they dug it wasn't close to being level with the rest of the yard. Instead there was a very visible large mound of dirt. I contacted them a week or so after having the work done, to discuss a concern, and the person I spoke with completely blew me off and dismissed my concern. That is when they lost any opportunity for repeat business from me."

"I hired Devin to do some grading / dirt work in my yard. He is very knowledgeable about drainage and the way water moves through a yard. It helped that as we were discussing the scope of work he could tell me what the result of everything he would do would be with such accuracy. I know this now, as I’ve waited to write this review and we’ve since had rain storms. I would hire Devin again in a heartbeat, but I don’t think we’ll have anymore drainage problems. Hire Devin for any dirt projects or landscaping you need done! His phone number is (443) 608-3258"

FAQs for excavation major grading or resloping projects in Millersville, MD

You can excavate in winter, but frozen soil slows down the process and increases labor costs. Many grading companies offer discounted rates during their off-season, so ask for a winter quote and weigh the savings against a longer timeline. A brief conversation with a local professional will help determine whether cold-weather excavation is suitable for your site.

Foundation digs can be completed in as little as three days or take up to three weeks. Soil density, access, weather, and hidden obstacles all play a role, so every timeline is a bit different. Have your contractor walk the site and flag any potential issues early—clear expectations help keep both the schedule and budget on track.

You must always call 811 before excavating. Dial 811 a few days in advance so that utility crews can mark underground lines and ensure the area is safe for digging. Hitting a buried cable or gas pipe can be both dangerous and expensive, and many municipalities will not issue permits unless the site is flagged correctly.

To remove soil during an excavation project, your crew will load the spoil into dump trucks with a backhoe or excavator, haul it to a disposal site, and return for the next load. Efficient hauling keeps the work zone clear and the project moving. Depending on the site and volume of osil, multiple trucks may rotate to maintain a steady flow.
