Customers say: Quality work

"I cannot say enough about what a pleasure it was to work with Andy and how thrilled I am with the finished result in my kitchen. I collected a number of recommendations from friends for other contractors, whom I met with - but, I am so glad I went with Andy. From the start, his communication was exceptional. He gave me a very realistic (and ultimately accurate) timeline and I always knew exactly who was going to be working in my house on what days. No surprises what-so-ever, and when there were some minor unexpected plumbing issues once he opened the walls, Andy set up a time to discuss options with me and presented me with multiple solutions depending on my preferences and budget. There are SO many decision to be made for a large project like this, and as a first time homeowner, I was a bit overwhelmed at first - but Andy did an incredible job guiding me to quality suppliers for materials and helping me through the process all along the way. I never hesitated to ask if I had a question and Andy always took the time to respond and explain things in a way I could understand. Andy did a lot of the work himself, but his sub-contractors were also superb. Despite the fact that my kitchen was completely torn up, the house stayed surprisingly clean, they always left the site in great condition at the end of the day and were very respectful of my time and space. Even though the job was completed a few months ago, Andy has stayed available to me as I have had one or two silly little questions come up - he's been quick to respond and make sure I am satisfied and have the information I need. Andy's pricing and estimate upfront was clear and straight-forward and again, no surprises or anything questionable on that. Very fair cost for the quality of work and professionalism. I will be doing additional work (bathroom remodeling) in the next few years and would not go with anyone else besides Andy & Scott's Home Renewal. Photos are taken from different angles - but it is the same kitchen :)"

"I had 2 bathrooms updated and a few more small improvement projects. Communication was great, everything was finished in a timely manner, Yair and Jared were professional and friendly. The results surpasses expectations. The photos don’t do it justice. "

"Nick remodeled our 2 level 1 bathrooms & did a great job. He helped us pick things out which helped a lot. Picked things that would last. They handled all the painting as well. Very trustworthy as well. Would recommend him again."

"Des Moines Area Roofing was professional, trustworthy, and demonstrated excellent attention to detail from initial contact to job completion. Cleanup was so thorough that the next day you wouldn't even know that such a major project had taken place. It has been 2 weeks since the new roofs and we haven't seen even one stray nail left behind (and they did a complete tear down to both buildings, right down to the wood). An excellent company with which to do business. I offer my highest possible recommendation."

"I'm very pleased. I had concerns about dust and fumes from the epoxy. The dust was minimal and fumes were not an issue at all. If I had to do it all over again, I'd set up a box fan with filters, as I've seen on YouTube, but even without that, the dust was not overwhelming. The workers arrived on time, explained what they were going to do and welcomed my checking in on them. When they went to lunch, they cleaned up their work area, (even put the toilet seat down in the basement bathroom), something I didn't expect at all. I had questions when they were at lunch, and the salesman got the answers I needed quickly. A couple of things I would change about this process: 1. After they were done, cleaned the area for the day, and put their equipment away, one of the workers invited me downstairs to approve their work. If I had not approved, it was a bit late for me to object as they were packed and ready to go. I suggest in the future the homeowner be asked for their approval before everything's packed up. Their work looked good, but this seemed like a manipulative tactic that wasn't appreciated. 2. The more experienced of the two workers explained early on that he needed to remove some insulation but assured me he'd put it back when he was done. When I saw that he'd not put it back, I mentioned it. He refused to put it back, saying "It doesn't matter". It was an odd way to end a perfect job up to that point. I was totally pleased with how everything was handled, and then that comment and behavior from him just put a bad taste in my mouth. That evening or the next day, I received a very nice gift from the company that was just a really nice touch. A couple of weeks later, we had heavy rains and I experienced water along the walls where the work was done. Within a week of me raising the concern, an arrangement for a technician to visit my home was made. I appreciate their prompt attention to the matter. I expect it's very simple like needing more epoxy at the base of the straps, so I decided to go ahead and submit this review. It's difficult to find trustworthy people to do work in your home. I'm very relieved I found a company that is totally worthy of that trust and highly recommend Acculevel. The work they did looks good and solid."

"Ivan was so helpful.  Many service providers refused to even do our job.  We had an existing egress window going through our basement wall that we wanted to have removed, have the hole enlarged, and have a set of french doors installed instead.  Ivan even picked up the door for us at Lowe's as I don't have a trailer to get it in.  He and his crew cleaned up the area well, installed the door on time, and it has held water tight in all of our rains that we have had lately.  I am very pleased.  He was excellent to work with. <br /> <br /> <br />"

"Came home to find wet carpet in our basement.   Did not have a plumber so began the process of reaching out to family, friends and finally Angie's list.  Read the reviews regarding DDS Plumbing on Angie's list and of all the plumbers listed they had the most positive reviews.  .  Called them at 6:45 am and they were at our door within a hour of our call.  Assessed that the sump pump needed to be replaced.  It was 22 years old.  Provided  advise on what we needed to do with the water on the carpet and what to expect about the new sump pump.  The price was very reasonable.  You know when things go wrong in your home they never seem to be at convenient times.  So to find a professional that was extremely responsive and help us with the issue so quickly AND not over charge for the assistance is amazing.  Plus give us a 10% discount is wonderful. Have already decided that we will definitely hire DDS Plumbing again to help us upgrade fixtures.  We would highly recommend them and appreciate how well they took care of us.  Totally eliminated our worry and concern. <br />"

"I was inspired to have my ducts cleaned when I noticed my next door neighbor was having theirs completed. I read the reviews on Angie's List and selected Ducts in a Row. I contacted Steve on Monday; he came out Thursday morning. He arrived promptly. We went through the house so I could show him the location of the vents and then we went to the basement. Steve explained what he was going to do and went right to work. It took Steve approximately 2 hours to clean and sanitize the ducts. He indicated the recommended interval to have ducts cleaned is 3-4 years. When he was finished, he showed me the bag of debris (dust, pet dander, etc) that was extracted - it weighed about 15-20 pounds which Steve said is normal for my size house and initial cleaning. I highly recommend Ducts in a Row - very professional, prompt, and helpful."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Pleasantville, IA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
