"I recently had my shingle roof replaced and I?m very happy with the results. The team was professional, punctual, and completed the job efficiently. The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a roof replacement."

"This is the third time I have used this Angie's List Deal with Alliance Home Improvement. I continue to be satisfied with their work and will use them again. They have been consistently prompt, efficient, responsive to requests, and conscientious about full clean-up after the windows were installed. The only slightly non-professional (but amazingly trusting) aspect was that I was not presented with or sent a bill, but instead was just informed by the workers who installed the windows that, "if I wanted," I could pay by going online (which I did). I have also been pleased with the windows themselves, which seem of good quality and easy to open and clean."

"Chris does excellent work and is very Meticulous about what and how he does it. If you are ever in need of a patio or deck, Chris is the one to call. I couldn't be happier. He actually helped me when I had hired someone else, who did a terrible job. I wish I could post my patio area. It is truly amazing ?"

Historical home required rotten wood replacement ? numerous locations around the house require replacement or repair of external wood siding, trim work - excellent workmanship very happy with work performed.

External Paint  sanding (prep) ? wet sanding of the home went quickly and very clean  - superb workmanship very happy with work

External Paint tape (prep)- this is where the project was very slow and time seem to take forever to complete ? 2 weeks of taping .

External Paint ? primer coat - excellent workmanship very happy 1 day

External Paint ? base color 2 coats - excellent workmanship took too long to complete-  8 days

External Paint ? trim color - excellent workmanship took too long to complete- 5 days

If you are not looking to get house done quickly 1-2 weeks then these are the guys for you excellent work but slow

"Roger showed up when he said he would, and gave me the week before windows would be ready, to confirm a general install date. Called again 3-4 days before to insure we would be ready and available. Showed up when he said he would be here to install, and finished them quicker than expected. Would use again! Cost includes the 5 replacement windows"

"Day #1: Asphalt driveway and concrete sidewalk removed. 4 feet of lawn removed & relocated to other side of driveway. Approximately 5-6 inches of crushed rock added to driveway and rolled, base for the new patio block sideway laid and rolled. Mailbox temporarily removed and relocated due to expanded driveway. Approximately 5 feet of sidewalk patio blocks laid. Approximately 3 inches of asphalt laid on the driveway, rolled and stamped. All in approximately 4 hours. Day #2: Remaining patio block sidewalk laid. Patio blocks added to porch, sides of porch, steps and front of steps. Mailbox reinstalled properly using concrete to secure. Lawn raked and smoothed out to height of driveway. All in a little over 4 hours. Left us about 20 patio blocks in the event we have to replace any in the future. I wish Angie's list allowed reviewers to post pictures of the final results. We are absolutely thrilled with the quality and workmanship performed and highly recommend this company. They are hard workers and take pride in everything they do. The only issue I had, and not happy with, is they have this statement on their website..."We believe in all the work we do and will stand by any work we do up to 7 years." Before they started the work I asked about the warranty and the owners son just smiled. I should have pressed him on it. When the work was done, and before I paid them, I asked him to put the warranty on the contract and I mentioned the 7 years stated on their website, he said they normally only warranty driveways and walkways for 12 months but he'd put 3 years on the contract. The warranty is not stated on the contract so I recommend you have them write it on the contract before you sign it."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Poquonock, CT

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
