"They came out in the rain, at near flood stages for the Tualatin river. My new ramp was about ready to end up in the river, and my dock was about ready to go down the river after a tree floating in the river hit the dock. They were able to come up with a temporary solution to salvage both the ramp and the dock until this spring when we will look at a permanent solution. They responded in a timely fashion, did what they said they would do, and came back to address some of our concerns at no cost. In addition, there have been follow-up phone calls to make sure things are stable. Good job!"

"I have never had good luck with contractors before and was lunching with a friend, when I was talking about my frustrating experience with looking for someone to help prepare my home to go on the market. She was quick to recommend Adam with Ron Can Do It. She had worked with him on remodeling her powder room last summer. In talking with Adam, he had some wonderful suggestions on replacing my old carpet and putting in bamboo floors. At first I didn't think I would like them. He was kind enough to drop off a couple samples, and one really caught my eye. In the four days he was in my home, I got to know him quite well. He was very curtious and just a joy to talk with. He was always cleaning up before he left, which I don't think I've ever had someone bring my garbage can up as they came to the door. That really stuck out with me. They floors look amazing. I can't believe how much it changed the look of the home. My realtor was even surprised how much it added to "wow" factor when she walked in. I can't wait for this summer to see Adam again and build our new deck at your new home. Mary

"Hiring Greg Gardner at Elephant Builders was one of the best decisions we every made. We decided to replace our porch after hassling with the maintenance for over a year. Painting it and continued to have it chipping away. We interviewed 5 companies. Two Home Depot referrals that did decks, two builder/remodeling companies and Elephant that specialized in only building decks and porches. Price wise, the Home Depot referrals were at approx $10,000, young and inexperience guys, Elephant was at $13,000 + additional design items he exposed us to that we wanted totaling $15,000, another builder was at approx 15,000, and the last builder was at $21,000. No one had even mentioned the optional design elements Greg did. Plus Greg said he would be on the job every day with his men. None of the others committed that way. I went to see three of Greg's jobs and talked to the property owners. Jobs looked great, all owners happy, one was even surprised that Greg reduced the final price because it didn't take as long as he projected. My wife and I were convinced, this was the company we wanted. And what a great decision. After Greg's crew demolition, the prior framing underneath we so poorly done and rotted, we opted to have it all removed and have Greg start from scratch. Greg told us what the additional cost would be, which was very reasonable, and then said he was crediting us from the original bid for the work that would have had to be done if we left the original framing in place. Greg and his men showed up everyday on time, and finished on time. they cleaned up, put all of our porch furniture and plants back in place and showed nothing but character and class. Extremely nice people who did what they said, exactly. Even some extra stuff we never expected. You will not be disappointed using Elephant Builders."

"I am pretty sure in the end, they did way more work than they initially bargained for. They were very careful in digging around our gas, water, air conditioner lines and several other "surprise" pipes and wires. In the end the work was completed and the area cleaned up so that you could barely tell they were there. The work took 3 days. They were very professional, and kept me informed. They allowed me to be "nosy" during the process and considered my suggestions."

"Rick came in to my house late last year to check on what needs to be done. Later, over the phone, he quoted $1,450 with Angie's List discount - for the above mentioned work - plus $650 for painting. His quote was the most expensive one but he seemed to be professional and had good reviews on Angie's List, hence I decided to hire him. We had to reschedule the work as weather did not permit or he was busy with other work. He showed up on time on the day of work. After he removed the old trims, he suggested not to install z-flashing to avoid new cuts on the siding. He subtracted $300 for the z-flashing with a new total of $1,150 for the job. He applied Grace Vycor Plus window flashing tape on the siding starting from the bottom, then sides, and then to the top of each window. Then, he added 1x3 primed cedar trims around the windows and applied caulk between siding and trim as well as between trim and window frame. He did not paint as he apparently subcontracts painting jobs. He guaranteed his work and said he would come back if any water intrusion issues are seen. He was very professional and pleasant to deal with. I would recommend his work.

FAQs for water dock building service projects in Portland, OR

With the right design and maintenance, a vinyl sea wall capped with concrete can serve you for 50 to 70 years, while poured-concrete walls last 50 to 60 years. Steel or aluminum options last 30 to 40 years, and treated wood holds up for 10 to 25 years. Plan on regular inspections and prompt repairs to keep any sea wall performing at its best for decades.

A bulkhead holds back soil in calm, inland waters, while a sea wall is built for pounding coastal waves. The sea wall’s job is to absorb and deflect wave energy, offering stronger erosion control. A bulkhead mainly keeps soil in place but isn’t designed to stand up to heavy surf.

A sea wall needs a deep footing—four to 10 feet or more—so it can resist shifting soils and constant wave pressure. The exact depth depends on your soil conditions, water depth, chosen material, and local building codes. Your marine contractor may dig even deeper to secure the wall in place and meet the structural specifications.

Plan on a quick visual check every season. Look for cracks, loose panels, or washed-out soil, clear weep holes so water can drain, and trim plants that push against the wall. Catching small issues early helps maintain the structure's soundness and prevents major repair bills later. Your sea wall builder can make recommendations for an ongoing maintenance plan that will help keep your sea wall in optimal condition.

Most residential sea walls are completed in an average of one to three weeks, covering preparation work, sheet piling, and cleanup. Larger commercial walls require additional engineering and can extend well beyond that window. Your crew drives steel or vinyl sheets into the soil, then finishes caps, tie-backs, and grading before final inspection.

The “best” wall is the one engineered for your site, but concrete often tops the list for pure strength and longevity. It anchors soil, blocks water, and handles repeated wave hits better than wood or light-gauge steel. Collaborate with a marine contractor to determine the ideal material for your shoreline and budget.
