"Everyone I have spoken with and talked to and worked with at Bay Crawl Space and Foundation has been exceptional. My husband and I recently purchased a new home and were interested in planning for improvements to the basement/crawlspace as we live in a flood zone. I had several companies come out and look at the space, and Bay Crawl Space was easily the best experience I had. David was very knowledgable and great at making reasonable recommendations for my crawl space and basement. He discussed multiple options with me and was candid about price, giving me his honest, practical opinion that fit within what we were looking for. Their pricing structure was easy to follow/compare and the quote was reasonably priced, if not a little lower than other companies I spoke with. There was a 6 week delay between inspection and installation of our new sump pump, but this wasn't an emergency, so we didn't mind the wait. However, once scheduled, I received several calls with great communication and payments were easily made online. When the time came for installation Matt and Sharron arrived on time, answered all of my questions/concerns and did a fantastic job installing our new sump pump. Two days later the electrical team Adrian and Paul also came on time and did quick work installing the outlet and lights around the sump pump. They even took a look at our electrical panel and answered some questions for me unrelated to the job. All members of this team were communicative, respectful, and great to work with. They left our basement clean and the installation looks really professional. It has been working well with the heavy rains we have recently been experiencing and I would recommend all of the members of this team if you have any concerns about your crawl space/basement. They have all really helped give me peace of mind and I will use them again if we have any other concerns Crawl Space or basement concerns."

"I contracted Virginia Foundation Solutions because of an issue I had with water seeping through the concrete/cinder block wall to the garage during heavy/steady rains and would install a weeping tile and pump system. The crew that came out to the job site, Joel, Alex, Tomas and Jacke known as "The Blue Crew", were on time and started the work right away. They were cognizant of the plumbing to the water well and the electrical on that side of the house. They were very careful during the excavation. The work took a good part of the day, and when it was completed, I couldn't have been happier with the overall results. I had brick pavers that I was able to incorporate into the landscape to frame out the upper layer of rock that was applied over the drainage rock and weeping tile/tubing. The testing of the pump functioned perfectly, and the electrical work was contracted through DT Electric LLC. Thank you again, Virginia Foundation Solutions and DT Electric in assisting me to resolve my water intrusion problem."

"Overall fine install, had a hiccup with equipment that delayed finishing project two days. Put forth a lot of effort to protect surfaces from over spray/cross contamination. Had appropriate personnel protective gear for the crew of two men. Created a complete air tight envelope for the 2 story shed. Pleasantly surprised over the overall improvement in building structural strength. Area for improvement is the notification of customer when in route to the job and when arrive onsite. Cost was a little high, but great product/quality, you get what you pay for. Better than the cheaper options justifies the price. Easy to work with... Before and after photos attached..."
Unsealed porous foundation walls. Efflorescence has grown along the outside walls.
Plastic is laid out to protect the freshly pained walls and floor.
Open vents in the foundation walls allow outside air and moisture to infiltrate the crawl space, increasing the relative humidity and allowing mold spores to thrive inside.
Spray foam application in progress on warehouse walls.
The dirt floor is exposed, which will allow the moisture from the earth to rise uncontested into the crawl space, adding to the increase in relative humidity.

"Main lead tech, Ron, did well hooking coil to outside compressor. The asst tech went under house to install new cooling coil to ductwork. He bent ductwork, taped it with insulation tape that connects coil to duct work. He failed to tell main tech what he did, but also main tech failed to check asst tech's work under house. The unit was working when they left. But they only ran it lil bit. Because it was a cool week we did not need to run a/c.. When temp rose, we turned on a/c. Worked for about 2 hours, when air pressure eventually blew insulation tape apart which allowed all the air to go under house. In turn, it froze up cooling coil & compressor. After calling, texting, etc for 3+ days, with no answer or response, we had to call another company to come because we had no a/c. The new company told us what had happened & gave us estimate. We said go ahead because we had no a/c. He went under house, removed bent ductwork with tape still on, & brought to us to see. He replaced the ductwork, & attached ductwork to cooling coil. He ran a system check with professional tools which is how he determined the previous tech added too much freon. So the additional cost for 2nd a/c company was $350. In addition to the already $800 we already paid Bellcow."

"Taylor Jeffries came out last year to inspect my crawlspace. He was very thorough and ultimately recommended a full encapsulation and drainage. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and the crew that installed the work was fabulous. My HVAC bill went down, my allergies have subsided, and I feel safer that my wood is not going to decay from moisture problems."

"I love them so much, I took them to my mother to do service as well! They were quick, cleaned up after themselves real well, and they were 100% above, and beyond. My mother has a very hard accent so some doesn't talk to her, and talks to me instead and that irritates her, but this company tried their best to talk to her. I recommend ASAP Sewer & Drain to my family, and friends."

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Portsmouth, VA

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
