How much power does a sump pump use?

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

How do I size a sump pump?

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

What are the signs I need to replace my sump pump?

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

Do I need a plumber to install a sump pump?

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. "Marcus came over the day after I requested the quotes (quotes requested Sunday, he came Monday.) He assessed the situation and explained options and pricing. He very willingly attempted the lower cost option first, even though we had doubts it would work. He told if it did not work and we had to go to the higher cost option, I would only be charged for that, not both. We did have to go to that option and he was able to clear the clog from my sewer line. He then inspected with a camera and showed me that there were several roots intruding on the line. He recommended repeating the process with a nozzle designed to remove these. He did not have that on his truck, so another visit was scheduled for today with a different tech. This was also successful and it was clear from the camera inspection at the end that the roots were gone. I was expected a horrible mess from this process, and was very happy that both operations were completed with minimal additional sludge in my basement."

"Technician arrived over 1 hour after the time given by office. Did not know the job specs that were given when appointment was set up. Had to return to shop as tech did not come prepared. When settling bill tech said $350. We explained that we should not have to pay road time for shop run. He called office and came back and said the cost was $350, taking the shop run off the cost. We stated that was the same cost. Tech said it was $75 for the shop run making the bill $425, so minus the $75 the bill was now $350. The cleaning of one pipe with no blockage should not be $425. Tech wore mask 2 out of the 3 times we conversed but the mask was not CDC approved, which means the customer isn’t protected. I think EcoClean needs to improve its communication with clients and needs to improve field tech and office communications."

"Total Ripoff! My boiler stopped working the other day and my usual company was unable to come out due to being short-staffed that day. I resorted to google and unfortunately came across Aire Serv. Their technician (who was very nice) came out to assess the situation and determined it was caused by a damaged pilot assembly. After calling around for replacement parts, I was told that the parts were out of stock until later in the week. Despite this, I was still charged $234 for the trip fee and diagnostic fee. I was then quoted $1112 for the repairs to be done once the parts were in. I shared this quote with my normal company and they were appalled! Thankfully they fixed the issue for less than half the price Aire Serv was going to charge me! PLEASE do not use this money-grubbing company, and instead use a local independent company if you need heating work done!"
