"I scheduled service through an Angie's list deal: $75 to switch from the heater to the evaporative cooler. The service was scheduled for four days after I purchased the offer and contacted Luis, for 8:30 a.m. After waiting for more than 45 minutes that morning, I called Luis who said that some employees didn't show, etc. He apologized for not having called me and said that he had someone working on a job and would send them to me next. He checked in with them and then called me back to let me know that he could be there about two hours later. He called again to let me know when the employee was on the way, and he also said that he could throw in a free service when changing from the cooler to heat for the winter. Overall, though I was a little frustrated by the lost time, I thought Luis was very professional. He depends on other people who let him down that day, and he handled it as well as he could after I called. It's apparent that he cared about having my business, and I appreciate that.
The employee who arrived to set up the cooler didn't rush and seemed to do a thorough job. The cooler is on the roof, and I didn't go up to look at it. The only thing I didn't really like was that he tossed my metal cover (that protects the cooler during the winter) off of the roof and bent the corner. He said they usually land flat, but I don't think it's a good practice to toss it off at all. I was around and would have been happy to grab it. As it turned out, I also needed some repairs before he could turn on the cooler. He said a pillow block bearing was worn completely through and had to be replaced. Fortunately, he went ahead and got the part and made the repair then and there. I know that was not in the plan, so I was appreciative that they could accommodate that. Unfortunately, he said the shaft had wear and would last maybe another couple of years. While he was taking it apart, I researched it, and I know exactly what he was talking about and that it was true. Last season I head the cooler making a noise, and I called another company to check it out. They said there was no problem. If they had fixed it, the shaft wouldn't have worn as much. I appreciated the way Luis's employee showed me the part and explained everything. I would trust him to check it out and do work again. With that repair and a new float, I paid $137 more. That seems fair for the work and time it took.
It has been a few days, and I may have to ask them to check on my system. It's working, but it is just not cooling like I know it has before. I've checked, and there's water that drains from the overflow pipe (so I think the pad is getting water), and the fan is blowing. At night when it's cool, the house cools down, but during the day it's only about 2 degrees cooler than outside. It's natural for it to warm during the day, but I know last summer it didn't warm to almost 90 inside. I don't know what it might be, but I would call Startech to check on it."

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."
