"Ivan came out to replace our garage trim due to squirrel damage and did a fantastic job. He was timely, responsive, and easy to communicate with where I had questions. Very easy to work with Ivan. Squirrel crisis averted and garage looks very good - high quality job by Ivan. I also had Ivan look at an ice damn issue we have been having on a section of our home. Ivan assessed the insulation, showed me the issue with lack of insulation (there was only 3 inches) and the building standards, gave me a fair price on insulating, and a week later he has insulated this section of our home. I am confident this will take care of our ice damn issue. I also could not believe this was not caught when we bought our home and again had insulation checked by a company last year after paying $3000 in ice dam removal. We are very thankful for Ivan?s expertise. Ivan stands behind his work and will help if we have additional concerns. I will 110% leverage Ivan in the future at our home."

"Excellent company to work with. Installed siding, trim, service door and window on my 30+ year old garage. Kept me informed and answered any questions as the work was being done. As a plus, the clean up was spotless at the end of the job!"

"I highly recommend A to Z Remodelers and will hire them again for my next job. Roman Chabin at A to Z remodelers did a wonderful job! Roman did everything that he said he could do. The crew was efficient and showed up on a timely basis and when they said they would. I was especially happy that Roman was able to deal with MetLife, my problematic insurance company, which was very difficult at best. A car had driven into my rental property and caused extensive damage to multiple rooms. Being a former contractor, city building inspector, Minnesota State Building Official number 1540, and currently owning a home inspection company, I have had experience with numerous contractors and insurance companies."

"In 2021 I had storm damage that resulted in my needing a new roof, siding, and garage doors. I also decided to replace four mid-priced windows in the front of the house and get a new service door for the garage. Craftsmen had put my roof on eleven years before so I had some experience with them. I also looked at reviews on several sites on line. Their representative, Eric, came to the house and explained all expenses, products, and procedures for completing such a large project. Product supply line issues resulted in some delays, but once work began, everything went efficiently. Craftsmen has dedicated and skilled work crews who show up when they saw they are going to. They have administrative staff that communicates frequently and responds to questions quickly. Because it was reimbursed by insurance, I didn't get involved in price comparisons because I was told by several people that what insurance agrees to pay is essentially what the cost is going to be. Craftsmen communicated with my insurance company and it went extremely efficiently. I am completely satisficed with the finished work and would highly recommend Craftsmen as a company."

"Went perfect, Evert is very unique inspiring elder man. I would not underestimate him cause he was able to lift a old rotting sinking 1957 garage and replace the wood. After that, the concrete was replaced, Tony is a concrete expert and him his son and crew did a absolutely beautiful job on the driveway and garage floor. However, I would suggest a electrician to check lighting etc... wiring to make sure there is some stretch room in the electrical before lifting a very old sunken building to avoid wiring breakage."

"The deck job is finished in good term. MV Builders LLC is not a large company. The owner does the construction work himself. Hence, this company has no overhead and the cost for my deck project is low. He provides good sketch drawing to the city to get the permit. He and his workers install five diamond piers for footing. He also spent extra time to broke off the old concrete footing, so the lot looks better. The quality and workmanship of this deck is good. He and his workers go extra miles to nail the deck board with a 45 degree nail gun, so that the nail heads is not visible. He spent two extra days to get the job done, because of the heavy rain. I recommended his work to my properties investment club of 500 plus members. I heard good comments from two members already."

"We were originally told that the work would be completed in 3 consecutive days within 2 weeks, and that we would have 48-hrs notice before work began. We were notified about 6pm on Sun night that work would begin at 7am the next morning ... not a deal-breaker but didn't leave us much notice.
Work began on Mon, 7/23/12. The roofing crew started on time, finished on time, worked hard and consistently, were very friendly & courteous, answered questions, addressed concerns, did a very good job & cleaned up everything. They were great!
We were then notified that the siding crew wouldn't be able to start until Fri, 7/27/12 (not a major problem but not what was promised for consecutive days of work). The crew showed up on time and, again, were very courteous and hard working. They stripped the old siding off in the morning then dropped everything at 12:30pm and said they would be back on Monday, 3 days later. The house was stripped, a dumpster was placed blocking the entire driveway and debris was strewn everywhere (drain spouts were thrown in the yard, old siding strewn around, front yard flowers were smashed, the cable box was open and hanging off the wall exposed to weather, and the front porch was covered with nails and old siding material). A call to the Field Supervisor, Keith Werness, got things more-or-less back on track and the crew returned later in the pm and finished the siding on Sat. There were numerous problems on post-inspection but they were promptly taken care of.
The gutter crew returned on Mon, 7/30 and were flawless. The dumpster was removed in the morning & we could again get access to our garage (I checked the dumpster and NONE of our material was in it since the roofing was removed separately and the siding was recyclable aluminum ... 3 days of a dumpster for no reason!).
We were not warned up front that our driveway would be blocked with a dumpster for 3 days (they even asked what side of the driveway to drop the siding so we could get at least 1 car in/out of the garage ... didn't matter in the end), nor that the hammering on the siding would knock items off the interior walls. They replaced the clock that was smashed but we're still finding plugs out of the wall, etc.
Overall, I felt that Keith was a true advocate on our behalf & got things fixed but that the Company was a typical "contractor" that did things on a whim, without regard for our concerns, nor delivering on what was promised. It felt like a fight and that I had to scrutinize everything because I had no faith that work was going to be completed as promised. In the end, I think we got what was promised, but I sure had to spend too much aggravation ensuring that it happened."

"We were in serious need to fix our leaking flat roof on our attached garage, as well as replacement of the rails and exterior staircase which were in disrepair and unsafe. Mark and Cristian gave us a quote and were able to get the crew to work, my concern was before the snow and they made it happen! Once spring came the new garage door got installed and new gutter and downspout on the back which looks great. The new cedar stairs and rails are now safe and we can't wait to use our new deck this summer! We would recommend working with Northrup!"

FAQs for garage building service projects in Savage, MN

A well‑constructed, properly permitted detached garage adds between $12,000 and $36,000 to a home’s resale value. Buyers appreciate the secure parking, extra storage, and flexible workspace, so appraisers often bump the property’s value accordingly. The exact return depends on the garage’s size, finishes, and how well it matches the main house, but most homeowners see a strong ROI when the build meets local codes and passes inspection.

Yes—once it meets local building codes and you secure the proper permits, a detached garage can be converted into living space. Finishing the interior, adding climate control, and ensuring safe egress effectively increase your usable square footage, though it may not always count toward the official listing. Skipping permits can trigger fines and even force you to undo the work, so always clear plans with your city first.

Most homeowners policies cover a detached garage under the “other structures” provision, but coverage limits vary. Review your declarations page and ask your agent how much protection you have for separate structures. If the limit is lower than the garage’s replacement cost, you can raise it for a modest premium. Confirming the details now prevents headaches if you ever need to file a claim.
